This is the start of a second career as a self-care/mindfulness guru.At which, in fairness, I reckon she would be a total boss.

I don't need an album for contemplating a raisin for 20 minutes though, thanks Marina.

I’m loving “Superstar” far more than the other two. It’s got me feeling more optimistic about the album again.

Orange Trees coming friday with video

this one had better be good because to be 2 songs into a new Marina era with zero new Marina songs in rotation is not what the doctor ordered

i quite like handmade heaven now but i wouldn't call it essential. i don't like superstar, it's a bit lazy and

not sure if this (rather culture beat-esque) remix by krystal klear of neutron dance (or the 112th best song of 2018) fame is noteworthy but i don't hate it.

Orange Trees is nice. But I don’t love it either. Thank god it’s more upbeat.

Yeah, you could chuck a dart into the self-help section of Waterstones and write yr own Marina song at the minute.

"Orange Trees" is super average. And I hate the "OoOoOoOrange" bits

To think that she had given us (I think) 'Froot', 'Happy' and (IMO career-best) 'I'm A Ruin' by this point in the last campaign :D

As much as I now properly love Handmade Heaven (+ KK remix), it's been QUITE entertaining seeing gays online trying to rationalise these new songs before basically giving up and realising Marina at this point in her life is a different artist to who Marina And The Diamonds was :D

I think you're right. This isn't just about dropping "...and the Diamonds", this is looking like an actual gear shift.

I've updated the thread title but it's begging to feel like "Marina"'s first album rather than the 4th album by Marina Diamandis, if you know what I mean.

i think to a great extent she really is a different person - i feel like she used to be an insecure girl trying to make it. now she's a "successful" woman who is coming to terms with the world.

She's released the whole 8-song "Love" part of the album to the usual streaming services and to download i.e. I can't hear any of it unless she youtubes it as well.

I'm assuming the downloads count as "grat tracks" and the sales counted when she releases the full thing.

To Be Human is fantastic. The whole thing feels like an interweaving of Froot and Electra Heart.

Enjoy Your Life is also a winner.

To Be Human is probably the best of the bunch. Nothing is standing out yet though.

I don’t think any of the music she’s put out is radically different from her previous albums. It’s just all a bit dull so far.

I’ve not paid a huge amount attention to this reinvention up until now but To Be Human is brilliant

welcome to cliche city. the songwriting is absolutely terrible. to be human is packed with so many platitudes that it literally made my stomach churn.
this has been really weak on first listen. the only remotely interesting one for me is end of the earth and even that is so half-arsed i can't be bothered.

    let's hope fear is better.

End of the Earth is absolutely DEVASTATING, 10/10 album for that apocalyptic outro alone.

The lyrics of To Be Human are SO on the nose, but it's easily the best song on the album.

From Paris to Berlin, with every disco I've been in,
My heart is beating for love.
Shipped to Auschwitz - on the railway,
Worse than Milton Keynes? Who can say?

so after dipping in and out of this all weekend

    08 Handmade Heaven
    05 Superstar
    08 Orange Trees
    07 Baby
    09 Enjoy Your Life
    08 True
    10 To Be Human
    06 End of the Earth

The section from Enjoy to Human is just marvelous. She can do better though. Much better.

I can't help but think if she'd gone with To Be Human - True - Handmade Heaven as the run of pre-album singles this might have been better-received and anticipated despite the material still being the same. 'Superstar' really is an unnecessary turd of a song.

True, To Be Human, Handmade Heaven and End Of The Earth are up there with classic Marina for me, the rest much less so.

I've noticed her getting a LOT of flack online for the lyrics to 'Enjoy Your Life' saying it's quite irresponsible for somebody who has based most of their brand on documenting mental health struggles to declare people should 'sit back and enjoy their problems' :D

I haven't seen this but I guess the answer is going to be that she's lived and learned or some such. But that's my concern about this whole album - that's she's swallowed The Little Book Of Calm in her sleep and now can't stop coughing bit of it out...

I thought so too. They're rather childish. Almost like a nursery rhyme. Especially:

Fly to Athens, pass the Parthenon
See the village where my father's from
    To Chicago from Angola
    São Paulo to Verona

Is it over dramatic to think "Superstar" and "Orange Trees" are the two worst things she's ever done? And they're pushed as singles or some equivalent thereof. I honestly don't think there's anything of hers or any album tracks previous I dislike more.

The irony after Handmade Heaven thinking she wasn't specifically focused on hit-chasing and yet those two reek of nothing else. They represent the very worst of current trends right down to insipid chilled out (i.e not there) "choruses" of humming.

Thank fuck the rest is quite good although yes lyrically she seems a bit...basic this time. To Be Human is gorgeous and I don't mind the verse lyrics but that chorus, sublime as it is, is simple poetry by numbers, probably because the words are so drawn out and clear.

"All the things that I've done and I've seen
Still I don't know what it all means" :bad:

Compare that to Savages and it's like someone totally different. I'm far from being a lyric nazi either, usually I don't care but it's just so noticeable with her.

Still can't wait to see her next month and hoping the Fear part delivers the dark goods

    09 Handmade Heaven
    05 Superstar
    04 Orange Trees
    07 Baby
    08 Enjoy Your Life
    09 True
    08 To Be Human
    08 End of the Earth

It's all been salvaged to a degree but I'm still underwhelmed. No sure fire TENS from Marina at this stage is a major anxiety trigger (though Handmade Heaven is close)
