Gay interest movie about an African American gay guy through three different times in his life. Naomie Harris plays the mother and it looks real good (or maybe it's just the music but I'm excited for this one).

A screener of this year's must see gay interest drama has made its way onto the usual torrent sites. Seeing as my time for cinema outings has been curtailed of late I might just curl up on the sofa with a bottle of wine and a box of tissues.

Someone tell me if the screener is good. I might wait a bit anyway since it's coming out on the 7th officially.

Lol, no but it's being released on iTunes so that would be a guaranteed good quality torrent or I might even blind but it. It doesn't look like we're getting Fences or Manchester here as well so I have to torrent those as well.

This is surely the strongest entry of this year's oscar bunch (only missed "hacksaw ridge" so far), it also doesn't feel like your typical oscar fare.

Loved the pacing, acting, cinematography and soundtrack. Well done everyone - a 9 or 10 out of 10.

I thought it was ok rather than outstanding. It held my interest but I wasn't losing my shit. 7/10.

HOW THE FUCK Ali has got an Oscar nomination I do not know (well I do... :side-eye:) but Naomie Harris is DEFINITELY deserving.

This is what I want to know. He wasn't bad, but why is he being singled out over any of the actors playing Chiron or Kevin? The two playing them in the second third were my stand outs, the beach scene and the one at school that followed were my favourites.

I really enjoyed it, made a refreshing change for cinema.

Well I thought this was just lovely. In a year with so many self-conscious Oscar baity movies, this felt like a genuine art film that's deservedly getting a lot of attention.

The performances were so good. I was a bit thrown by how physically different the third actor was from the first two, but he really captured the sad, self-conscious posture of the other two. I expected to see more of Mahershala Ali based on the awards he's won, but he did dominate the first act of the film. His scene outside the car with Naomie Harris' character, and the 'faggot' discussion were just wonderful. The definition of a great supporting performance rather than a cheating co-lead.

I'm really eager to watch it again.

For whatever reason my Cineworld hasn't been showing this so I watched the download, a bad decision in some respects as the aesthetic of the film is so important. It's beautifully directed and there are some shots of absolute beauty. But the story felt a bit weak in some respects. The visceral gut punch of emotion didn't really materialise but I wouldn't say I was disappointed.

But what a stunning performance from Naomie Harris. The scene with the cigarette lighter was outstanding and dare I say it more affecting than Viola's great scene. Mahershala Ali was great but like others have said I'm not sure it's an Oscar winning performance. I really hope Michael Shannon wins.

And I couldn't work out where I recognised the cook from and lo and behold it's only the real life Cuba Gooding Jnr from AHS: Roanoke.

I really couldn't believe that Mahershala Ali is the one chosen for all the award nominations. Ashton Sanders (teen version of Chiron) was stunning. I instantly thought he was the one people had been raving about. What an incredible talent.

I thought this was exceptional. One of those rare movies where each and every cast member gets it absolutely spot on. I'm a sucker for a coming-of-age movie and this is probably my favourite film of the year so far.

I liked this but did not love it, it was shot beautifully (it's a shame Barry a Jenkins will most likely lose to Damien Chazelle).

Naomi Harris was really good, probably the best she's ever been. I can see how Mehrshala is the one getting the award recognition being the biggest name and having a prolific year.

Ashton Sanders was the best actor in this by a mile. That was a truly haunting performance.

    Naomie Harris was also excellent.

In fact there were no weak performances in this.

I loved it - while it was very light on actual plot it was very beautiful and it's good to see a proper indie film gain such attention.

This is an arthouse movie really – the plot is quite incidental, nothing much happens. But the cinematography is stunning. This is a beautifully shot film. The sense of yearning that Chiron feels for his friend is beautifully captured and really quite painful to watch.

This was the first film with an all black cast to win the Best Film Oscar. It was also the first film with a gay lead character to win.

Considering that films with gay lead characters generally require a tragic ending where the gay character must die as a sacrificial lamb, so that we can all learn a lesson about humanity (I’m looking at ‘Brokeback Mountain’; ‘Milk’; ‘Philadelphia’ here) the fact that Chiron lives and in fact looks like he might find that elusive happy ending for himself, is definitely progress.

    I loved this film.

of course this would win, wouldn't it? throw in some "trapping" POCs from the ghetto, mix it with some unhappy queer melodrama, a junkie mom, fancy colours and rewinded scenes. to think that a highly innovative musical drama with a very important message and complex characters portrayed by the talented Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone lost to this. YAWN

What a relief. I honestly thought the La La Land gas lighting had taken a sinister turn then.

I found it very unlikely that older Chiron hadn't had any physical contact with anyone in 10 years, looking like THAT. As if. Give the Oscar back.

There were a few really great moments, but as an entire film, I found it really dragged.
