Good morning all :) I'm helping count ballot papers tonight/tomorrow morning, and I'm starting to think my plan of getting two hours of sleep after work might be slightly flawed :eyes:

The London Mayoral election is leaving me cold. I think I hate all of the candidates. If I go, I really just want to have a rant on the ballot and spoil it. They're ALL awful.

I'm not sure I even know who the current Mayor IS. Is it still Boris?

I've had a quick look at the candidates and am not keen on any of their faces. Might vote Zylinski for the Z

Oh FFS! At least give it to Sophie Walker for WE party then!

(And Sadiq Khan second choice so we have a hope of not getting COLOSSAL FUCKWIT Zac elected!)

I'd never vote for Khan. He pretty much wants to cut all of the TfL project funding. I know it's selfish, but it's really going to affect me.

Sophie Walker wouldn't have much impact on my end since our public sector already has so called "flexible working", which in my 8 years at TfL just means loads of paid time off for mothers and everyone else has to do their work for them

Isn't that was the WE party is about too? As long as women are OK. The only stuff that makes sense on the policies are pretty much basic human rights which is common sense. The rest is pandering to parents.

All that "flexible working" has pretty much screwed the female non-parents at my workplace, including one who wanted to have adjusted hours to seek some much needed weekly counselling and mental health treatment, but because the rest of her team were parents she had her request quickly declined.

I'm also sick of the gender pay gap being talked about. It's bloody obvious. More women choose to give up their careers for children so fewer women climb up the corporate ladder. There are few and far between that manage to do both. It's not that women and men working the same jobs are paid differently.

I think there probably is a gender pay gap, but that's just a feeling and it's impossible to measure.

I've been in my team for longer than anyone else, and pay reviews are based on performance. My performance has been pretty good for a long period of time, so I hope I get paid more than anyone else, man or woman, in my team at my grade. There shouldn't be equality there.

But maybe my performance has been rated better because I am a man and my bosses are gender biased? I don't know.

Either way, pure averages are not the correct way to find out the answer.

Also in my company they've implemented a measure whereby a women must be included at interview stage for senior roles. So if there are 50 males and 1 female applicant, the female must be included.

    I think that's dreadful. I'd prefer a system of non-disclosure of gender.

That's true. We also have performance based pay and I have reached a higher salary than colleagues that have been here longer, but I've also reached the limit as we are public sector and I'm now at the top of the scale. My salary is frozen until I go for a promotion.

On the other hand as public sector, we have people who have been here for decades and are on completely different contracts that started with the Met Police. We've got some proper wastes of space who do nothing and I know two people that are actually on double the salary than if they started now and way beyond their fair pay grades. They're very poorly managed in that team. By coincidence, they're all men.

I was reading up about this not long back. Apparently the pay gap doesn't exist because of evil patriarchy, but because men are more likely to negotiate for a better salary than women. In lower-level jobs, male/female rates of pay are exactly the same.

The workings behind the pay gap issue are really flawed to begin with and don't take into account things like women being more likely to take part time hours, give up work for their children or take less demanding jobs because they're not the primary breadwinner.

That's also a steaming pile of BULLSHIT. So if the woman's application is a load of shit and she sounds like a liability, she'll still get an interview if she's the only woman who applied?

But why do women not feel able to ask for more money? Because the evil patriarchy has drummed it into them that they are worth less than men :Oi:
