It got good reviews I seem to remember but for some reason it's never clicked with me like all her other albums have...

I think the album should've ended on "Blackest Day" but "Swan Song" is the strongest of the last three. But that's not saying much!
there's one moment in particular in Swan Song that I love to DEATH, where she plays with the melody for the final repetition of the chorus and I will never sing again... you WON'T WORK a-NOTHER DAY it just has this really unexpected blast of urgency like she's finally awoken from her xanax slumber and she wants to get her LIFE TOGETHER somewhere that's NOT CALIFORNIA. it's a bit of a GUT PUNCH somehow. 08 Honeymoon 07 Music to Watch Boys To 09 Terrence Loves You 08 God Knows I Tried 09 High By the Beach 08 Freak 07 Art Deco 07 Religion 08 Salvatore 12 The Blackest Day 10 24 10 Swan Song

Cut out the section from Freak up to and including Religion, and remove DLMBM from the end, and it's a strong collection

you know sometimes I'm so carefree with a joy that's hard to hide when, Lana? when? I unashamedly lover this rendition though and think it's a fab closer. dazzling production that comes totally full circle harking back to the title track. the last four songs really are their own superior little EP. 08 Honeymoon 07 Music to Watch Boys To 09 Terrence Loves You 08 God Knows I Tried 09 High By the Beach 08 Freak 07 Art Deco 07 Religion 08 Salvatore 12 The Blackest Day 10 24 10 Swan Song 09 Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
If the album didn't end at Blackest Day, I think an instrumental interlude along the same lines as the title track would have been a fitting closer. There is a disconnect between the opening few songs and this cover and I don't like it.
I don't even dislike her version. I just don't see the point. B-side / deluxe / iTunes bonus track material? Sure. But not to close the album proper!

apparently my average is 8.6 which... OK! I'd give it a 7.5 though. it's a slog in places, with a small handful of tremendous highs.

I'm glad we did this. it just reaffirmed my views on the album but giving it another proper chance was long overdue. NFR! next time?
Yes, probably in two weeks' time or alternatively the evening before the "White Dress" rollout in late Feb.....
Thanks @POP! I look forward to NFR! It's gonna be emosh. I can rarely get through California without having a MOMENT
Also emotionally preparing myself for other NFR! moments... there's THINGS I want to say to you, but I'll just let you LIVE....
Yes thanks @POP! Another fun one Honeymooners/Freaks/Black Beauties/Sad Girls... What do the Del Reyyers call themselves? 07 Honeymoon 08 Music to Watch Girls To 09 Terrance Loves You 10 High By the Beach 05 Freak 06 Art Deco 07 Religion 09 Salvatore 11 The Blackest Day 10 24 09 Swan Song 06 Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood
"Red Party Dresses", bien sur. I was working until now - but Honeymoon's an oddly moody bitch of a record, which I find appealing but I can't listen to it all the time. But I can listen to High by The Beach on repeat for an hour.
