Hello ALL. After the phenomenal success of last year's solo trip to MARRAKECH, I am planning to go away for 3 nights by myself to ICELAND. Does anyone have any recommendations? My driving is poor so anything would have to be in commuting distance of Reykjavik.

Also, how much would you expect to pay for flights? I have looked on skyscanner and 300 - 400 quid seems to be a minimum, which is a lot more than I thought it would be.

God I would love to go to Iceland. I believe Kate has been, she might be able to help.

You should grab a mate and come WITH. I can do all my sightseeing stuff during the day and we could have dinner / hit the bars come evening.

Ei - I was looking at doing a trip to New York flying with Icelandair stopping off at Reykjavik and it was only costing £420! So I think that's quite pricey.

ICELAND <3<3<3 I'm going back for my birthday as I boasted on Facebook :disco:

The flights were £250 (with WOW Air from Gatwick) and I've just checked my email and they were the same last time (summer 2011). Like anywhere they vary though, I initially looked at going over the Easter weekend and they were RIDICULOUS.

Reykjavik itself is fabulous and you'll be able to get coach tours to all the good spots. Gullfoss, Geysir and the Blue Lagoon are the main MUSTS I would say.

Kate has already suggested most of the things that I would recommend, so I'll repeat that the Blue Lagoon, Gullfoss and Geysir are essential. Þingvellir is less essential, but most of the coach trips that will go to Gullfoss and Geysir will go there too and it is worth seeing. Don't go whale watching and if anyone offers you a small, pale yellow, fishy cube, don't eat it.

I also went to Iceland not that long after Marrakech and the difference was such a RELIEF for me. I hated the constant hassle in Marrakech. The Icelandic people keep themselves to themselves. They have a fabulous dry sense of humour though.

Amazing place. In the vicinity of Reykjavik all the essential tourist things have already been suggested. Just enjoy the landscape - it's incredible. Try and fly in during daylight - the landscape coming into Keflavik is incredible. Basically Bjork's Joga video.

So this never happened but might be happening this year. If I end up going for this job I've accepted, the only days off I'll get will be between Christmas and New Year. Does anyone know if going to Iceland between Christmas and New Year is utterly mental?

I've looked on www.re.is and the tours that encompass the sights that Kate mentioned are all included and appear to run all year. I've looked at the weather and it appears that even though it's cold, it's not THAT cold. i.e. highs of 3 and lows of -2. Given that Iceland will never be particularly warm and London won't be much better in late December, I thought what the hell really.

I just don't want to risk everything being shut or inaccessible.

OOH it will be FABULOUS! Great chance of seeing the Northern Lights and if you were to stay in Reykjavik for NYE I think they go in for it in a pretty big way. CAN I COME

DO YA WANNA? I wasn't intending to stay for NYE (and it's dependent on what happens with my upcoming job and what holiday entitlement I'll get) but I wouldn't be adversed to going for NYE too. I'll keep you INFORMED :disco:

I was seriously contemplating going this winter sometime to try & see the aurora. I guess it depends if I can fit it in around seeing the FAM at Christmas.
