It really isn't. It got a very mixed reaction and alineated a lot of her fans, myself included. It might fit her persona but in terms of music it's MILES away from all her previous efforts. Let's face it "Gaga by numbers" would have easily topped the UK charts.

Really? For me it just sounds like a combination of everything else she's done, just not as good.
Gaga by numbers doesn't always make a good song. See her album tracks for that.

BTW sounds like ANYONE could have done it. Paparazzi, Bad Romance, Alejando etc. are all very "Gaga". That's one thing that was so disappointing about it for me. I had a couple of :disco: moments to BTW, but they've all faded for me now, where my :disco: moments to Bad Romance et al are still going strong.

BTW remains a very good pop song, but not a very good "Gaga" song.

"Born This Way" is the midweek US Pop #1, it's very tight near the top and the new chart week just began so it will have to hold on until Sunday to take the official Pop #1 title

It would be her 7th #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart, the only single that didn't make it to the top was "Alejandro" which stalled at #4

Indeed, I am starting to see why they decided to go with a 2nd single before the album release, instead of a standard 6-8 week 1st single to album gap. I just don't have the urge to play this on my own anymore, I can enjoy it on radio but it's more just THERE than anything else

    And that's a 6th week @ #1 in a row on the U.S and Canadian Hot 100 :disco:

Her 7th #1 on the BB Pop charts as well, only Alejandro didn't make it to the top.

Lady Gaga’s smash single “Born This Way” this week tops the two-million sales mark in the United States, becoming Gaga’s eighth consecutive 2-million-seller. To date, the track has sold 1,978,000 digital copies and 37,000 CD singles. The song is #4 on its 7th week on the U.S Hot 100.

Why is BTW's Youtube views so high (29m+) but yet so ridiculously LOW? Rebecca Black and Jennifer Lopez both nearly DOUBLE, both released at the same time and with significantly lower profiles. Are people viewing it via another SOURCE? What's the problem?

Well, I think the problem is HERE:

For the first time, some TIT decided to release the audio file on VEVO a few days before the video release... :manson:
Now, it's common knowledge most people (I'm not talking pop-addicted QUEENS with an internet connection) just look for a song on Youtube and click on the first link coming.
The image is on nearly 54m views already and steals more views every day to the video.

Oh well, at least they won't repeat the same mistake for JUDAS.

On a side note, France finally succumbs and gives BTW its 17th #1 spot, following Slovakia last week. :disco:
It's shaping up to be her fourth biggest international hit after Poker Face, Bad Romance and Just Dance.

Almost all songs are put on either as audio or in 'lyric video' form before the actual video, Gaga is not so unusual

Christ, this might not have been the unmitigated success here as it was in the US, but you really cannot call this a flop. Six consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 is a massive achievement.

I think that in the UK the reason people feel it has 'underperformed' is because we were all EXPECTING it be at number one for several weeks and a huge hit but it's not a flop in any sense of the word, it's still sold really well and has showed stability.

It's done 345,500 in the UK and 2,147,000 (40k of which is physical) in the US, so probably around 3-3.5 million WW.

The US success is mindblowing. The album will open to extraordinary figures (in 2011 terms, anyway)

I think the album has the potential to open with 1 million in the US. But unlike Taylor she will more than likely get follow-up massive hits off the album which Speak Now hasn't really pulled off, so it will be interesting to see how far it goes in the end.

If Judas is a better song than BTW, I don't see how it CAN'T open with a million. The opening week in the UK will be more interesting.

I think it will still open with big numbers in the UK DESPITE "Born This Way".

Unless of course "Judas" is a big piece of shit. :(

Come back when The Fame is certificated Diamond in the U.S.
Or when Gaga scores 6 #1 albums. Or perhaps one.

OOPS you're right it was just #1 on physical!

She just climbed to #1 on the Japanese Hot 100 though.
Gaga now officially BIGGER THAN FALOOLA CHONG in Asia! :disco:

For a song which seems to have received a lukewarm reception at BEST (and a vitriolic one at worst) from most quarters that is VERY impressive

Yes, she'll definitely pass the 500K mark in the end, leaving "Alejandro" way behind.
    It's more of a "Telephone" sized-hit.

I don't know how much it sold but Alejandro felt a bit like a non-event in the end

I guess it didn't help that the video was pretentia-gaga at her very WORST
