I can't take any more right now. 1987 was really quite shit. At least to start with.

I’m agog at the talent on Ferry Aid

    Keren Woodward solo!
    Brexit’s Su Pollard!
    Anne Diamond!
    Nasty Nick Cotton!
    Linda Lusardi minge!

Bigger than Band Aid and Race For Life COMBINED!

Once again, an episode was skipped. This time between what we saw last night, on Thursday (19/03/87) and tonight, on Friday (02/04/87). It's no surprise who was hosting...

Herb Alpert - WTF? I thought he was very much left in the 1960s.

'Twas a brief comeback. Ultimately, if the co-founder of A&M records, a really huge label at the time, says he's going to make another album, you'd better believe that marketing team are going to pull their fingers out of their arses and go all out.

To be fair up to a point it was quite a decent line up, Kate Bush, Boy George, Andy Bell etc... But then SCREAMING LORD SUCH, CARMEN from BREAD, MANDY SMITH and GLORIA HUNIFORD,

In fairness, Bob Geldof padded Band Aid by asking some large bands - UB40 and Kool And The Gang had about 20 members between them...

And another Smith edition. This time from 09/04/87 featuring such delights as:

The Rainmakers – “Let My People Go-Go” (28)
Club Nouveau – “Lean On Me” (6) (video)
The Blow Monkeys – “Out With Her” (30)
Judy Boucher – “Can’t Be With You Tonight” (14)
Living In A Box – “Living In A Box” (23) (breaker)
Bon Jovi – “Wanted Dead Or Alive” (17) (breaker)
Terence Trent D’Arby – “If You Let Me Stay” (7)
Ferry Aid – “Let It Be” (1) (video)
Whitesnake – “Still Of The Night” (22) (video/credits)

    https://goo.gl/KyXzus

Apologies for the awful "test transmition" beeping at the start (and the same for the one I posted yesterday) but it seems the person who uploads them has access to the BBC Archive system (hence the awful BBC Archive logo on the top left of the screen). A better version does get posted by former Dotmusic poster Acer Ben but his seems to miss out the intro for some reason.

It's good to be reminded of David Bowie being terrible.

I have no recollection of Rikki as a UK Eurovision entry. To be fair it was fairly contemporary, I assume he was terrible.

Let's not forget Herb was about to team up with A&M's all time cash cow JANET JACKSON for the ACTUALLY QUITE GOOD "Diamonds".

But other than that, he was GASH in 1987.

"Sheila Take A Bow" isn't even a particularly great Smiths song but sandwiched between DREARY OLD FIVE STAR and KIM WILDE AND FUCKING JUNIOR it feels like HIGH ART

I'll be honest, I have seriously struggled for the energy to do this year's TOTP - there are episodes that have now fallen off the iPlayer without me getting to them. I'll need to try and cram a couple in.

The Blow Monkeys's bass player was an odd cove - he moved like he was trying to hold in a gut-ending fart on a first date and looked like he carried a poison-tipped umbrella and wore an earpiece to keep touch with someone known simply as "Z".

Ah...The Smiths...almost sad to watch given what was to come..within 6 months, they would make another classic single, their best album and split.

And of course, Morrissey is a total cunt now too. But in that clip, double denimed, quiffed and wearing his own bloody merch, he was somehow the coolest man on Earth. And yet, probably unbeknownst even to them, they had already played their last gig.

    Yeah, actually sad to watch.

Cheered up by Peelie being his usual self doing the Top 40 rundown tho'. What a treasure.

Level 42 were a weird one...started as a cult jazz/funk outfit, all extended live jams and so on...had one hit, enjoyed the feeling and wrote another dozen or so. Strange trajectory. Largely shit as well. Hated Mark King and his bass style at the time, still do. (fun fact, the guitarist wrote most of the music and the drummer most of the words but the other two were always front and centre - no wonder that was the split that happened in the band)

"Stand By Me" is a classic mind you. Was that out of a Levi's ad or was it just the film?

(Awww River Phoenix on guitar :( )
