Less popular and less successful than WOB (although more popular and successful than any other album they've ever made apart from WOB) I utterly love this.

This is where they dropped the guitars momentarily and took the motown/pop/R&B sensibilities of their previous stuff and went all out with it.

Completely suited her voice and was perfect summer pop for the year it was released

Didn't their longtime drummer quit because the album was practically produced on a drum machine in a studio?

Anyway, they key to this album is some amazingly subtle motown album tracks... "Sunday Afternoon" is just glorious and "Day After Day" is practically Diana Ross:

    09 In Our Lifetime
    05 Tell Me The Answer
    09 Summer Son
    10 Sunday Afternoon
    09 Move In
    10 When We Are Together
    09 Day After Day
    08 Zero Zero
    09 Saint
    06 Girl
    07 The Hush
06 The Day Before I Went Away / Let Us Be Thankful

I always forget how good this album is, it really is a perfect summer album.

    10 In Our Lifetime
    05 Tell Me The Answer
    10 Summer Son
    09 Sunday Afternoon
    07 Move In
    10 When We Are Together
    09 Day After Day
    08 Zero Zero
    10 Saint
    05 Girl
    10 The Hush
08 The Day Before I Went Away / Let Us Be Thankful

I'm really not a fan of the high pitched vocals on "Tell Me The Answer".
Most of "Summer Son" was written in the WoB era fact fans but they were missing lyrics for the chorus so it was finished it off for this album.
I wish they'd done a little more with "Zero Zero" it's got great potential.

Zero Zero is AMAZING. I remember one reviewer saying it had the potential to be the best song on the album, it just needed a verse and a chorus to go with the music...

They did at least use it as their intro on tour, so not a complete waste of time.

What's with all the Texas love? It's all very 40-something dinner table music for Moopy, isn't it?

Oh i've seen footage it does work rather well. Such a shame I didn't see them until the "Red Book" tour. It would have been great to see them at their peak.

As far as easy listening dad music goes, it doesn't get ANY BETTER THAN TEXAS

Plus she's amazing live. What a voice. You should like her Ellie, she's so :black: vocally

this is, rather randomly, one of my favourite albums of all time

from the golden era of pop music (1999) it was probably my 3rd most listened to album of the year, after FanMail and My Love Is Your Love

this has held up better though for SOME REASON

After edging it for 3 albums, Texas goes full on Motown. Spectacularly.

    Total summer album too.

    10/10

I love this album. It's one of those that I don't play as much as I should.

    "Summer Son" is LIFE ITSELF

what's great about this album is that I never listened to the second half for YEARS and only about 3 years ago I had a moment with "Saint" and now I absolutely love love love it.

Even the fucking INTERLUDE is AMAZING

Summer Son is one of the best songs of the 90s. it sounds utterly DIVINE under a burning hot sun in the middle of a European heatwave :disco:

The only thing I like about Summer Son is it sounds a bit like Diva. Say What You Want is about all I can stomach of Texas. Maybe Put Your Arms Around Me and In Demand if I'm feeling sympathetic but on the whole FUCK OFF.

Texas really were utterly FOUL :zombie:

I always got the impression that Sharleen knew she'd been lucky as hell to get to where she got on a her diet of Americana and Motown "pastiches" (i.e. STEALS)

I refer you to my post above. That's why Red Book is probably my favourite Texas album. Xenomania collaborations were fantastique. Parts of it sounded like (and I quote someone from Moopy) 'Erasure with a female singer'. :disco:

This was a good album, and Summer Son is amazing, but their best is 'In Demand' if you ask me

Red Book was interesting as it was Texas trying to be more slick and polished, chasing hits - loved the production on that but it felt nowhere near their peak of WOB and TH
