Based on the book by Neil Gaiman and with the involvement of Bryan Fuller (Hannibal, Pushing Daisies)

What an amazing cast, the guy plying Shadow is unknown (he was in The 100) but the rest includes Ian McShane, Gillian Anderson, Cloris Leachman, Pablo Schreiber (pornstach), Peter Stormare, Kirsitin Chenoweth, Orlando Jones, Dane Cook and Emily Browning.

All these shows with American in the title are confusing me.

The guy playing Shadow was in HOLLYOAKS :D

It's a great book, so I'll probably watch this if it pops up on Freeview or Netflix or whatever.

    FUCK GOD AND CUM HARD

Well this was fun, and DARK. Ricky Whittle brooded handsomely but Ian McShane was on tremendous Swearengen-esque form. Unsurprisingly gorgeous to look at, with Spartacus levels of blood sloshing about.

I was feeling a bit bereft most of the Sunday/Monday tv now having come to its conclusion so this sounds just up my street.

The first episode was kind of a lot, but I'm interested to see where it goes...

I'm enjoying this but I can't say it would make a lot of sense without having read the book. It's a lot of monologues and some are better than other.

The polish gods were the best part of the second episode.

I really enjoyed the first episode but the second didn't keep my attention as much.

I liked Gillian in the telly though.

just the first episode. never read anything by gaiman but i've always been predisposed to like him because of the tori connection. i wanted to see chenowith but i'm definitely not sticking around for more.

enjoyed the sword jumping out of the frame during the first fight sequence but that is the only thing that i liked.

Damn that was some hot gay sex. The vignettes are the best part of the show.

I wish they would explain a bit more about what's going on, even having read the book I'm struggling with one of the plot points.

The first episode of this was really ODD, but I'm glad I stuck with it because it's only been getting better. Deadwife is a total CUNT though, that remains unchanged. Gillian as Bowie was EVERYTHING and then some.

Overall it's got a very distinct and hyper stylised visual style which took a couple of episodes to adjust to, but it really helps for certain aspects and it being Starz it's nice to see they've employed the old Spartacus method of literal BUCKETS OF BLOOD every time there's a gory fight. Aside from Media stealing every scene she's in, it's a really good cast and even though I know nothing beyond what precious little the show has decided to dole our about the mythology and lore it's got me hooked.

I thought this ended up as a lot of style over substance. The source material isn't easy to adapt and the way they handled it made Shadow even more of blank and moron than he is in the book.

There are some strong sequences and scenes, the Easter bit in the finale was glorious, the Jinn and the cab driver, the Zoryas and Laura and Mad Sweeney road trip. The over reliance on CGI was not a good choice and doing a whoLe coming to America sequence in CGI was a very bad choice.

I think it can be improved in the second season but so far it's a B-

If you want some Chenowith then just download the last episode and watch the second half, it's some of her better TV work.

I enjoyed this overall, though the last episode didn't exactly feel like a season finale. Agree about Gillian pracically stealing the show with her Bowie turn, but I love cunty Laura Moon - her backstory episode and the road trip with Sweeney and Salim might have been my favourites.

Oh and tee hee at the line a few weeks ago about Ricky Whittle's masturbation face. :D

Just finished this. I agree it was pretty flawed - massive pacing issues, way too much exposition and whether it's the fault of the writing or Ricky Whittle's performance or both, Shadow Moon is just a complete and utter void of a leading character.

That said, there was - frustratingly - enough really good stuff to keep me on board. The vignettes with the different Gods were all beautifully shot and I love all the mythology it explores. Gillian Anderson was an absolute scene stealer as mentioned, and her face-off with Chenoweth in the final episode was well worth the wait. Laura took some time to grow on me but ended up the de facto lead in my eyes, and I hope we see more of lovely Salim in Season 2.

Did it get consistently strong ratings? It really felt like the kind of show people would tune out of quite quickly, despite the fact that it got better as it went along.

It's on Starz so ratings are pretty low, it averaged 600-700K per episode.

How on earth can they afford to continue paying for all those actors/all that CGI on those ratings?

I think they're partnered with Amazon, also their more successful shows started the same. Powers now does around 2 million and Outlander 1 million.

It's weird with Starz, I think they depend more on the movies they show than tv shows.

Starz have always had a somewhat UNUSUAL business model, but I won't complain if they keep churning out stuff like this. Overall it was a very solid first season, as I said above it did take me a few episodes to adjust to it, but (and perhaps because I watched it alongside Twin Peaks) it bedded in fairly quickly.

The big reveal/party/showdown in the final episode was just amazing. I hope we get to see a lot more of Kristen in season 2, she was just so much fun. Media remained the MVP throughout, of course, and I still maintain that dead wife is a massive fucking CUNT, but her double act with Pablo was one of the best pairings on the show.

I think this is probably the best looking TV show I've ever seen. I'm not familiar with the source material and it took me a while to work out what on earth was going on but that didn't really lessen my enjoyment; it's so strikingly different to anything else out there that it's hard to not get lost in it.

Bryan Fuller has left the show and now Gillian Anderson said she won't be coming back. Chenoweth also said she's not sure if she'll be back.

I don't think a seasons 2 is going to happen any time soon if ever.

Mess. First Fuller going then this. In terms of screen time they weren't the biggest roles in the first season but they both had scene stealing turns (Gillian especially). I'm not familiar with the books so don't know how the characters play out but they aren't easy recasts.

Are Anderson and Chenoweth quitting out of loyalty to Fuller? I know Chenoweth is a close friend of his but it seems a bit of a weird hill to die on all things considered...

Anderson seems out of loyalty, Chenoweth was uncertain if they’ll have her back. They’re both regular collaborators with him.
