Is Celine REALLY only #100 ? I thought that single had done FAR more than that. We know the album did but all the same...

I can't believe Shakira oversold Celine Dion's PQTMAE!!!!!!!!!

There are loads of latin songs. Just for the info, the French has "le tube de l'été" (the hit of the summer) the equivalent of the UK Xmas n°1. Most of the competing sings are Latin, Rai & stuff like that. That's why we were the first to discover Ricky Martin :D

One of the reasons I begrudge going to France is the awful music the have on the radio.

Hasn't it always been well known that the French LOVE a novelty song?

I remember the two times I was in a SUPERMARCHÉ that sold music and the top ten was almost ENTIRELY children-friendly music. It was like Mr Blobby and Aqua collided and exploded all over the music aisle.

For some bizarre reason, according to Indie this is the most linked to thread to moopy, or something like that. I can't believe it's almost 10 years since I started this thread and posted the French chart. I can actually remember starting this thread. Yikes, where has all the time gone?

Has this list changed much? I assume not.

I totally get what Funky says about children's music. It's almost like pop is an art form beneath the French.

My insight into France is that they do not know how to do TRASH. Brits have elevated it to an art form, whereas when the French do it, it just turns out SHIT.

    The last four million-selling singles in France are not included - DJ Bobo's "Chihuahua" (2003), O-Zone's "Dragonstea Din Tel" (2004), Ilona Mitrecey's "Un monde parfait" (2005 - 1.5m) and Crazy Frog's "Axel F." (2005 - 1.3m).

That said beyond the fact that it includes various Diamond-certified singles, this list (and an accompanying album's tally by the same source) originates from the amateur site InfoDisc and is in no way official. . . SNEP has not and never will compile a best-sellers list as hard sales information simply doesn't exist prior to the 80's, and only in a roundabout way for years after that. Up until 2005 SNEP largely treated providing specific sales data for artists/albums as being in the purview of record companies.

After thirty some years of a variety of hitparade publications, the official French music charts began only in 1984 with selected sales points that were extrapolated to depict the market at large until the advent of the accurate IFOP panel in the mid-90s (later supplanted by GfK in 2009). Moreover, weekly and annual sales totals weren't made available to the public until 2005. This is all complicated by the fact that SNEP has never certified albums or singles for shipments of more than one million units, did not begin doing so until the mid-80’s, and no longer publicly provides a record of certifications prior to 1994.
