The problem is there's no universal definition for 'Legend'. But for me at least it's about a stellar beginning, a MIND BLOWING career with unforgettable/unavoidable tracks and personality, a fall to the pits of pop hell and then an ASTRONOMICAL comeback that permanently burns the artist into the fleshy ass of Music History. For all intents and purposes 'Britney' has achieved those, so yes.

My opinion is kind of the opposite of the last option in the poll, in that I think she is right now and to a certain generation, but the next generation that comes through aren't going to have any real interest in her. She hasn't even been interesting to trashy tabloids since about 2007, and she's certainly not going to maintain a legacy with half-arsed live shows and shoddy, faceless albums. She's more Janet than Madonna.

She's quite basic now, so it's hard to say..I would like to see her redeem herself with some bangers and personality.

Legend is someone like Elvis, Madonna, etc who sustained a career over decades - Britney has not done this. She's had several number ones and lots of top ten hits, but over a relatively short space of time, and she isn't going to carry on having hits in the future, so she's equivalent to say, Bay City Rollers - huge for a few years but not a legend.

She is, within her own limited parameters. She will never be seen as a massive talent, but she left a massive mark on pop culture (and culture in general).

I guess it depends how you define it, but she's got as big a claim on it as anyone else who came from the same era or later.

Hmm....I don't think I would say Britney is a LEGEND. Whitney. Mariah. Madonna. Kylie. Diana. Donna. Dusty. Tina. Cher. Celine. All have been known loved by more than one generation. To those in their 20s and 30s she WAS a star, but not really any more. To those outside of that, she hasn't been relevant for a long time.

    Agreed.

She's not up there with the 'greats' though.

I'd rank her amongst her legendary contemporaries as thus:

    Madonna
    Michael Jackson
    Prince
    Whitney
    Abba
    Mariah
    Britney
    Janet

can you imagine her being invited to VH1's Divas 2020 LIVE! in 3D along Aguilera, Clarkson, Bey, Gaga, P!nk and special guests Ryan Tedder + Adam Levine?

    THOUGHT SO!

There will never be a definitive 'yes or no' to this question because we all consider the word LEGEND quite differently.

I think she's a pop ICON perhaps, but not a legend. There are very few real musical legends alive today.. I would consider perhaps Madonna and Prince and that's it.

That seems about right, though I'd put Abba above Whitney. She's very Janet, though with bigger cultural cachet. She would probably come out top of her peers Bey, Rih, JT, Pink, Gag, Katy I suppose.. nobody has made as big an impact since her heyday.

I'm going with yes (as if I wouldn't). Some good points above - I think she's definitely an icon/'legend' for a certain age group (anyone currently aged 20-35 for example) as far as they would recognise a shit load of her songs, that she was the 'phenomenon' popstar of our generation etc. Outside of that she is probably still rather well known - her name, anyway. Perhaps the music not so much, though I'd imagine 'Baby One More Time' would get nearly universal recognition.

Really the most upsetting thing is that despite the vocal ability not being brilliant (though perfectly adequate, to begin with anyway) is that what could have happened had the 2004 breakdown never begun. From just after 'Everytime' the wheels came off. This does, though, also add to her impact - the 2007 finale of the breakdown/pictures of her shaving her head/the umbrella photo etc are some of the most infamous of our generation's pop culture images. But, if she had stayed on track, I reckon she may very well be a complete legend musically now - perhaps not for her input, but imagine the tunes she's pumped out 2007-2013 with ACTUAL popstar performances like she used to do. 'Til The World Ends', 'Womanizer', 'I Wanna Go' being wheeled out at the Grammy's/VMA's with the kind of performances she used to do would've been mind blowing and kept her at the top of her game. I guess we'll never know though which is a shame.
