Hoping to break a four year run of NQs, Iceland have released their national selection entries for 2019. As usual, they're all to be performed in Icelandic first, but most have English versions already available should they win.

This rather aggressive number is generating a bit of online buzz, and is one of the few with no English version so far. It does have something about it once you get past those verse vocals, but I really don't think it'd qualify.

A safer choice would be former Eurobander Fridrik Omar, though personally I find the song very bland.

Daniel Oliver has an OK-ish electro thing too.

And finally, OMG HERA BJÖRK IS BACK TO SAVE US ALL!!!! (Sadly her song is really boring :()

Oh God absolutely Hatari for me. Thank God for some LIFE, not that they’ll choose it

When did Hera get so thin?

This one's quite charming too, very The Cardigans. But resolutely not for Eurovision I feel.

I wish I could get on board with Hatari because I like the look, but what a load of absolute racket

Hera and the leather queens qualify from the first semi final

Second semi qualifiers. It has to be the leather queens now really. Fridrik from Euroband's ballad sounds like it wouldn't be out of place at the contest in 1996.

Somewhat pointlessly, they also chose a wildcard from one of the Semi One NQs.

My Icelandic friends are all convinced Fridrik is winning. With the format of the final having a super final, Hatari are going to get a lot of anti votes in that round. Plus Fridrik was very clever getting Regina and Selma as backing singers which will also get him votes. If he does win, it’s another Ari situation, I think.

I’ve read that they’ve changed the rules of the super final this year so that votes from the first round of voting get carried over rather than being reset. This will prevent an anti-Hatari vote having such a big effect I imagine

What is the point of Hatari when they've already said they're not going to Israel as a protest?

They didn't say that. They'll go and perform, but they intend to use the journey to raise awareness of the Palestine issue too.

Most likely it'll be a Loreen scenario where they'll perform their duties onstage and be very outspoken offstage.

I really like the instrumental. I can’t see juries voting for this at all so it will need a huge televote. I would like to see it in the final.

This is fucking INCREDIBLE. I wasn't sold on the Sigur Ros-y chorus at first, but I think it all fits together perfectly now. The staging, the performance, the personas they're basically living... it's mint. This is exactly what Iceland needed to rehabilitate themselves in the contest.

The chorus is still sounding a bit awkward for me, but it is a stonking entry in every other respect.

I don't think it will end up being my favourite, but the vigour of it is amazing. And who can begrudge Iceland?

My only slight quibble is that it does come across as a bit WHITE NATIONALIST.

Maybe if more white nationalists did synth laden goth pop they'd be more appealing.

This is going to do SO WELL. Instantly memorable, people who like it will LOVE IT and deffo vote for it and also on the right side of FUN FOR EUROVISION.
Following Selma in 1999 and Johanna in 2009, I can definitely see this coming second for Ísland in 2019 :disco:

Italy, Iceland and Portugal. I'm SO HERE for 2019's queer artpop Eurovision takeover :disco:

For a generally reliable Euro-country it's actually incredible HOW SHIT Iceland have been over the past few years. How did it go SO WRONG.(Svala's 'Paper' did not count as a good entry)
V much hoping Hatari re-set their Eurovision mojo :disco:

I do fear a sizeable jury drag on this, I can't think of a screamcore entry that's ever not been ranked near the bottom by jurors. (Lordi pre-dated juries, obviously).

Yes, I agree. It should make it coming out of nowhere in the scoring all the more exciting, though.

I'm pretty sure they're safe, but it's anyone's guess how the juries will take to it. They placed similar-ish screamcore/punk entries from Finland and Hungary very low in recent years.

I can't imagine them not being comfortably top ten in the televote in the semi though. So it depends how high, and how bad the jury drag is.
