In last week's thrilling edition of Melfest - youth triumphed over age, experience and the experience of shagging the aged as Liamoo, Hanna Ferm and Malou sailed to the finals, while Jan Malmsjö, Margaret and Oscar Enestad got the Swedish cold shoulder.

Will the Swedes continue their Logan's Run-esque voting patterns in Leksand? Let's have a look at the contenders...

    1. The Lovers of Valdarro - Somebody Wants
    (Peter Boström, Thomas G:son)

Judging from the above press shot, I'd suggest that somebody wants a peroxide intervention and to give their grandma her net curtains back, but despite vaguely insufferable appearances, there's a fair bit of potential to this pair of millennial Monroes. For a start, they've got the songwriting team behind Euphoria, and their material to date suggests an electro banger is likely on the cards. They won the radio show for amateurs, which usually spells doom, but it seems unlikely Christer and co would trust them with with opening the show unless they had something decent under their statement hats.

    2. Dolly Style - Habibi
(Jimmie Jansson, Palle Hammarlund, Robert Norberg)

Not so much a pop trio these days as a culturally insensitive work placement scheme, Dolly Style's lineup has gone through so many changes over the years that at this point the oldest members of the group are probably the wigs. What to make of Habibi, with its middle east-appropriating title and bewildering threat of 0% humour? Fuck knows - but if the purple haired one doesn't honour the intellectually subnormal performance tradition of her fallen sisters, I for one will be very disappointed.

    3. Martin Stenmarck - Låt skiten brinna
(Uno Svenningsson, Tim Larsson, Tobias Lundgren)

Old beenie hat returns for his third attempt in six years at recapturing long-faded former glories. Even Linda Bengtzing's gotten herself a day job these days Marty, the party's over. This one was co-written by Swedish legend Uno Svenningsson, which is presumably why he's putting himself through all this again. Maybe he'll get Andreas Johnson lucky and enough of the younger artists will deliver performances of staggering incompetence to allow him to sneak into Andra Chansen. But don't hold your breath.

    4. Lina Hedlund - Victorious
(Melanie Wehbe, Richard Edwards, Dino Medanhodzic, Johanna Jansson)

In an even more barren than usual year for potentially competitive schlager divas (sorry, Arja), all gay eyes over 30 are on Lina Hedlund, easily the most fabulous third of Alcazar 3.0 (sorry, Tess) to deliver this year's Party Voice-style anthem. The songwriting team isn't exactly A-list, and it's unlikely that Lina can rely on the level of goodwill that Jessica Andersson apparently commands from the wider Swedish public, so the risk of homo heartbreak is high here, but she's bound to turn out a fabulous show either way.

    5. Omar Rudberg - Om om och om igen
(Omar Rudberg, Johan Lindbrandt, Robin Stjernberg, Jens Hult)

The third and final FO&O-er to go solo, Omar was initially looking doomed to be overshadowed by Oscar's hotly tipped Harold and Maude anthem. Sadly, that was not to be, so all cute little Omar needs to do is avoid the old jumbo plats and he can probably chalk this one up as a win. Robin Stjernberg has already written two Melfest winners to date, so don't be surprised if this emerges as something of a dark horse.

    6. Rebecka Karlsson - Who I Am
(Rebecka Karlsson, Anderz Wrethov, Henric Pierroff)

Yet another Idol alum, 18 year old Rebecka Karlsson has a crack songwriting team and extensions that mean business, so despite the relative lack of name recognition, don't be surprised if she's one of this year's breakout competitors. With the sixth placed contenders going direkt in both of the previous semis, she'll be looking to make it three for three...

    7. Jon Henrik Fjällgren - Nörrsken
(Fredrik Kempe, David Kreuger, Niklas Carson Mattsson, Jon Henrik Fjällgren)

Is it just me or is Jon Henrik looking less like a brooding man of the woods and more like the third-billed star of a regional panto production of Aladdin with each passing year? Having made the top 3 on both of his previous outings, it's probably now or never for Sweden's favourite joiker to finally grab the win. Early reports suggest this is a more contemporary number than his previous entries, mixing his traditional sound with some Kygo-esque beats. If Sweden are ever to be convinced to send a song in their native language to Eurovision, it's probably now...

So many returnees this heat. But at this point I'm behind Lina and whatever ditty she's sending. She's always had the best vox in Alcazar IMHO

:D at Jon Henrik having the look of a regional panto star.

I'm looking forward to Lina and The Lovers of Valdaro's offerings, and maybe one of them just might sneak into AC, who knows.

If @Suomi isn’t lying on the floor and unable to move after the Lina clip, then I don’t know WHAT the world’s coming to.

I’d say I like 6 out of 7 this week. Omar is shit and looks like a cunt, but Gary Wilmot Fjallgren and Rececca sound like obvious DTF candidates.

Rebecka Karlsson should walk this heat. It's totally ripping off some recent-ish chart hit (This Is Me maybe?) but it's the song I can most easily imagine onstage in Tel Aviv of everything we've heard so far.

