HELLO FAN(Z). You may or not be aware that I had a bit of an ESC loon epiphany shortly before 2009's contest. It had always been there in varying degrees, but this was the first year I had properly got familiar with all the songs well in advance of the event.

After the dust had settled I was eager for more and retreated back to 2008's contest which I was semi-aware of. I watched the final last year and got sucked into the Perelli fever that Moopy had whipped itself into, but not much else.

So in August I loaded up my iPod with all the songs in now-tradition "Diddy Does..." style and listened and listened until I could LISTEN NO MORE. Then I got the DVD and watched it all a few times. PHEW.

Well I'm glad to report that while I found it hard to compare to the amazingness of the 2009 contest, I was pleased to find that it was a very solid year with at least 20 songs I would be happy to keep on my iPod after this whole thing was over.

I know I did a thread on the 08 contest about 3 or 4 months ago but that was a sort of interim report. I'm going to do a proper countdown of my the songs, as well as the same for the 2009 contest afterwards so I can finally draw a line under these two contests.

ARE YOU WITH ME? :al: :swede: :brit: :norway: :jew: :irish: :german: :denmark:

I hope she doesn't even make the top 20.

OT: Shame this isn't a top 19 instead

What makes you think I rated it low? Presumably you will be outraged if it is lower than #1?

OK I've been fiddling so much getting this right that I hardly have any time to actually DO it before I go out, so I'll do a few now and see how we GO.

I'll be disgusted if it beats either Qele Qele or Shady Lady.

Oh SHAME ON YOU, L'ESTONIE. I have a special place in my heart for this out of the Baltic state, with fond memories of 1996 entry Kaelakee hääl. However THIS is a load of bollocks.

I do admit not ALL novelty songs are terrible (as you will see later) but this just so lazy. Happily it didn't break their losing streak of the previous 4 years, and maybe this even prompted them to send something GOOD the next year.

Hmm well I hate doing these miserable bits of the countdowns where I am going on about how much I hate things, but we must PUSH THROUGH. This is a bit of cack that sounds oddly like an old Sean Maguire single, albeit with (even more) utterly banal lyrics. Des'ree would be watching this (she wouldn't have other plans) rolling her eyes at this parade of songwriting cliches.

The guy is sort of fit but WTF with the Oliver Twist get-up? NUL POINT in the style stakes I'm afraid.

Oh lord, when I was listening to this, I imagined some ropey looking Eastern European diva (hello Bulgaria 09) starting it off, so it was with some dismay that I saw what it really was. I do actually remember this at the time, it would take a lot of Brillo pads to the eyes to forget it.

I'm getting a migraine, how the hell did this finish top 10 in the final!?

A little calmer now, into those songs for which 3 minutes is about 2 minutes too much. I'm sure many rugs were cut to this in Zagreb but it doesn't really translate for me. I know the UK sends some shit out but why do other European countries send these bizarre pensioners?

Oh LORDI. Finland attempts to force lightning to strike twice and fails dismally. Less gimmicky to its credit, but completely not my cup of tea. The guys are a bit hotter (i.e. not orcs) but that does little to curry my favour.

Nowhere near as good as song called Femme Fatale should be. Not exactly thinking outside the Cypriot box here, with an intro so cliche-sounding they might as well have started smashing plates.

It does kick off after a minute but never seems to go anywhere. I don't hate it but it's just a bit of a waste of time. BLAH

YIKES ... Ireland play the sour grapes card after a series of disappointing results. In some ways it is a BIT funny and not meant as a proper anti-ESC song. But on the other hand, it is largely fucking terrible.

The song itself, apart from being a bit of a hi-NRG disco ordeal isn't musically awful, but that TURKEY ... ugh. After 2009's flop I hope they don't take a similar tactic next year.

UK gave Cyprus 12 points in the semi didn't we? Disgraceful.

2008 was so much better than 2009 Diddy, get over it.

OK last one that I'll do now, will do some more later tonight.

I don't hate this one either, the guy is pretty (thick), the song isn't terrible (it has a good bridge and everything), but it just feels so DATED. Not that I'm expecting Montenegrin music to be cutting edge or anything, but it reminds me of some early 90s Gillette commercial or something.

A bit like a Balkan version of the Bodyform song, but quite a lot less amazing.

Nine songs in, and no "O juliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissi na jalini" yet? You must be the only non-Belgian Moopy patron to think so! (certainly after seeing the actual performance in Belgrade)

    I also like 'O Julissi'.

It's the lack of 'Even If' and 'Nomads In The Night' so far that bothers me. I'm betting we'll see 'Wolves Of The Sea' in the top 5.

Even If doesn't sound too bad to me on the iPod. It's clearly not eurovision winner material, but at least it's catchy.

I wonder how Michelle Gayle would have done.

Or Diddy does (generic dance act) Diddy? You'd need only bother with a Top 2 for that one.

But imagine the heartbreak in determining whether to put "Give Me Love" (UK #52 in 1994) or "Give Me Love (Remix)" (#23 in 1997) at #1. :(

Continuing now the rather desolate mid-table fluff from the smaller countries. Again nothing really BAD I can say about this, but it's a rather unengaging duet ballad with a rather clunky handover to the female vocal after the first chorus.

Pleasant enough while I'm listening, but makes ZERO impact on me.

Bit of drama, from a lady who looks like Portugal 09's scary goth older sister. Finally we are into songs that are memorable in GOOD ways. Admittedly it doesn't kick in much until the chorus but she's got some STRONG VOX on her side and finishes with a bang.

I really love the intro to this for some reason, very spooky and simple. As close as we will probably get to an Italian entry for a while too...

I can see how the whole thing might be a bit of a drag but something has got my attention but I can't QUITE put my finger on it. I'm always pleased to see something decent from one of the teeny countries so this is more than welcome.

I don't recall any VINTAGE Eurovision songs coming from the old FYR but this isn't too bad. Sadly falling foul of the judge's wildcard that saw Charlotte Perelli swept into the final despite lesser public support.

It's not a GREAT LOSS it must be said, and it certainly benefits if you don't see them. But it's as accomplished an ethno-pop song as any other country could come up with. Just missing a bit of a hook but otherwise alright.

God if ever there was a performance to put me off a reasonable song, here it is. Before I saw it, I had this down as a rather cool chilled-out Mediterranean track, but what the fuck was that teddy bear about? She sadly turned out to be a bit of a spaz, and that's the sort of think you can't forget easily.

OK the first of the auto-qualifiers is from the host country. I think it would be fair to say that I don't dislike any of the songs from Moldova upwards, as much as the placing might suggest. I'll say now that I didn't really like Molitva that much, especially in comparison to this.

It's not really my thing but it feels very authentic and that's an important feature when there are so many songs from so many different cultures. Not that I know (or particularly need to know) what traditional Serbian songs sounded like, but I'm glad to have the chance.

Her vocals are great, and I do rather like that folky chorus. Perhaps finished a bit higher in the grand final than I would have thought appropriate but whatever.

OK one more tonight. Another song that I don't dislike, but doesn't really do that much for me. I like the intro, and the chorus is sort of memorably tune-wise. The performance was a bit of a shocker though, felt really off-key during the choruses.

Shame, but I don't think it would have been much higher in any case.
