This Digital Spy review is SPOT ON.

One pop return has been on everyone's lips in 2016: Lady Gaga's. After floating across the globe with Tony Bennett and their jazz standards album Cheek To Cheek, receiving a standing ovation at the Oscars for her soaring Sound Of Music medley and getting gruesome as The Countess in American Horror Story, Mother Monster is back doing what she does best: producing a balls-out banger.

Anticipation for 'Perfect Illusion' couldn't have been higher. Early reviews from radio stations declared an almighty return, fan forums were awash with excitement and apprehension in equal measure, and imagery from the campaign hinted at a more rock-focussed energy than we're used to from Gaga.

That's what swinging a mic above your head and wearing black boots means, right?

What 'Perfect Illusion' is, though, is a combination of the three phases of Gaga we've seen before. At its core it's a simple pop song with lyrics about being tricked by your own heart: you thought you were in love, but actually it's all an illusion and quite frankly you need to wake up. It's as straightforward as they come. This harks back to Gaga's beginnings, where tracks like 'Just Dance' and 'Poker Face' neatly packaged their ideas.

As for that mix of guitar and synth grumbles, it's difficult not to be reminded of Gaga's severely underrated single 'Marry The Night' from the Born This Way era. The thumping beat adds to this, underpinning the whole production with that superstar sass she created back in 2011 at the peak of her global domination.

"What about ARTPOP?" we hear you say – with some trepidation. Well that phase comes through in Gaga's vocal delivery and the way she stitches together the verses with the chorus in a slightly offbeat fashion.

It's all well and good drawing upon former successes, but what's new for this Gaga in 2016?

This is a Lady Gaga banger that's been undressed – both in sound and image. The disco-rock refrain pretty much blasts you at full volume from the 30-second point onwards, but compared to the star's last few releases, it doesn't feel overly cluttered. It has a decent melody, and a surging, stadium-worthy build-up that echoes Bruce Springsteen.

Elton John suggested that Gaga had to go back to basics following ARTPOP, and she has obviously taken his advice. This isn't the overwrought, ear-bashing and sometimes confusing bluster of her more recent incarnations, with their Jeff Koons references, on-stage vomiting and forgotten iPad app. 'Perfect Illusion' is Gaga getting to grips with songwriting again – and she sounds all the better for it.

I've gone for a 7 again as that was my initial rate. But it's already down to a 6.

It has been for a few hours, hasn't it?

I'm most interested to see when the gap between it and #2 stops growing.

Too early to jump at any conclusion, of course, but for now its sales start looks more promising than Applause's.

I like it, it manages to be both interesting and familiar at the same time and I think it's the type of song that rewards with repeated plays. She does sound very upset though, I hope she's okay.

Well this just came on the radio.

What a pile of average bollocks. Does not sound a hit, either.

    Finally listened to this.

I don't hate it. but it's not the blockbuster I was expecting.

It sounds like Phixx covering Duran Duran or something.

Aww, look at Bunton expecting a kiss.

Did she not even piss on Gaga's hand? How boring.

There's a 10/10 moment here, but it's not quite there yet. There just needs to be a little more grit and grime on the production in the verses, she needs to use a different vocal style on the chorus, and the chorus can stay but it needs to become a bridge

    To the CHORUS OF VENUS

It's weird to me that she worked with Mark Ronson and you can't really hear any of his trademarks over this. In fact, her basic sound doesn't seem to have progressed very much at all.

It's also weird that the pre-press talked about how they were constantly tweaking and adding to it, and yet at no point did anybody say "Hang on, maybe this song needs a chorus?"

In fairness, not really having a chorus in the traditional sense fits in with Tame Impala's style.

It DOES have a chorus in the traditional sense, doesn't it? It's just a pretty weak one, when her best songs smack us over the head with one.

It's definitely got a chorus, it just sounds like a pre-chorus or a middle 8.

    I'm still enjoying it though.

Still no. 1 on iTunes and no. 14 on Apple Music which seems a pretty decent result to me, given where she left off with Artpop in terms of public goodwill.

Given that the day of release is the best it's likely to do, I'd say that's quite troublesome. It, and the album, must have cost a fortune.

No, I wouldn't have been that shocked to see it peak at #5 or something and then drift. I guess it's only after the first 24 hours or so that we see how well it has managed to appeal outside of the hardcore fanbase and into the more casual fan and beyond.

Streaming is more important than digital sales (see Rise) and being added to the right playlists are paramount. In that regard it's been included on Spotify's biggest, and the song already has over half a million streams on their US server.

This thread is really missing the vital country-by-country iTunes updates from Brunei etc that we are usually treated to with a release of this magnitude :(

Still nothing on Grindr by the way.

She was always going to be huge out of the gate, despite the disaster ArtPop www, she has a big fanbase and is still a big name. It's whether she will do enough to convert the general public, is what really matters. It's far too early judge.
