I literally know nothing about this bitch, but this got right under my skin this year.

The Knowles of the year. I haven't investigated the rest of the album so much, but this is slick and gorgeous.

    6. Bastille - Good Grief

I couldn't stand that overplayed Pompeii and I find them quite cringey to watch in performance, but like that Birdy one, this got into my ear and never left. I doubt I'll be listening to this in 2018.

Well obviously. "I'm doing my face with magic markers" is a great lyric. Would love to know if the original lyric, bore any resemblance to that sentiment.

Red Flag was my album of the year by some distance. A special nod goes to Ratchet Behaviour as my album track of choice. I look forward to their 2026 effort.

    2. Clean Bandit feat. Sean Paul & Anne-Marie - Rockabye

Last year KDA, Tinnie and Katy celebrated 2 Unlimited last year and somehow the Xmas #1 of 2016 is this cod reggae Ace of Base tribute (even with a direct reference to an actual baby). Objectively I may not have placed this as high, but I based the list on my most played. Sean Paul getting another hit, somehow fills me with glee.

    1. LeAnn Rimes - The Story

My good friend LeAnn Rimes takes my #1 of the year, with a cover of a 2007 song. But it was new to me. Long may she steal husbands.

    On balance...

Pop music is dead. Long live pop music. Many purists still come up with the tunes, you just have to look for them. I mainly rinsed 80s club music and Dannii Minogue.

    FIN.

nice list, though i really object to that rockabye song):

all saints, solange, the weeknd, shura, britney all making appearances in mine, though a couple of them with different songs.

i hadn't heard that birdy song, it sounds like it samples some 80s italo track which i quite like. this was also my first time hearing a bastille track i think.

and obviously: miss carly still slaying in 2016 *.*

I am delighted to receive the approval of Glenda the Sea Cucumber. If there was one sea urchin I was seeking approval from, it was Glenda.

I don't think I've properly listened to the B-sides release. She just gives so much, I need time to digest her previous works.

Rockabye's only been out for two months so you must have been hammering it like crazy!

Yeah, I've been playing a mix of it as well. It's FUN FOR 1994. I will inevitably tire of it quick smart.

This would not be too dissimilar to my top 10 also.

'The Story' 'One Strike' and 'Man on The Moon' are my top 3 :disco:

I far prefer listing the worst songs released year by year since there seems a lot of material to work with and they're easier to make.
I love reading other people's list as well. :disco:

    So the worst ones...

    10. Zara Larsson - Lush Life

Controversial one. She really isn't all that, nor is this song. I don't hate the song so much, but what it represents - the devaluing of pop music. This is one of the biggest pop hits of the year and I wouldn't feed it to my cat.

    9 Drake - One Dance

Again another, I don't mind - but four months at #1 for a song that amounts to terribly little. I'm not sure if streaming or reductive production values or a disinterested youth are to blame.

I don't understand how anyone who loves pop music could hate that Zara Larsson song. It's just so perfectly crafted. Hook after hook after hook.

Her subsequent stuff has been disappointing, however.

8 Major Lazer/ Justin Bieber - Cold Water

It could have been any of Bieber songs to be honest. The over polished, far too subtle, underwhelming anaemic stream of shit he's laid down in the last 18 months, really has been the manure for the rest of the crap that clogs up the musical mainstream. We all get high and have sex, but sometimes hun, it can actually be interesting!

    7. Fifth Harmony - Work From Home

Songs about WORK are inevitably SHIT - see Kelly Rowland, Saturdays and this (I like the Rihanna one). Also what a bunch of basics.

Wholy unnecessary. Fast Car has been ruined this decade, the way You Got The Love was in the 00s. Another uninteresting producer led crap - bring back Basshunter

There still isn't an official music video for 'One Dance', or 'Too Good' for that matter, lazy shit.

    Great album, though.

    4. Mike Posner - I Took A Pill in Ibiza

I don't know. I really don't. BACK IN MY HEAD a four week number one, was alive with energy or soul or anger. The title of this song, should offer up an absolute banger of a song, not this grot.

At least it's not the same song as the others on this list. But this plump, over sentimental crap is foul. First Danish #1 since Aqua, for shame.

    2. Maroon 5 - Don't Wanna Know

For all their terribleness, they once produced some high level catchy pop, with their own sound. But this is proper lowest denominator tut.

To be honest, any of them could have been here. The kings of anaemic soulless music that has been the sit down sound of 2016. Is it meant to be sexy? Cool? Fuck knows. It's shit.
