Reese is so wonderful in this. Absolutely fantastic.
Nicole's look like she could kill when Shailene was looking at the picture of the rapist WHO LOOKED A BIT LIKE HER HUSBAND was a bit worrying.
Still loving this. Reese's scene by the swing when she lowered her voice should get her the Emmy.
Predictions for next week's finale:
Jane's rapist is
Nicole's husband who Shailene still hasn't had a scene with yet
The dead body is
Spoiler: DEAD BODY
Nicole's rapist wife beating emotionally abusive husband
The murderer is
Reese, avenging Shailene and Nicole
Amabella's bully is
Spoiler: AMABELLA'S BULLY
I couldn't work out where I knew Theatre Man's wife from but lo and behold she's only that irritating journalist from Homeland: Berlin.
I just caught up, Nicole is doing some great work and so is Reese who I was never a huge fan of.
It's so conflicting when the abusive husband is so hot (as in I find him attractive not as in I like what he does to poor Nicole).
Is the finale going to be a double episode? It feels there's still too much to cram into 50 minutes.
An amazing ending to an outstanding series. Totally satisfying and paced wonderfully.
Will post more about it when others have had a chance to indulge its brilliance.
I'm three episodes in, I wasn't too sure after episode 1 but episode 2 convinced me to keep going and now I'm hooked. I really love the character who has the daughter called Amabella, what a nightmare.
I'm not sure about Jane, she just doesn't fit into the setting at all so I struggle to see why the other characters would feel so protective of her.
I also don't how know I feel about Nicole Kidman having so much sex... she's always seemed like a robot to me. If it means Alexander Skarsgård showing some skin I'm all for it though.
Oh wow what an episode, that was an outstanding episode of television.
like Sharla I had assumed it was Maddy's daughter who was the bully so the fact that it was one of the twins was a bit of a surprise (also those children are all supposed to be the same age but their intellect varies greatly).
That scene at the end with all of them trying to fend off Skarsgard nearly made me cry. Everyone was great but Shaileen in her moment of realization was heartbreaking.
I felt a bit cheated but then that bit right at the end came and wow.
Incredible episode. The beach finale cut with the flashbacks nearly fucked me up. Surely the best TV drama in years.
Alexander Sarsgard as the rapist seemed pretty obvious early on but when he took the boys to school and that was the day Ziggy didn't want to go it became cast iron, but his son as the bully was surprising although it seems obvious now.
When it became clear that the denouement was going to happen at the trivia night my mind wandered to the opening sequence and a Murder On The Orient Express scenario where they all took turns with a knife. That brutality of the attack scene was filmed and edited beautifully. I need to watch it again from the start to take it all in.
For the inevitable awards season I'd guess Reese over Nicole for Actress, Shailene over Laura for Supporting and maybe Alexander Sarsgard as well.
And Zoe Kravitz looks so much like her mother and if that's her singing voice then please record an album soon xx
I think Nicole has it in the bag, she has to go head to head with Lang.
finally watched the last three episodes. this has been a great mini-series and it's handled a lot of women's issues even if some rather subtly.
i curse the day sharla spoiled everything but yeah, let's not go there.
it all came together really well and was very well done.
nicole's storyline has hit something of a chord with me, not that i've ever been physically abused but i have been staying with men that are bad for me thinking they might change/i might change them.
Soz again hun, but it was such an obvious observation at the time.
HOLY FUCKING CHRIST!
What a fucking show! Just an absolute triumph.
Literally DIED at every single scene with Queen Renata.
Shailene reminded me somewhat of THE FEMALE BOSS.
I rewatched the last ten minutes again last night. What an amazing sequence.
Has @VoR not watched this?
Not yet. I have so much TV on the go right now.
How many episodes? I might download it for downtime in Kyiv.
Perfect. Have they all aired now?
yas, vori, yas!!!
am i doing it right?
well, there go the last strands of me trying to like her in this.
Reese and Nicole got nominated both for Lead Actress in a Miniseries at the Emmys today, they're up against Lange and Sarandon for Feud as expected (and two others who won't win and are completely irrelevant). Everything crossed for Nicole
Shailene and Laura also nommed for supporting and the show itself is in for Best Miniseries.
And Alexander is nominated too.
Five Emmys won, including ones for Kidman, Dern and Skarsgard!
i totally forgot about the emmys): are they up to watch anywhere?
Poor Nicole Kidman can't go to an awards ceremony without people thinking she's strange. This time for kissing Alexander Skarsgard in front of her husband.
I mean, you would.
one of the (very few) highlights of the emmys:
So did you watch it?
I've just finished this, the last episode is EVERYTHING.
I could tell who the victim is, but the murderer (if you actually consider that just one person) could've been anyone really
The end is perfect and they should've just left it at that. Don't see why it's getting a second season.
So just binged this in two days as it’s now on NowTV. I was actually thinking it was well acted but just ok before the final episode, which was absolute dynamite. Interestingly, though, I’d guessed most stuff really early on- the rapist, the death and then I figured who would be the murderer very early on during the fundraiser, due to some of the looks.
Kidman was superb, definitely deserving of the Emmy, just ahead of Reese, who was great too, but obviously didn’t have the range of emotion required, but Laura Dern was the standout for me, as many others have said. Phenomenal, bit camp, marvellous.
Be interesting to see where series 2 can go, though. Like Desperate Housewives, a second “mystery” may seem rather forced...
I wish they wouldn’t do a season 2 but they’re going ahead.
@Phoenix - I finally spent an Amazon gift voucher on purchasing this on DVD, so I'll get back to you.
Meryl Streep has joined season 2
She'll be playing Alexander Sarsgard's mother.
That is unreal. I'm fucking THRILLED despite The Hours, Meryl and Queen Nic have never actually shared the screen, right?
she hasn't done that much tv work, has she? wonderful news. I wonder if she's delightfully wicked and drags them all through hell or just a meek old lady
Only seen her in Angels in America, I think.
Finally getting around to the first season of this. Four episodes in and I can't quite believe how much acclaim it received. It's LUDICROUS Although admittedly in a very watchable way.
The way the children are written is absolutely absurd. I laughed so hard when the little six year old boy screamed "TELL ME WHO MY FATHER IS FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!!!"
Not to mention the little girl (also about six) who's all about PJ Harvey album tracks and Elvis Presley deep cuts. I mean WTF?
I do like how Laura Dern is the only one who seems to be aware how silly it all is and chews the scenery accordingly.
