    Now, this is potentially grim....

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-48253358

ITV has suspended The Jeremy Kyle show after a guest died shortly after filming, and is conducting a review into the episode "given the seriousness of this event".

The participant from the episode died a week after recording it.

ITV said everyone at the show is "shocked and saddened" and "thoughts are with the family and friends".

It will not screen the episode and said both filming and broadcasting were suspended with "immediate effect".

I am surprised it took this long for something like this to happen. The majority of people who appear on the show are clearly using the fee (do they get a fee?) for their next fix. A lot also seem to have serious mental health issues which in turn are used to mock them. DISGUSTING SHOW.

It pretty much has to be a murder or a suicide for them to pull the entire programme from the schedules which is absolutely horrific.

One of my ex clients went on the show a few years back. For all the baiting that goes on in front of the camera, what happens off camera is way worse.

I mean I know that's entirely predictable, but it really is utterly horrific.

How the ITV statement can say they are shocked when the only truly shocking thing is that it hasn't happened before now is disingenuous in the extreme. Grim.

Didn’t something like this happen on Jerry Springer about 20 years ago?

Shame on everyone involved with this horrific show

I don’t think they get a fee - just get put up in a hotel and given a driver for a day.

So apparently a guy killed himself after failing a lie detector test to prove he wasn’t cheating.

I really am surprised this hasn’t happened before.

The lie detector is treated like a smoking gun by this show, but they're known to be wildly inaccurate. God knows how many other people have been fucked over by it in the last decade.

I think this is more of a convenience for ITV than anything else. I bet they’ve been gagging to get rid of it for years.

Very different shows, but the Love Island death count is higher after much less time. No sign of them axing that though...

I do feel the cries to get rid of the show have come from a place of prejudice. I know it's manipulative, but it's an opportunity for some of the most ignored or mocked members of society to see their peers on TV.

That Love Island is still going after two deaths kinda says it all.

Surely they need to do copious mental assessments a la Big brother before they enter Love Island, no? Jeremy Kyle seemed to seek people who are already hitting rock bottom.

The problem with Love Island, which you know I am HUGE fan of, is the velocity at which people are propelled into fame, and then back out again. While I'm sure one or two of them apply from a good place, I can't help but feel the whole show is based on peoples insecurity, fulled by the fake online lives they see others lead. Love Island offers them a clutch at that fame, for it to burn out as quickly as it came for nearly all the contestants.

They are no doubt promised big things and have their egos inflated before and during the show, only to have them crushed by the apparent mediocrity they so desperately tried to escape, with no to little after care. That must take a huge toll on an already fragile, IMO, mental state.

I think with Big Brother, at least in the early days when it was good, you had a wide range of society and personality in there, so if you saw another contestant do well post show, you could always attribute that to a personality trait, skill or ability, but when youre faced with a house full of carbon copy vacuous twats like your self, you can't help but think 'why am I the one not making it'

Oh I do get that. What I was more meaning was the fact that vigorous psychological tests will cover Love Island’s arse in a way that will never happen with guests of Jeremy Kyle.

There's more in this than there seems at first look. Not seeing yourself within the culture is fundamentally deleterious to one's sense of self; many Moopists have experienced this from multiple viewpoints. That the only way some people could see themselves represented is though a programme like this is problematic enough, getting rid of it so quickly feels oddly kneejerk considering, as several have said, Love Island is at no risk.

There was someone on the news claiming that JK guests ARE assessed by a psychologist "both before and after". Fuck knows what sort of cowboy quacks they were using though.

Its alien to all of us, but for some groups of British society you get the sense it's the show for them to air their shit. I get the science side of it is pure quackery, but for some it's an outlet. Thousands and thousands of people are used the show as such, which should say something. There's a real class snobbery around the show. It's chav baiting all over again.

The woman I saw on the BBC said something along the lines of TV producers not knowing the difference between a Psychologist, Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist, so they often take the incorrect avenues to tick a few boxes.

The Love Island stuff has all been distant enough in time for ITV to wash their hands of it. This was literally days after...

Not to exonerate them for Love Island, but that feels more passive - more like negligence. JK is more actively abusive.

The Love Island ones were possibly more to do with long term aftercare for people being thrust into the spotlight, willingly most of the time (we’re certainly far past the first few series of Big Brother).

It’s the media at large that should be partly responsible for that rather than just ITV.

Sure. But in terms of brand identity for ITV, you can bet there’ll be a fair few people happy to see the back of it. And they’d have had little cause to get rid of it otherwise.

The powers that be can do what they like- and you can bet that advertising revenue was far more important than brand identity, particularly when you consider the rest of the SHITE ITV put out...

Can’t they just get some random repeats of classic shows? I heard that the C4 repeats of Frasier early in the mornings get more viewers than the live breakfast news shows. Maybe it’s different for the late morning time slot.

2 people did take their own lives, but it happened 18 months - 2 years after appearing on the show. The blame can not directly lie with ITV. Sophie’s partner also took his own life days after her, do ITV get the blame for that too through association?
