I read the first episode but it felt more like a Lifetime movie so I didn't bother with listening further.

Is anyone else struggling to get the hang of the iOS 11 changes to the podcast app?

Why do they have to change things so much?

I listened to them all and I'm not sure I've EVER come across a story which features so many utterly BAFFLING decisions

    Right?!
But as soon as the mother told her story it made sense why Debs would act like such a loon.

Oh absolutely. But I was screaming at the mum too :D

I've seen some debate about whether it's victim blaming to question their decisions which I understand but COME ON

I’ve been sniffing back around the Adam Buxton podcast which is more often than not alright, but I miss Joe and always found him the more likeable one. He needs someone to bounce off of, but sometimes the chemistry isn’t right.

Also love The Allusionist, the host is great

I needed some new ones, Freakonomics is really wearing out it’s welcome. I never liked the host, he’s always smug.

Adverts are one thing (that they also do) but they are always shaking the can for donations. I mean it’s a free podcast so of course in principle it’s all good, but they have a lot of rebroadcasts and keep foisting episodes of their smug panel game on me. If they needed the money so much, why start a whole new podcast with the same host on top of that?

I really want to get into 99% invisible, but (at least the earlier) episodes are 5 minutes including a few minutes of commercials. It’s too much of a ball ache to listen to, especially on the move. Plus the Podcast app doesn’t seem to allow me to play from oldest to newest automatically

I very much dip in and out of 99% Invisible. It's on my app feed, but I'll check what each episode is about before I decide to listen or not.

99% Invisible has some nice and interesting episodes, but not all of them are interesting and that's why I never subscribed to it or listened to it religiously.
As for Freakonomics, I do some pick'n'mix between this and NPR Planet Money

Also, StartUp is excellent. I binged on the first 2 seasons and it's really good (and there's going to be a TV series starring Zach Braff based on this podcast).

The worst thing is that the new Podcasts app doesn’t really tell the difference between things you’ve ever listened to and things you’re subscribed to.

You're right. I still have no idea how it works. Confusing doesn't even come to describe it. I don't know who was the bright spark that saw the app design and approved it. It's shit.

More shameless self promo, but my show Beyond The Box Set is currently featured on the iTunes Front Page under ’Binge Worthy Podcasts’ and we’re up to #51 on the TV and Film charts. I’m not ashamed to go full Lisa Scott-Lee to crack the top 40 so if anyone fancied downloading an ep or two, now would be a *great* time.

Nope, it's available on iTunes, Stitcher, aCast, Overcast, Podbean, Pocket Casts, Player FM and I think a few more apps.

We've submitted to Spotify and Google Play but they're still in the early stages of adopting Podcasts in the UK, especially independent ones.

Only major platform we're not on to my knowledge is Soundcloud, because you need to host your show through them and rumour has it they're on their last legs so we decided against it.

I've been listening this morning to the two parter end of year episodes, it's quite good although early on it was all sexed up versions of oscar movies.

Yeah the Oscar movies were a fucking nightmare to imagine sequels for. We might mix it up a bit next year so they’re not all loaded at the front.

Well done, VoR. How easy is it to monetise this enterprise? I don't believe there's that much cash in it, when you look at how some of the really big podcasts operate, but have you looked into making money out of it?

I get the impression it's often a way of creating a profile and getting exposure that can be used as a stepping stone, rather than as a career in itself.

The more traditional way seems to do a patreon.

Yeah, if the numbers keep going up we could look at advertising, but I don't know how much real return you get on that relative to how intrusive they are to the show.

Patreon might be more feasible, but I'd like for us to keep building our following for a little longer before we start asking people for money.

Really it's just a thing we do for fun, and it's kind of amazing to me that anyone gives a shit but we'll ride it out and see where it takes us. I guess one thing with the boosted profile is that it'll hopefully help us to attract more high-profile guests. We've already gone from basically getting our mates on to booking a few other podcasters, and we've done a couple of interviews too. So I guess we'll just keep pushing it!

The boost pretty much seems to have come from the iTunes front page feature anyway, so it may well be a temporary spike, though hopefully we'll see at least a little bit of a long-term benefit from it.

OK, I promise this is the last bit of Podcast flogging for a while from me, but if anyone's interested we've just been added to Spotify.

They're quite new to carrying Podcasts and are only accepting selected shows, so it's a really nice bit of validation. Plus I imagine it might be easier for many people to listen to us there who don't necessarily use iTunes or dedicated Podcast apps these days.

I’ve been listening to the extensive archive of Throwing Shade since January, got through 100 episodes and suddenly most of them are now only available on Stitcher Premium. NO THANKS

I'm at a loss. I've listened to all the How Stuff Works episodes that appeal to me, I've dismantled my wrestling ones and the only Drag Race Recap episodes I haven't heard are the patreon spoiler ones. I'm also out of Audible credits for the month. All I have left is Lost Geographer and it's not really bedtime listening.

Podcast recommendations? Realising I need them to sleep.

If you want to sleep, I often use In Our Time. Last night Melvyn Bragg and his experts were talking about Fungi. I think it’ll take me a few months to get to the end