Jon Henrik Fjällgren's song is pleasant, but really old school folk-schlager. You wouldn't bat an eyelid if it turned up in the mix for Kalle Moraeus.

Lina sounds like a classic fifth placer. :( Hopefully she can sell the shit out of it but I'm not optimistic. It's no PARTY VOICE.

Lina not giving up on HER GENERATION :disco:

Bit disappointed in the sound of The Lovers of Valdaro. It doesn't sound like their other stuff.

Yet another selection of songs this week that sound like they were written in the space of 5 minutes. If Christer and co were striving for mediocrity this year, they're nailing it.

'Somebody wants' is probably my favourite but that falsetto is worrying. Between that and the overgenerous use of autotune across the heat, I hope we're not heading for an enslaught of vocal trainwrecks on Saturday.

I assume they have an impressive stage show because their song didn't sound all that from the clip.

That's what I assumed at first but apparently 1/3 of their votes were from adults. :D Although I don't think they'll go DTF either, AC or possibly 5th in SF seems in the cards.

This is the first time I've watched this properly I think.

I'm not keen on many of them :D

Dolly Style were fun, Lina was fabulous in a way that's going nowhere. Rebecka sounded like a total car crash at the end to me

And yes I thought Omar was a dead cert...

JHF's song is definitely his weakest so far. I loved the Lovers of Valdaro verses, but the chorus didn't work for me at all. Lina's song predictably just put a grin on my face :D

Christ, what is happening to MF? These new voting rules have shaken everything up in a massive blender! That's two weeks in a row where an unexpected song got through to the final. These pretty boys with basic songs are FUCKED now. I really can't wait to see the breakdown of the voting groups. It's going to be fascinating.

Jon Henrik was fine for what it is but an MF winner it is not. Clearly won the semi though. He is so BORING though. He just STOOD at the edge of the stage when he came on during Lina's winning reprise and clapped uncomfortably. I know it's far from his style but he could have enjoyed it. I can't see it winning MF though. I don't really see they international juries going for it in droves.

Lina was a MASSIVE surprise. Was sure she was not getting through that first round at first and then at the end I was sure she was 5th. She said in the little interview afterwards that she was also sure she was going out too, you can see she has resigned herself to it. I love the unpredictableness of MF this year. The song really isn't anything new but it was catchy and she gave a solid and assured performance. Quite similar to Party Voice in a way but a MUCH better performance. When that chorus kicks in it's just pure unadulterated schlager-pop.

Rebecka seems a very sweet girl and I think that helped her get votes. The song is basic, not bad but it's like a hybrid of so many other female pop songs - I heard Love Me Like You Do and Dance Like Nobody's Watching by Molly Sandén in there. The staging was also a bit crap, but at least she looked ok compared to some of the other outfits she has been wearing during rehearsals. Vocally she was off at times, but AC kinda felt right.

Martin was one I was not expecting to get through but his song was alright actually, and better than his last few attempts. Interesting lyrics too. Another solid performance but I think AC is kinda as far as it will end up.

Now onto Dolly Style. I was predicting them to be dead last due to the new voting rules and then to all of a sudden have them as a direct finalist was a little surreal. In retrospect I probably should have remembered their vote would be heavily impacted with the split, though I would not be surprised if they actually got more votes in total than at least one of the AC qualifiers. They actually performed ok although the chorus was heavily backtracked. It will do well for them on Spotify for sure.I quite liked it and it wasn't the offensive onslaught some people feared. I just think they are way too niche to do well.

The Lovers of Valdaro were a little boring and going on first was a bad slot for them, kinda like it was for Midnight Boy a few years ago. This is the classic example of a song sounding great in studio but loses its power live, it just felt so SPARSE. Not bad, but just too forgettable. Bleach blond one is very cute though! :)

Omar was a shock, and even more so than Oscar last week because he gave what I thought was a fairly decent performance, although the falsetto was a bit much. He clearly is a massive Rihanna fan though. The song was ok, but like Dolly Style, had limited appeal but at least with Dolly Style it would probably have got votes from some parents of young kids. Can't really see anyone outside of 10-15 year old teenage girls and a smattering of gays voting for it.

As for the show, it was fine, but they clearly missed Sarah this week, so wil be good to see her back next week.

It's quite tough to predict a winner so far, we will know more next week, but I think Hanna featuring LIAMOO (because it really is HER song) have a good chance. But let's wait and see!

I was all bored and ready throw myself out the window after the awful Estonian final, but then tuned in for some Swedish treats. And oh, did they deliver! The BWO-tastic Lovers of Valdaro are going on my playlist. Dolly Style gave me Life! Lina going to the finals = GAYGASM!

The problem with Lina going to the final is that we have to wait another week (or two, I can't remember) before it's released :(

Next Saturday at 2130 CET. Lisa Ajax has been saying that’s when her song will be released, so that will be regardless of how she does, sí I assume the others not yet released will be at the same time.

It is like EKO - Red again. You can send an absolutely stonking song and if you’re an unknown you’re fucked.

    **plays EKO -Red on repeat**

**gotta let our love colour us red**
