France are hosting a national selection again for 2019. They've managed to pull in a few decent names as well.

Snippets on December 20th, but several of the songs have already been commercially released. (Links embedded)

The biggest names on the lineup appear to be

    Chimène Badi
French-Algerian singer who's sold over 2.5 million albums in France. Her song Entre Nous was a #1 hit in 2003.

    Emmanuel Moire
Singer-songwriter who's had four bestselling albums and a lot of hits. Also won Dancing With The Stars in 2012.

    Battista Acquaviva
Corsican folk/world musician who came to attention for her multi-octave vocal range and appeared on The Voice

I'd have put Emmanuel as the favourite but his song is not good enough and would be a flop. Battista I think sounds very intriguing as an artist, but her style might be a bit too MUCH. Will be interesting to hear the songs.

    Chimène's song:

Quite decent, not sure it's a winner though.

Battista's song - there's something about the vocal production I don't really like, but it's quite dramatic and I'm confident it could work better live based on her 'The Voice' audition.

Can we get a good ol' protest anthem from France again?

Bilal is emerging as a major frontrunner, already charting in France and Belgium.

Yeah I wish the song was a bit stronger because a genderfluid youtube queen lifting the crown is totally the logical next step after a bearded drag queen and a chicken-clucking #MeToo anthem. :disco:

Only taken the time to listen to Bilal so far but I’m totally on board, it’s the first song I’ve heard to get me excited about Eurovision this year. It took a couple of plays, but I had it on repeat this afternoon. Love the message and think it’s a fabulous artist + song package!

Roi's really nice but I can't help but feel like it'd be a slightly underwhelming contest winner.

That said, I'd 100% be here for France winning. Much as I could bitch all I like with them finally getting the crown with something that doesn't feel quite good enough, they have basically spent the last decade getting straight-up robbed with entries far better than the results they all invariably got. And who could complain at the prospect of Eurovision in Paris? :disco:

:DLaura's dress from 2017, half naked men, Enya's presence...it was ALL there except for poor Battista herself.:(

@Zu-Klara absolutely NEEDS to witness this.

Bilal was rather disappointing after all the hype. There's no denying he has the stage presence but his voice is quite weak and so is the chorus of his song. It's a likely winner and a likely bottom 5 in Tel Aviv.

Wtf is that Battista one :D

That Christ pose at the start that she sort of drops out of, is she drunk? :D the vocals are a bit Eimair Quinn, but seemed a bit like she didn’t know the words.

Topless men just WRITHING for 3 minutes, who is the choreography for this? :D

    I can’t believe this is a French 2019 candidate, it’s more like Belarus 2009

Forget Eimair Quinn, those vocals are DILBA levels of pained whispering

Bilal was just ok. I like the song a bit more now, but it's not a contender. Anyway him qualifying is a nice punch in the face of la Vieille France.

:D:D:D Naturally this performance is currently my favourite thing EVER. What a fucking state. Did her benzos kick in as soon as the song started? The syphilitic staring! The THIN MEWLING! :disco:!

Actually it reminded me of this without the lovely Italian fashions in terms of vocal effort and general va va voom except even MORE half-arsed which surely takes quite some doing and deserves a special Grand Prix Tiara :disco:

@Penelope get in here RIGHT NOW if you've not already seen this year's STAND OUT HIGHLIGHT

It'll be tough for a relative unknown to beat Bilal at this stage, but this rather pretty ballad from tomorrow's semi final is getting a fair bit of online hype.

It's so the kind of thing that could tank at Eurovision though. It'd have to be a real tearjerker onstage not to get a low televote.

Obviously one tries to like things if they’re French, and Mademoiselle does have a bit of a Dido tone to her VOIX, but JESUS CHRIST those chord progressions are so kidney-shreddingly predictable that I’ll have 2kg of Brie instead please

Having now bothered to listen to the four songs chosen in semi 1, I must say that they’re generally quite dreary. Je dis NON

I think I might like ‘Le petit Nicolas’ the most :side-eye:

Also, the vocals on the Battista studio version aren’t THAT much better than as presented during the sumptuous live fiasco, which rather suggests that the song didn’t particularly suit her to begin with. Someone on YouTube who was a bit upset about her not getting through suggested that, “Elle a un univers très particulier” which I thought was a rather fabulous way of putting it

Still better than all the others though :disco:

Seemone won Semi Two with a perfect jury score, although she was narrowly second on the televote.

Emmanuel Moire won the televote and finished second overall

It's clearly Seemone v Bilal in the final. Emmanuel might have won the televote but he is by FAR the biggest name in the line up - we're talking number 1 albums level of fame. Seemone made her first ever TV performance last night. HE has 412k followers on Twitter, before the show she had 400.

I think she will gain a lot of momentum. I thought it was quite a special moment last night. It will be interesting to see if she can topple the hype train of Bilal.

There was also a stage invasion by anti-Israel protesters while poor Netta looked on.

Wouldn't be surprised if this happens at other NFs this year too...
