Lara's mother is Italian and Lara is fluent in Italian so it's not really that much of a surprise.

Lara would be a treat indeed, even if her star profile, her voice and singing technique have deteriorated quite a bit from her late-'90s halcyon days...

Is Raf the same one of "Self Control"/"Gente di mare" fame too? And is Il Volo that American 'popera' trio including one twattish-looking one always wearing 'wacky' novelty specs?

Oh, according to Wiki they actually ARE Italian  I presumed they were American, since they once popped up in an episode of Entourage!

I don't really know how San Remo works, but presumably Lara is only competing to raise her profile in Italy rather than with an eye on Eurovision?

If she did come back, I'd hope it'd be for France or better yet Belgium.

This is currently considered the frontrunner. Opera usually bombs in Eurovision but I think it could be very dangerous indeed.

Is it confirmed that the San Remo main contest winner is going to Vienna, or could it be any one of the artists?

They get first refusal, but they can always say no. I don't think it's been confirmed whether the artist in second place would be the next asked though (do they even have runners up at San Remo?)

Well, Lara was eliminated last night. Il Volo won tonight and will be representing Italy this year.

They've just won San Remo and they appear to have confirmed for Eurovision too.

I wonder what the last Eurovision act was that'd previously had a top ten album in America.

Actually probably Bonnie Tyler, but there's less of a gap with Il Volo.

I've no doubt this will end up doing well on the night, but I don't think this genre of music will ever pick up enough votes for a win. If 'Sognu' couldn't do it after all of the hype that surrounded it in 2011, then this won't either.

I think the same thing will happen with the Italian song that happens every year, certain section of the fandom will hype it up as a potential winner but when it comes down to it it'll only manage a top 10 at best.

Not bad, but I don't think this is the winner.

So I'm not sure whether this was an April Fool's joke or just sloppy journalism hastily disguised as an April Fool's joke, but either way it's confirmed not to be the real deal. :basil:

I mean I can vaguely understand how it happened but this still makes so little sense to me as a televote winner - let alone a LANDSLIDE. The most incongruous winner on that front since Everybody.

Nek! :o He had a MASSIVE hit here in the late 90s with this. I don't think I can play it just once after months and months of overplay, it was too much. It was very usual for Italian singers to record a Spanish version of their albums back then, some of them were very successful here.

I wish Rai would bring back Carlo Conti. Looking back 2015-17 really were the golden years.
