I always get the sense she could have an absolute smash hit waiting around the corner. She was never the sexy young pop star in the same others were, so continuing to have hits 20 years into her career isn't a huge shock in retrospect.

Even if P!nk never has another hit single again (which is very possible), I think she's got herself to a stage now where she could tour arenas and flog albums for the rest of her life. She's fine.

This is also true. The fact that she's never been trendy is kind of to her benefit at this stage in her career. She can't ever fall out of fashion because, possibly excluding a brief period around the Missundaztood era, she's never been IN fashion.

Yes, I’m not overly a fan but would definitely go and see Pink, I’ve enjoyed her gigs in the past. She’s so established now and garnered such a good live rep that she’ll have no problem filling gigs as long as she wants to if she’s chucking in plenty of her back catalogue. I agree also that I think she could have another big hit down the line.

I hate to compare female pop stars (I love it), but I wonder if Beyonce will ever have a hit again. She seems rather absent of late, despite releasing some music.

Beyoncé would have a hit if she released a song with a tune

I feel like Beyonce exists more as a CONCEPT than as an actual pop player these days.

Her albums will always gain interest and like P!nk, she could never release a note of new music and still tour forever. But I'm sure she'll deign to have another global chart topper at some point in the next few years.

Yes, I agree. With Beyonce it's purely a case of if she wants to release something with commercial appeal. Radio and streaming will be all over it if she does.

The Lemonade numbers in Spotify are strong, considering by that point everyone will have got the album by other means. When she wants to be a pop star again the world will stan.

Yes, I adore “Unabbreviated Love”. It would have made a nice uptempo third single had it been on the album. I also wouldn’t have minded a sensual visual and Shep Pettibone remix for “Primitive” :disco:

ALL very fair points re. Pink, she's obviously just dropped off my personal radar :D

Although I love this more than most, not sure what else they would have gone with on the album. Possibly “For Your Eyes Only” had it materialized as the Bond single as intended. Or “Danceaway” :disco:

To be fair she had one of the biggest hits here in 2017 with “Just Like Fire”. “What about Us” was also top ten at radio and hung around forever. I think she just wasn’t wise about releasing the title track next or any of the singles off the subsequent album. “Whatever You Want” was the best option off Beautiful Trauma but they tossed that out at the end of the campaign with a live montage video and no fanfare.

Sorry - had to at least add something to this dismal array of pop floppage.

Utterly baffling decision to release this limp cover on an old Searchers song instead of "Bill Is Dead", a song that had already garnered not just praise but airplay which was unprecedented for an album track (they had enough trouble getting their singles on the radio). Self-sabotage? Very probably.

(fun fact - has Mike Edwards from Jesus Jones on guitar)

Now - I love this track but it was a duff choice as a single and damn near killed them. I mean, for a start, rehabilitating Richard Nixon was a hell of a move even for the Manics but coming back with what was essentially a synth pop track(they looked ridiculous miming it on TOTP) confused both fans and casuals and the album "Lifeblood" duly stiffed at No. 13. They got another hit out of "Empty Souls" based on multiformatted fan power but if they'd opened the campaign with that, it would have been a different story. After just two singles, Sony pulled the plug on the project.

Flying high from the million-selling success of "The Best Of", the world was there for the taking. So James issued this weird, jerky, synth-led banger that went down like a knackered lift with both radio and their fans. And indeed, some of the group. Not everyone turned up for the video shoot. They should have opened the campaign with the sublime "Just Like Fred Astaire" but by then they'd shot themselves in the foot and the in-fighting began again and it wasn't long before they split. For about 5 years. Then they reformed and they're still brilliant.

Mariah's version of Open Arms was completely forgettable, but that was the sound that the UK wanted from her at the time. Her British audience abandoned her as soon as she veered into R&B. So, no, not a bad single choice at that moment in time.

If U Seek Amy was a good choice in the sense that it was at least controversial and got Fox News talking. There was no narrative beyond the initial comeback, and I can't say that Circus had that many smashes on it.

Loverboy - I mean, were there any other singles on Glitter that would have been better choices? Same for American Life.

As for Beyoncé, the day she / Destiny's Child release a BOP for white gays, it will be #1 for weeks.

I don't dislike it but it wouldn't make my James top 20. Or my Top 50, probably. But it was a poor single choice.

I had a bit of James youtube binge not too long ago. I'm absolutely not familiar with them beyond radio and music channel exposure from the 90s, so it was much to my delight hearing about 6 in a row I really liked (including some obvious ones of course).

That's an almost absurdly shit video. And is that Paddy blacked-up at the back? Oh dear me.

I’m unaware of this but I’m sure they reimagined the song in a very emotional way.

Not that the album abounded with potential hits, but I never understood this being the lead single from Equally Cursed & Blessed.

Just been reading up on the album's singles and apparently Londinium "did not pick up a great deal of airplay amid fears that it contained inflammatory lyrics about London" :D
