My favourite Christmas present of the year so far has been the gift of Naomi's MAGNUM 1994 OPUS 'Babywoman'.

I haven't listened yet, but Love & Tears really is a GEM. A hilariously ill-sung gem, but nevertheless... :D

"You used to open your heart
And tell secrets you DOOOON'T *croak* tell NO OTHER
You knew that I'd keep them INSIIIIIIIIDE *veers dangerously off-key*
Now all I get are your LIES and your PROMISES
    THERE'S just no OTHER
You NEVER had a LOVER *gasps*
    Besides meeeeee
You PLAYED ME FOR A FOOOOOL! *wheels fall off the vocal wagon entirely*

It's AMAZING. I genuinely love it and it gets a LORRA LORRA plays chez moi.

The album must have cost a fortune. Scanning through those credits it really was a who's who of credible pop production circa 1994. I remember thinking it would be HUGE... :D

I'm such a SUCKER for some TWIDDLY EASTERN STYLINGS :D

    SITAR UP

The early low bits work quite nicely... it's when she really starts working that upper register in the second verse that the FUN truly STARTS though

The EFFORT that must have gone into coaxing her performances on that album!

    Do a line/sing a line/do a line/sing a line...

I'm kind of annoyed that I didn't think ahead back when it was in the bargain bins in Woolies for £2.

Question no longer Sue - you're in for a TREAT

Discogs tells me that Chrissie Hynde sings backing vocals on "Love & Tears". Now I don't have my CD to hand, but even if I did I wouldn't check the credits - I just want to believe it's TRUE.

    FABULOUS

I wonder if Naomi lent Chrissie a MINK WRAP in case it got chilly in the recording booth :D

    My goodness!

I love the chart position story of that. Forget which number, but think it was 784 or something. Worse than LA State Of Mind!

And what are you doing opening Xmas presents early?

Look closely and you might just see CHARLES TAYLOR in that video.

Hot track, way better than I expected it to be. Must have been a bugger to record though, given THOSE vocals and THAT attitude.

The album starts fun, but the second half is unbearable TLC by way of Geri Halliwell mid 90s RnB sludge.

Her cover of Sunshine On A Rainy Day is hilarious though :D

i'm not quite sure how i went to this (i might have gone off on a tangent thanks to rupaul) but it's been a while and i have to say time has been kind. for some reason the album has been lost to me but i must reinvestigate. i quite loved i want to live although good old naomi truly opened pandora's vox for that one

I need this album. I Want To Live is divine, but the Grace version is a cover too.

When I look into your sad blue eyes
They whisper love's been and gone
It's the end of the line, we're waisting our time
    I kiss you goodbye

Maybe there'll be a 20 year anniversary re-issue next year, with Swan made available for kindle and other electronic reading equipment.

I don't think I ever need to hear her version of Sunshine On A Rainy Day again.

It's on Spotify in case anyone fancied the studio version.

I always had a sense that it only just made the top 40 enabling it a TOTP performance, that it was rigged somehow. Yet is still dropped out after 1 week regardless!!

In fact the whole album is available to stream, if anyone fancies a nasty hour.

Or maybe for MOOPY ALBUM CLUB :)

I just changed the album Wikipedia entry 5 minutes ago as it said it got to #75. It didn't- it charted at something like #900 after selling 100 copies :D

No, the single was #40. No idea about the album. It was one of those infamous low sellers.

Shame that Russian billionaire she was with a few years ago didn't fund her a follow up, it's been too long.
