I'm definitely enjoying it more the second time round.
Same! Haven't listened yet as I've been on Gabrielle (obvs) but will take a proper listen to this tomorrow.
Well I think it's wonderful.
Bearing in mind she did nothing for me before this album.
I tried again with REM and Borderline yesterday and then had to switch off because I was so fucking BORED. The latter sounded like a Hard Candy reject sonically. I'm hearing no "experimentation" here.
What a comedown.
I don't feel compelled to listen to this again. I was hoping for at least a fabulous carcrash when she got engaged on the first date but it all seems really samey, her baby voice seems worse than usual.
The run of Into You - Side to Side - Everyday is still probably the apex of the post-Disney skank pop generation, although I do still feel robbed that Selena Gomez never stuck to that weird, dead-eyed child bride sound of stuff like Bad Liar and Fetish. I hate lupus.
This will probably be Best New Music on Pitchfork and we will deal.
I like Goodnight and Go. Well, the bits that sample Imogen Heap's Goodnight and Go. Actually I just like Imogen Heap's song.
this was supposed to be Ariana's Blackout (or wasn't it? I cannot tell anymore) and instead we got one of those albums that Starbucks play all the time in the background where every 3-4 songs you go "oh I quite like that maybe I should Shazam it" but then, you're immediately distracted by something else (perhaps a Grindr notification or a Facebook poke - do people still do that?) and you go back to writing your newest blog entry on why banning straws is silly.
Sorry but Borderline is phenomenal.
For a supposed homage to one of her favourite songs ever it's fucking shit. She should've just covered it straight up instead of meddling.
I think this is quite good actually. It’s rather low key on the whole but really quite enjoyable.
The lack of any “Dangerous Woman” style pop bangers is a shame though.
And I'm now really loving this. Best POP album of the year so far for me.
The lack of a co-write credit for Imogen on "goodnight n go" is a bit rum though. I assume that will be fixed in due course.
Unless Ariana bunged her a million for staying schtumm
Midweek #1 with just under 26k sold.
I imagine she's a lock for #1 given that Mamma Mia us at #2 with 11k, and that only managed 30k in total last week.
Breathing is #1 on iTunes.
Pitchfork gave it a 8.1.
After years of searching, Ariana Grande has found her true voice. Sweetener is an exemplary pop album, radiating with low-key joy and newfound love.
Grande co-wrote more songs than usual (10 out of 15) and formed a clear bond with Pharrell, who serves as a songwriter and producer across Sweetener’s stronger half.
Who actually cares how much their pop faves write of their albums? It's all about the DELIVERY.
The fans who are used to their faves writing their whole albums care.
The album is quite pleasant in a “lying in the garden with some background music on” context.
It reminds me of an early Rihanna album - although that’s not really much of a compliment
It's pop music, who cares who writes what.
A full on big pop girl shrieky vocal is just fabulous though. Because you just know that they would be able to deliver it live too
I don't even mind the deafening screaming and high notes, the Liberation exposure therapy has definitely helped.
It's stuff like the mumbly verses on Pete Davidson Is My Fiance And Has A Big Dick that wear me out, and this is coming from someone who constantly talks like they have food in their mouth.
Let's face it, clear diction has never been Ariana's gig.
I feel like a terrible gay but I rather think Ariana's version of "Goodnight And Go" might be better than Imogen's
I really should have posted that hands up smiley there but Moopy doesn't seem to allow for that
Forget diction, I need a fucking CONSONANT
A couple of songs have grown on me.
I now use
God Is A Woman
still no interest in the rest
ok so I am living for Breathin' but sounds like a lazy rehash of her iconic ode to her undamaged unblemished vagina anthem Touch It
The amount of praise this is getting is just...I genuinely don't understand. Am I getting old? I mean even Max Martin team's tracks aside from the singles are a bit reductive let alone the Pharrell ones. HOW is this so highly rated??? People are saying this is her BEST album. Although I bet these are the same people who eat up anything Beyonce has SHAT out during the last five years.
I’d say it’s more consistent than ‘Dangerous Woman’, but lacks the highs.
Enya's albums have consistency, not that it's a bad thing but this is fucking Ariana Grande
I BLAME her awful brother FRANKIE for this
It's always like this. Her story post Manchester is that she's a brave icon and the singles were great so the reviewers were always gonna be all over it. It's not about the album itself. But it won't stand the test of time like Dangerous Woman.
The album isn't great. I've seen a lot of talk of it being a 'grower' which is often code for 'I really, really, really wanted to like this album'.
We'll all know which "rock and roll fag" is at fault when Ariana records her Joanne album
Let’s blame everything bad on Frankie. He can be like her picture of Dorian Gray
Yep, he's cancelled forever tbh
I'm upset the gospel intro to No Tears isn't in the album version. I'll give my thoughts on the album soon but I'm liking it.
Mm it wasn’t meant to be as shady as that, I’m not having a dig.
It’s a combination of SOPHIE being the most baffled I’ve ever been by a popular act on Moopy, and the long-standing bug up my arse about Moopy’s zero tolerance policy about Asian music.
The fact that it’s usually based on it being in a foreign language was the hardest to swallow considering how many European languages people consume for Eurovision and various French artists.
@COB is the key here I think, don’t you like Girls Generation?
Yes, but how often do they do so outside of Eurovision? People like to be able to relate to words where there are words and that is automatically harder if they aren't in a language in which you are fluent. The amount of choice available means there isn't an imperative to make the additional effort required. Anyway, I thought Babymetal and BTS had played big venues over here?
