I cannot believe I am only just watching this. What an absolute joy from start to finish. Faye Dunaway, slathered in cold cream, screaming 'NO WIRE HANGERS' is the absolute highlight. Diana Scarwid looks about 35.

    Team Joan throughout of course.

EDIT: I bet we already have a thread.

Sorry to be a naysayer but I like it, but don't love it. The first half is full of camp fabulousness, but it runs out of that around the half way mark and is far too long.

Utterly fabulous. Faye Dunaway really DELIVERED with this one. But then, when does she not?

Faye Dunaway refuses to even discuss this film in most interviews. This is a rare occasion of her talking about it.

"She said, only Faye Dunaway has the talent, and the class, and the courage to make a real star..."

Love Faye's barely concealed smugness at this point :eyes:

Incredible film which pretty much ruined Dunaway's career.

I am surprised she hasn't claimed it as the camp classic it was from the start (even though it flopped on release).

I tend to assume Faye Dunaway has been retired for decades. It always surprises me to see that she's still working, just in incredibly minor fare. So weird, she was such a huge star in her day.

Maybe it's more a case of her being a nightmare to work with than the ruinous effect of this film.

She was amazing in a Greys Anatomy a few years ago playing a diva like Doctor who refused to change her ways

I recently seen The Handmaid's Tail (which is an amazing book in my opinion), and she was very camp in that too.

Obviously Mommie Dearest is a 10, and that Christina girl is insufferable. This reminds me that I have still to watch my Trog DVD.

I adore The Handmaids Tale book, but I've never seen the film. I got the impression it was a bit of a disappointment.

It doesn't come to life (scenes that are vivid with me to this day weren't really captured well at all), but you know who finds her own way through it as you can imagine.

    NO WIRE HANGERS EVER.

I've never sat down and watched the film, but with the amount of :disco:-worthy clips I've seen over the years I can only assume I've seen it all.

Joan Crawford made a very wise move to abuse her hateful, ungrateful, adopted spawn.

If she hadn't then evil Christina wouldn't have written her spiteful book.

And Joan would be far less remembered than she is today (only a select few 1930's and 1940's film stars are widely remembered today - Norma Shearer anyone?)

This is a funny clip where Rutyana Alda (who played Joan's maid in the film) dishes about life on the Mommie Dearest set.

Faye sounds like perfect casting as Joan - a complete psycho.

Inspired by this thread, I downloaded and watched this tonight. AMAZING. My only point of reference previously had been Mariah's shit impression of Joan in the series 3 Drag Race Snatch Game (and now all of Ru's 'Tina!' exclaimations and 'You love to make me hurt you' slaps make sense too).

Faye Dunaway was wonderfully psychotic and I loved the way they framed certain scenes as they would've in the 1940s...some of the shots of Joan emerging from shadows or looming down on Christina looked like a direct homage to early Hitchcock.

    Thanks for the recommendation, Moopy.

True, but I think Baby Jane saw to it that she would be remembered above other huge box office stars such as Shearer, not to mention lesbian cult classics such as Johnny Guitar. Joan's filmography is one of the very best - no matter what trash she was in (and unlike Bette, she did settle for less than top-billing after a point), she scenery chewed, swallowed, regurgitated and chewed again for her life.

Her book 'Joan Crawford: My way of life' sounds like essential reading.

Just whiled away a fairly miserable afternoon re-watching this. Truly up there with Showgirls as a classic of the so-bad-it's-genius genre. Dunaway's performance is astonishing.

I need to re-watch this, it's been years. I wonder if the real Joan would have got on better (or worse) with a gay son.

Knowing our Joan, she'd probably have tried to seduce him.

Oh that did make me laugh. There goes my fantasy then - I would have just put up with all the histrionics, there's no way I'd have been left out that will.

I keep my sunglasses on a wire hanger. She's rolling in her grave, I'm sure.

She was cremated. Possibly just to make sure, she did have a lot of comebacks.

Has this ever been on youtube before? Faye giving an interview promoting Mommie Dearest.

    <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/vcAtqZEg-Yw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It's a shame she never had a Jane Fonda style comeback. Incredibly WATCHABLE FACE.
