I've driven through Friern Barnet and New Southgate - they seem safe. Tube journey's a bit long though.

Finsbury Park is ROUGH AS. I'd think twice about walking around there at night myself.

Thing is though - living out can be just as stressful. Long tube journeys, epic taxi fares, dreary surroundings... and you'll still be living in a big, big city with not a rolling hill in sight.

I know nothing about North London suburbia. But I wouldn't want to live in most of them places.

I'm working in Hertfordshire though so I'd be getting the overground to commute. As for hills... I've lived in East Anglia for the last 6 years :D

Muswell Hill/Crouch End are LOVELY, a bit difficult to access by tube though, you got to bus it.

I'd put Frien Barnet and Southgate next in terms of lovelyness, one of my workmates has a flat in Southgate.

Ally Pally next, it has a BR station nearby but no tube again.

Arnos Grove and Finsbury Park down the bottom I'm afraid although they are both great for transport!

Kate you want to live somewhere like West Hampstead or whatnot, you're a millionaire and can afford it. It's nice, central enough without being too stressful.

The most stressful thing about West Hampstead is dealing with its ridiculous amount of identically named train stations.

Hatfield, Welham Green, Brookmans Park, Potters Bar, Hadley Wood, New Barnet, Oakleigh Park, New Southgate, Alexandra Palace, Hornsey, Harringay, Finsbury Park, Drayton Park, Highbury & Islington, Essex Road, Old Street

    SHUT UP

I have heard some dodgy things about Islington  Is Highbury nice then... I don't like the thought of being surrounded by smug cuntwipe Arsenal fans, but I guess we all have to make sacrifices

I'd only live in Crouch End and Muswell Hill out of all of those.

None of the places you listed compares to Islington. Highbury might be okay - I don't think Arsenal live there anymore.

They infest the Piccadilly line at a certain hour, but I get the impression you're more of a bus person.

    I'd SECOND that.

Though I'd stick to west of Old St if I was Kate and not veer east to Hoxton.

What are the stresses of living in Central London?

I can only think of the number of LondonLite distributors.
