As VoR's countdown comes to a dramatic conclusion, it's time to re-assess this cinematic tour-de-force

One of the few films (or 'fillums' as my Irish mother calls them) that I can watch over and over again.

Victoria is just AMAZE in it.

I must have watched at least ten times. It's very much of its time but it was one crazy ass movie.

My adoration of this film is my rubbishgai high waterpoint. It's utter shit but concurrently one of the best films ever, the lines are quotational gold. They were on the roof. The ROOF.

In fact, brief hysteria appears to have taken over so much that I have clicked every poll option.

I've not seen it since the day I saw it, although I enjoyed it very much. I really don't feel I have a CLUE on how I should rate it, as I remember very little.

And like I've said before, the day I saw it was the day I met Mr L. He was not impressed at all :(

We say fillums in Scotland too, and Cumbria I think. Victoria is amazing in it, I don't think she had to act much though :D

Is it just me or is there literally a threadbare storyline? It makes me love the film that much more

In fact that scene would be played out a decade later with Mel B asking Vicky if she could wear HER dress, with VB's response MUCH THE SAME :disco:

Saw it for the first and last time 15 years ago in the cinema. Like Lolly can't remember it well enough to give an informed rating. Though I did have a ball watching that VB montage video. My favourite quote is probably "Hold on to your knickers, girls!" :D

I saw it at the cinema when I was at uni the atmosphere was great everyone was dancing around at the end .

Of course no one had the moves like those extras in The Albert Hall dancing during SUYL waving their arms with No enthusiasm

Like Geri herself, any criticism you can throw up at it doesn't take away from the fact that it's amazing, and probably adds to it.

I was friends with a cinema manager back in 1997 and the cinemas really didn't anticipate just how busy it was going to be. After Boxing Day they had to move one of the screenings to the biggest cinema in the multiplex.

We watched it a few Sunday's back for a nostalgia trip. Back in '98 I loved it because 'OMG Spice Girls, so funny' etc, but now it really does have a WHOLE other level. It is so shit, beyond belief, but it totally works. VB, as has been said, is truly golden. Her 'Hellllllp' scream before the aforementioned DRY CLEAN comment is just so :disco:

The boat scene really is the ULTIMATE. Vicky's army training was amazing too.

I also love the "it's expensive" followed by the shot of the toy bus jumping over Tower Bridge! :D

The bus scene FLOORS ME every time. "Bloody Sunday drivers... it's only Saturday." :disco:

And the flagrant disgregard for London's geography is quite something. Buckingham Palace to the Royal Albert Hall VIA TOWER BRIDGE. VB clearly didn't have her TFL route planner!

There's a bit in the Sinclair book about the filming. Apparently early in the shoot, Victoria approached the director and said "I'm the laughing stock in this film, aren't I?"

He replied that yes, she was, to which she said "OK fine. Just so I know" and proceeded to throw herself into all of her humiliating scenes with EXTRA GUSTO. :disco:

I haven't actually seen this in about FIVE years despite owning the DVD. Will need to rewatch it soon. It is FABULOUS, but SHIT at the same time, rather like Showgirls.

yet people still say she doesn't have a sense of humour

I mean she might a be a stuck up bitch nowadays but I mean, if you were trying to fit in ANNA WINTOUR'S ELITE circle of friends you would be a cold bitch but I'm sure you'd still have a bit of silly moments behind closed doors.

If I convince myself she's just trolling the world with her cardboard cut-out poses and her perma-pout I like her a lot more.

Does this get shown on TV at all? I don't remember seeing it listed for ages, although I guess I have never specifically been looking out for it. I'd quite like to give it a go on a weekend morning, though.

No, never. If I remember, the ownership rights to it are quite complicated, due to Fuller's endlessly inventive financing schemes (see also: BLOND AMBITION :zombie: )

5 different commentaries from each of the girls on a re-release DVD wouldn't go amiss.

Can someone remind me of Gary Glitter's influence on this? Did they have to cut his scenes out due to his noncing or was that for the dvd release?

They'd filmed Leader of the Gang with him and shortly after the news about him broke so they re-filmed it as far as I know. The re-shot footage was used in the cinema release

It was very hastily re-cut before the cinema release. 'Do You Wanna Be In My Gang' was originally a duet, I do believe.

Of course, he still gets songwriting royalties from the song's use.
