In other news, due to being thrown OFF MY GAME, I've decided I won't be listening to any of the entries until they've all been selected. I am, however, deeply moist at the prospect of a Byelorussian song called Cheesecake :disco: (subject to change due to final judgement of Comrade Lukashenko, obv)

You're in for a long wait then, it will be somewhere around 18th March before all songs will have been selected.

And Cheesecake is a pile of SHIT.

The already insanely drawn out Lithuanian selection has been extended for 2 weeks.

Do they have NOTHING else to broadcast? :D

I like Albania but I'd be amazed if it qualified.

The intro doesn't work at all. It's too jarring.

Albania has NO CHANCE of qualifying, neither has Belarus.

Ukraine apparently is being completely revamped so I imagine it will sound much better, the song is a bit basic at the moment but all the right ingredients are there.

Albania will inevitably be getting a revamp too. I can't think of any years where they haven't.

Juliana Pasha wasn't too different but yeah, most of them have been revamped. But I don't think it will help Albania. It's too weird and not in a good way like Suus was.

Juliana Pasha sounded cheap as FUCK at Festivali! :D It didn't change significantly but even clearing up the production can make all the difference in some cases. And I think if they sort out the structure Herciana might be in with a shot.

A rock band who submitted an entry to the BBC has received a response:

    From: XXXXXX@bbc.co.uk

    To: Matthew Fielder
    Subject: ESC Song Submission Update

    Hello UKR,

A while ago you very kindly sent us a song for consideration as the UK entry to the Eurovision Contest. In the interests of fairness, we retained all such entries in order to listen to them all at the same time and compare them in the same conditions and circumstances. This morning we listened to all the tracks, and considered all the important factors: instant appeal, memorable hooks, live vocal impact, how the song builds etc. I’m sorry to say that although the song potentially means a lot to a British audience, the votes in Eurovision are only cast by European viewers and jurors and we felt that some of the references might be lost on that audience. Therefore, I’m really sorry to say that we did not shortlist your song. Nevertheless, we are extremely grateful to you for your interest in the UK entry and of course hope that you find success with the track elsewhere.

    Kindest regards,
    XXXXXXX

    On behalf of XXXXX

So it seems the BBC have a short list of entries. I don't know whether this means they've contacted various people to submit entries for the short list, or whether they're literally just going through whatever has been sent to them of its own accord...

Another distinctly average song from Italy taking itself too seriously then.

Tijana from Macedonia has now said she'll sing a song called "Unbreakable" in English rather than the Macedonian "Pobeda" as originally stated. This is presumably as there are so few ex-Yugoslav countries taking part this year (Slovenia is the only one in their semi) so they'll have to target other countries more.

Even though I'm not listening to them yet, could someone let me know in advance if there are any gypsy anthems this year as I'm going to need time to prepare myself. Even just looking at the Macedonian name and song title is getting me WET.

Another respectable result for Italy then, but no winner. I'd like to see them take it home, but that's not the song to do it.

After exploring Emma's back catalogue a bit, I'm slightly disappointed with her entry.

I think, like the UK, they're just choosing entries for the ratings rather than for a realistic chance of winning at the moment.

Unlike the UK, they're drawing from a talent pool that isn't preparing to draw a state pension...

I suppose they kind of have the advantage of having a contest on each year that conveniently allows them to cherrypick a contestant. But given how little of a following there is in Italy for Eurovision I doubt they're doing it much for ratings.

Surely the fact that it's been a ratings disaster to date is exactly WHY they're chasing ratings.

The big rumour last year was that if Marco didn't give them a significant viewership boost, they'd drop out again...

I don't think La mia citta is going to do well at all, think it will be the first Italian entry since their break to miss the top 10.

Also 1991 was over two decades ago. I think they can be given the benefit of the doubt RE hosting again. They're more well placed to host a good show than some poverty-stricken Balkan country...

I don't really get the hate for Italy. They're ten times the Eurovision nation we are these days. At least they make an effort.

Then again I was in the minority in that I really liked that jazz thing from 2011.

I genuinely prefer Believe In Me, I Can and Love Will Set You Free, ropey as they are, to Italy's efforts.
