My current one is now officially knackered.

I've generally stuck to standard laptops but I am willing to consider a move to the Mac, people do seem to RAVE about them so...

Can anyone direct me to any HOT DEALS?

    I have the following criteria

    * I value speed and longevity over a bunch of clever groundbreaking knick-nacks I'll never use
    * Battery that will not drain and die within 20 seconds of unplugging would be a NICE CHANGE
    * Not really willing to spend over £500ish
    * I absolutely refuse to purchase from PC World or any PC World sister company (Currys Digital etc). They are the devil.

Oh BRILLIANT thread for me! I am in the EXACT same boat. I definitely want a Mac. Is £600 a decent enough budget?

I believe the Macbook Air starts at around £650-ish so not far off, Tisch! and you can probably get a student discount on that too

I think teachers get a very GOOD discount if you can find one.

Students/teachers get discount. I've ordered all but one of mine as a student and they dont ask for any proof.

    *ignorant*

What are the main benefits/drawbacks of Mac vs Samsung etc?

Do the Apple store REALLY charge TWO HUNDRED POUNDS for a 3-year protection plan?

    FUCK THE FUCK OFF!

There's a student discount anyone can get for around 10% I think or you can increase that to around 15% if you order through a university network.

Ordering through a uni network also gives you the aforementioned 3-year protection plan for free.

All that "configure your MacBook" stuff just makes my tiny brain start to cry. :(

I JUST WANT A BIG OLD STORAGE DEVICE THAT I CAN ALSO USE TO WATCH PORN.

Hmm... I have 100-odd GB of music alone, and I really wanted something where I could keep it all on there without having to keep digging out my external hard drive. Maybe I'll have to leave the Macs, as I can't see anything with decent storage .:(

Or am i being unrealistic? I really have no clue about these things.

There's hardly MUCH TO IT. Just don't buy the extra RAM as you can get it for cheap later.

On the airs you have the ultra expensive SSD drives so capacity is reduced but on the pro's you can get 500GB - 1TB hard drives.

SSD is faster though but I'd say it's a minor plus. I hear the Air can get quite warm

I only got 250GB on my Pro but after I've got Spotify I doubt my music collection will grow to the size it was on my old computer

    So

    * Don't bother buying extra RAM
    * Don't bother with the Protection Plan

What about that hard drive option?

    IN ENGLISH?

250GB of storage would be good enough I reckon. I don't have much other stuff, so for my music to take up 40-50% of the whole space would be fine. I just don't want it taking up like 90%.

A TB of storage would be fucking orgasmic though. You wouldn't have to worry about storing anything anywhere!

    Got sum thinkin' to do...

My MacBook pro only has 250GB hard drive and I have all my music on it, loads of films, archived emails etc and it still runs super fast. 500GB is loads for normal purposes.

go for one of the ATA drives, VoR. the SSD might be faster but so expensive and I'd say the Pro is fast enough

As much as I love my Mac, the actual options for buying it are proper SHIT. Limited storage (compared to the behemoth PCs that are around now) that isn't easy to upgrade and very costly if you do. I don't know how many times I had to tell the salesman that I wanted the storage IN the Mac, I did NOT want to buy one of their shitty £150 storage devices.

I wouldn't exactly call 500GB "limited storage" does anyone really NEED 1TB?

What about virus protection? Do you use the same programmes as other laptops, or do Apple have their own even more LUDICROUSLY expensive variation?

I've got 1tb and I've still got 600GB free, and I used to do a bit of video production. I do graphic design as well, and I've loads of films/music on my computer. 1TB is some serious amount of storage and you're only going to start clearing that when you get into the realm of downloading lossless Blu-Ray rips. And if you are doing that, you need a media center anyway.

500GB is loads, 750GB is plenty. Don't worry about virus software, I've never had any problems.

Go for the serial ATA drive and when the prices of SSD improve just drop one of them in and it'll be like having a new computer all over again.

So I'm not likely to get massive amounts of spyware marring my browsing experience?

HALLELUJAH. One drunken attempt at torrenting a Swedish TV show last year and I STILL haven't been able to get fucking IMESH off my current system.

Speaking of SWEDEN, I'd quite like to have a Swedish keyboard. Is that even REMOTELY POSSIBLE?

Faffing around with charactermap whenever I'm writing på svenska is a RIGHT PAIN IN THE ARSE.
