I was reading Lebanon imports most of its food, including 90% of its wheat. All of which comes through the port. It’s completely devastating.

Jesus wept. looking at the photos of the aftermath it's hard to comprehend that this was the effect of just one explosion. The fact that this was an accident is nothing short of terrifying.

My heart sank and I literally dropped my phone when I saw that video, I just couldn’t imagine how everyone I know could be safe. Turns out everyone I know no longer has doors or windows, but you can’t imagine how much of a relief that is...

Apparently it was 1/5 of the size of the Himoshima bomb.

I also read that many of the crew were stranded on the ship for upwards to a year as they couldn't step onto Lebanese soil, but their repatriation was hindered as they had arrest warrants, presumably for being in Lebanese waters illegally and/or carrying dangerous cargo? They had no choice but to live on the ship amongst the explosives until eventually they won their case to be repatriated (on compassionate grounds - so they didn't have to live next to dangerous materials!) Astounding that Lebanon didn't make their own arrangements to get rid of the explosives after attempts to do so judicially failed. Scary something was stored for so long next to so many people without proper safety measures. Really scary.

I found that BBC one worse than the videos of the explosion itself - it's just so sudden and apocalyptic.

In his defence, he had started a new thread that got merged into this one.

    Ah I see... :D Sorry then @KindaCool

But still. The numbers thing. It's already been replaced with a higher number. Obviously.

This clip from the Guardian of a bride posing for photos seconds before the shockwave is horrible. Everyone is ok but that must have been terrifying.

The power that just smashes all those windows and takes doors off is just immense.

I'll probably end up watching videos of this for months.

As much as you don't really see much in the last one, I think I kind of find it the most distressing.

I don't want to sound unsympathetic, but the people filming the explosion on their phones all come across as total pussies. Yes, there's a gigantic, horrible pressure wave coming right at your face, but would it be too much for you to keep the camera on the explosion?

These two are a little bit too much for me. (The second one in particular has an almost Haneke-esque air of (not so) quiet horror.) Which isn’t stopping me watching them on repeat :(

On the contrary I have a friend who was in London when a terrorist attack occurred, and stood there filming the whole thing, and now I can't shake the feeling he's a psychopath.

I definitely didn’t realise it was THAT widespread. Watching it on TV gives the impression that the damage is mainly in the areas around the port :(

Thankfully it’s a coastal city, meaning that about half that affected circle was on water.

I’ve just noticed that the Damage Reported area on the Beirut map isn’t even shaped like a proper circle. What on earth is one supposed to believe?
