The trouble with the word "transsexual" is disappointingly banal - it has the word "sex" in it. This makes people believe it has something to do with sex as in intercourse rather than sex as in gender. As such, the term was speedily rejected as soon as someone came up with an improvement. Transgender is more specific and easier to understand and, therefore, doesn't confuse thickos.
The UK uses the WHO standards which continue to use the medical term "Transsexualism" which is quite the most ghastly combination of syllables.
Yeah I admit I haven't got a fucking clue what's going on with gender at the moment.
I'm going to associate myself as gender negative.
It shouldn't be 'transwoman', it should be... 'trans...person'.
Especially when people shout out at you while you're walking through the marketplace.
Do remember the space in "trans woman", there's folk who'd burn yr house down for that.
Anyway, I find the average streetshouter goes with plain old "tranny".
Back when I were a lad you could call a tranny a tranny and she'd doff her fascinator and say thankin thee. And you could leave your door open all day and fags were 20p from paki shop and the pakis didn't mind being called pakis. Worlds gone mad.
There's a common misunderstanding(?) here that transsexual only refers to people who have undergone a extensive psychiatric assessment and cleared for SRS, while transgender is often used in the media on cross dressers. Even occasional drag acts count
That was originally the case, at least in the limited circles in which I spun. Because the medical terminology is outdated, that association continues for some people but most folk have moved on.
I was trying to test my mother's knowledge on issues of trans and gender and then stumbled over my own definitions.
Ach, it's still evolving really...non-binary peeps are coming up with all sorts of fabulousness.
I can tell you one thing, it's made my degree a lot easier. It's all a bunch of sociology students I tell ye.
That is what we were told transgendered meant in the LGBT soc at uni too. Though that was 20 years ago now.
Singapore as the UK circa 1997 sounds fabulous in its own way
It doesn't get better.
It seem a while back that pre-op and post-op transsexual (remember it's a double S!) were the two PC descriptions, as if the simple matter of deeply invasive urological surgery determined everything.
This word was born to be pronounced with a lisp.
Or a huge amount of sibilance.
That has reminded me that people who put sibilance on the x in the word homosexual want shooting.
Oh I LOVE it. I mean I'd never actually use it, but when certain STATELY HOMOS do, it always gives me a frisson.
Beirut holding its first pride this week and it fill me with joy!
One of my friends is working on it. *.*
Looking forward to Riyadh Pride 3019.
I suspect by that stage Saudia Arabia will be OKAY with hand-holding in public. They're barely ready for a PEOPLE Pride, let alone one from any kind of minority group.
I very much doubt Saudi Arabia will exist by then. When's the oil due to run out?
Babe, you're an ARAB. Surely you already know that the entire Middle East is okay with two men holding hands?!
ameraal refused to hold mine when I met with him in Dubai.
thats because its you, bebs
even i wouldn't with you
Question is when it will be okay for men and women to hold hands, let alone for the queer and polyamorous.
What MEN? I was talking about ANYONE. They're so backwards. And I only really mentioned Saudia Arabia because RS was referencing it.
Yeah what RS said lol
I HAVE A QUESTION. Why do trendy queer women use "yr"? I see Octy is joining in.
As in YOUR?
It's all turning terribly Hebrew
Although at least they have NIQQUD
Well exactly, you said it just fine.
He probably did. I just see everything through my broken gay lens.
I stole it off of "Expressway To Yr Skull" by Sonic Youth, I had no idea it was a thing...
