I know it was posted in the A Star Is Born thread, but surely it merits its own discussion given it's clearly going to be a massive hit?

It's really come to something when I'm the one posting positive threads about Gaga. :D But I must admit I think this is easily the best thing she's done since the Monster era, even if it does carry the pungent whiff of real music about it.

    iTunes: #1 USA, #3 UK
    Spotify: #58 USA, #37 UK

It's worth noting that on Spotify there are about 20 Lil Wayne songs ahead of her, due to a new album release.

As I said in the other thread it’s a nice song but the yelling is really jarring. It just comes out of nowhere. It feels more natural coming in at the end, but the first part just kills the song stone dead.

But the yelling is the best part, I was disappointed it’s not the chorus.

Also the opening reminds of Somewhere Only We Know.

Yeah, normally when she goes into that affected 'Ra Ra Ro-Ma-Ma' part of her vocal range I roll my eyes, but it really works for me on this one.

It's SO good you guys. The only thing I have a problem with is the crowd noises.

I really like it - as someone said in the other topic, this is the sort of thing the Joanne album SHOULD have been about.

Yeah, it's properly really good. And the 'shouting' feels far more natural than when she employs it in a lot of her more overtly pop stuff.

This song is GREAT, and I think they both sound really good on it. I also can not wait to go and watch the film as I adore the original.

The 1976 release with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson of course. MAGICAL.

I haven’t seen that one or the Judy one. I have them both lined up for a double feature this weekend. :disco:

She came across well on Graham Norton. I say well, I probably just mean NORMAL.

The Judy Garland Star Is Born is essential. She was 100% robbed of that Oscar.

The Streisand one is actively terrible, but quite entertaining as a monument to sheer ego.

The true original 1937 version with Janet Gaynor is actually the one I’ve seen talked up the most, but I’ve only seen Garland and Gags.

Wow, Gaga finally gets another proper hit. Is it looking likely to go top 10 overall in the UK?

It's kind of sobering to realise it's been almost a decade since her last UK #1.

I mean not so much when you take into account the quality of the material since Monster, but still...

It's entirely ridiculous. I still think of her as a current megastar...

This whole "x years since her last number one!" thing that gets trotted out all the time for Gaga and other clearly enormous pop acts is so stupid. A number one single is not even close to being the ultimate indicator of relevance or superstardom. Beyoncè didn't have a number one from 2008 to 2017 (and even then only by jumping onto an Ed Sheeran remix) - I wouldn't exactly describe that as "sobering" because she is a superstar and number ones don't mean shit.

The only period in which Gaga was on shaky ground was 2013-16. She very much is a current megastar and not just because of A Star Is Born.

Are you really suggesting her career from 2013 to now has been comparable to Beyoncé's?

This revisionist history that Joanne was a huge comeback success is really quite the stretch. The Superbowl was a big moment for her, inarguably, but none of the singles did much. Perfect Illusion, lest we forget, was a complete and utter disaster. Million Reasons saved some face, but it hardly put her back on her pre-Artpop pedestal.

Are Little Monsters like Tinkerbell or something? Do they die every time somebody doesn’t believe in Gaga?

This really does have a legit chance of going to #1.

    #1 on iTunes
    #8 on Spotify

It was #1 on sales last week, but streaming #13 held it back. So hopefully it will climb now. Everything feels so arbitrary with the charts now though, with it depending on how other songs are combining, or if they have triggered the higher streaming ratio. Midweek #5.

Clearly going to be her biggest hit in years, though.

The business where a song moves from 150 streams = 1 sale to 300 if it's has been out over a certain period (9 weeks?) and has declining sales over whatever the limit is. Or 300 and 600 if it's free Spotify.

Or is it 200 and 400 for free Spotify? And then there's YouTube video streaming.

It almost makes me long for the days when record shops just made this shit up.

Radio 1 appear to be snubbing this. It's not on their playlist yet. There's even a Lily Allen record on the R1 playlist, and I'd have assumed she'd been long since relegated to Radio 2.
