It's been an amazing year for Las Vegas - first hearing Britney's incredible live vocals, and now Lady Gaga is hitting the town's most famous dive bar for a two-year residency.

"It's the land of Elvis, Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra, the Rat Pack, Elton John, Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli," she said in a statement.

    WOW, Britney shade.

1 million dollars per show in a sold out 5000 capacity venue would mean $200 per ticket - and that's just to cover Gaga's fee, so more likely $350-400 per ticket to make any actual money. Will people REALLY pay that in Vegas when a Gags concert tour is more in the $100-150 region?

I imagine that figure's been bullshitted. Like hell are people going to pay double what Britney Vegas tickets are going for.

Isn't Vegas something you do after your career has taken a dip? Does she have enough hits for people to care?

Don't you need to do something generation-defining before you land in Vegas? It feels like she's skipped 30% of her career and just gone straight to the finish.

Not in the '10s you don't.

You just need to be a has-been who wants to make some money before you're truly over. Which she is.

A good song for gays and kids?

I've always thought that to be generation-defining you need the trajectory for it. The success, the rise, the fall, the attitude, the talent, the STYLE. And she is definitely getting there, but ONE SONG alone is a bit of a stretch.

I guess with the fibromyalgia, this makes sense.

Hasn't the whole 'Vegas is for faded stars' thing gone the way of film stars doing TV now?

This does seem quite premature. I guess from the era in pop in which she emerged there aren't many left actually enjoying chart success though. Will she wheel out another album before this begins?

From my perspective, she will do good for herself and put a good amount of cash in the bank account. Who cares if Vegas is for has-beens? Not all has-beens are called to do shows in Vegas and get $1m per show (or correct me if I'm mistaken since I haven't done any sort of research on Vegas payments).

I think I read she will present new material during those performances.

She's had a career on fast forward anyway. It kind of all fits.

I’m sure each deal is different but Britney’s prevented her from performing any gigs in America outside of Vegas.

For Gaga that feels quite self-limiting for someone who seems to generate quite a following for her tours.

I don't really know what Gaga gets from this.

It's true that Vegas is no longer just for people who don't sell records anymore, but it DOES still signal that your career has reached a point where you don't strive to create or have any real artistic ambition. It's what you do when you're an artist who makes albums purely to take on tour. Which is not what Gaga is.

She doesn't need the money and she won't be able to do a proper album campaign so... why?

Like I said above, I think it's fibromyalgia related. The travelling aspect of touring will really take it out of her. But it seems clear that she still enjoys performing. Vegas allows her perform without the pain and stress of travel.

It might be time to accept that singer-performers today don't enjoy as long and as glory-filled a career as their predecessors did.

Residencies aren't always a bad thing / career killer type things or whatever, I mean look at Prince at the O2 ten years ago. In fact it rejuvenated his career.

But it is normally for people in the later days of their career and VEGAS out of all places for someone like her who keeps going on about being an ARTISTE just smacks of hypocrisy.

I mean she could have just done a residency at a New York venue as she keeps HARPING on about being from NEW YORK and all that.

I think that's as good as unquestionable. How does she do the kind of show she wants to do without the incredible stress of a touring production. Answer - do it in one place and let people come to her. Where in the (western) world has the facilities and the history to accommodate that? Vegas.
