    HELLO FILM LOVERS

I never go to the CINEMA because FRANKLY I can't be ARSED but I've a YEN to see a VAGUELY ARTY DRAMA involving HOMOSEXUALS

Should I PLUMP for "a wonderfully performed and impressively unsentimental story of love and longing in the Yorkshire Pennines"

or "It's the summer of 1983, and precocious 17-year-old Elio Perlman is spending the days with his family at their 17th-century villa in Lombardy, Italy. He soon meets Oliver, a handsome doctoral student who's working as an intern for Elio's father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of their surroundings, Elio and Oliver discover the heady beauty of awakening desire over the course of a summer that will alter their lives forever."

I imagine the latter would be MUCH TO YOUR TASTES.

Unless you've fucked in a field being watched by THE COWS.

Be careful; the second one contains sexual content, nudity and some language.

Call Me By Your Name is apparently SEVERAL SHADES OF WONDERFUL and I can't wait. How refreshing it will be to see a gay film which isn't shot in that EDGY CLOSE-UP FASHION and isn't GRITTY, MOROSE and set in a COUNCIL FLAT IN NORTH LONDON.

seeing it this Saturday (at a LGBT film festival showing, I expect it to be a circle jerk). I can suffer the middle class if it's only a few hours till the credits and I'm left to my destitute existence again

    it is absolutely wonderful.
doesn't really start as anything that special but by the time it reaches its emotional peak, it is heartbreaking and comforting and just beautiful.

has anyone else seen it yet? i want to discuss stuff as i haven't really gotten my head around some of it.

Maybe my expectations were too high.

did anyone else get the feeling that they were treating homosexuality as some kind of phase that happens in your youth? from armie moving on to a "heteronormative life" to his dad telling him something like that almost happened to him when he was young... it was the only thing that i thought the movie was a bit ambivalent about.

also i'm starting to get annoyed with movies that show people who make a great connection and give up on it (see also: la la land). i get that they were both quite young and times were different but still, make a bit of an effort ffs. or are we supposed to think of passionate, romantic love as just another vestige of youth?

Beautiful as he is, Arnie Hammer looked a bit old to play the character he did.

He was meant to be 24.

Of the gay films I've seen in the cinema this year I'd rate them like this.

    1. God's own country
    2. Handsome devil
    3. Call me by your name

This was the first mainstream film about a gay relationship I've seen where I actually felt there was a believable chemistry between the characters. I really didn't get it at all with God's Own Country, and Brokeback Mountain is another story altogether.

Admittedly I may not have seen that many, but this one did it right, although I agree with @ameraal 's point about the end. I think it was supposed to contrast the attitudes of their parents, particularly for the time. The speech at the end given by Michael Stuhlbarg was quite lovely.

The soundtrack and score really lifted the film for me. It was just beautiful and made up for the fact that it was at least half an hour too long.

I definitely didn't get the sense that papa was trying to get Elio to see it as a phase, in my understanding he urged him to stay true to that feeling unlike himself who'd hid it for all those years... HEARTBREAKING

    EXACTLY

I think it was quite clear that Elio was being encouraged to not only accept his sexuality and to never stop being open to love. And Dad was clear that he would never judge him or condemn him or cure him.
