It's not been a great year but I can just about scrape a top 10 together. In no particular order at the moment, except maybe the top 2. Will have a think and edit the order in DUE COURSE...

    3. Nakhane - You Will Not Die
    4. Suede - The Blue Hour
    5. Cat Power - Wanderer
    6. John Grant - Love Is Magic
    7. Christine & The Queens - Chris
    8. Mylene Farmer - Desobeissance
    9. Ezra Furman - Transangelic Exodus
    10. Django Django - Marble Skies

    Bubbling under:
    11. Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino
    12. Years & Years - Palo Santo
    13. Robyn - Honey (:bad: )

I think it has been a brilliant year but year-end charts seem particularly futile nowadays. I remember when Melody Maker picked the first Tindersticks album as their no 1 of the year (1993) and it got a visible sales boost but nothing like that happens now.

I remember seeing Nakhane on Jools Holland really liking it but then completely forgot until I've just seen your list. I'll check out the album now!

Lovely to see First Aid Kit at #1 - it's a beautiful record and is missing from a lot of the end of year lists (possibly because it came out in Jan and people have short memories!)

I can only think of five

    1. SOPHIE / Oil Of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides OBVIOUSLY :disco:
    2. Jon Hopkins / Singularity
    3. Abul Mogard / Above All Dreams
    4. Vril / Anima Mundi
    5. Various Artists / Pop Ambient 2019 - Yes I know this doesn’t really count but anyway. This thread reminds me that I must get that Mitski album so that’ll probably [EDIT: WON’T] replace this one

Honourable mentions to Beatrice Egli and Maite Kelly for keeping the Schlager flag flying but I’ve not actually got round to buying those two as yet. CDs a bit pricey on Amazon :oi:

Most of the albums (and many artists) mentioned in this thread are unknown to me. What have I become? I used to be about albums and now quick little singles are all I care about.:(

Oh dear me no. I mean I would if the CD comes in a cheap and flimsy cover, but not if deluxe versions are available with many beautiful pictures and heartwarming messages from the artist I’ll not even look at once :disco:

Not very sure about this Mitski album. Bit INDIE INNIT? At least the songs don’t last long :tongueout:

    :D

I always forget that @Phoenix lives in the West now and was almost certainly sky high on angel dust during those 231 plays. It’ll be The Kelly Family next :(

Actually I’ve gone straight for a second listen so it’s not THAT bad

i need to give the mitski album more spins and i feel bad for not properly investigating in kacey - high horse was lovely but i didn't really like her in the video so never checked further. but she was lovely on drag race and i see her all the lists so i'm probably missing out.

    I didn't do a chart because it's not a competition but I fart-tweeted a whole bunch of things I loved.

Sordid details following, cut and pasted from the original tweets:

Musically, 2018 has almost been too good to do a meaningful year-end but I'm going to highlight a few things anyway. Starting with my single favourite piece of 2018 - "Helix" by @kellymoran , the sound of a butterfly learning how to use its wings...

So many major discoveries this year but finding the music of rook (@rooksfeather ) was the most important, both as half of Black Dresses and on her own. An incredible songwriter and producer.

Also my privilege to hear the music of Cruel Diagonals (@cruel_diagonals ), Kali Malone, Chaines, Penance Stare (@penancestarexx ), She Makes War (@shemakeswar ), Lea Bertucci and Lucy Claire for the first time, all of whom knocked me sideways.

Let's Eat Grandma showed no signs of "difficult second album" with I'm All Ears, Neneh Cherry's "Broken Politics" was fresh and biting and Anna Calvi gave us a nailed-on classic with her incredible 3rd album "Hunter".

James delivered one of their best albums yet too, "Living In Extraordinary Times" - few others are so fertile this deep into a career

..and where to file this? Phonographer of the spirit(s), @BrianLavelle continues to pairs his music with visuals and text. Powerful stuff, in tune with an "other" most of us can neither absorb nor articulate.

A great year was had by Neil Campbell (@astralsocialite ) too - tough call between this and his "Spelk" collaboration with @sheepscar but this wins by a sliver, if only for the Herb Diamante tribute cover shot...(linked to "I Must Have My Manias")

Gwenno's "Le Kov" was a joy, as was Mitski's "Be A Cowboy", Guttersnipe's "My Mother The Vent" and Heather Leigh (@wishimage ) hitting sirenic transcendence with the astonishing "Throne"

2018 had some very dark spots for me. The one record that carried me through those more than any other was, of course, "Oil Of Every Pearl's Un-Insides" by SOPHIE. I owe her more than I can express.

Found myself absorbed in @Scanner's original "Mass Observation" all over again as well as by the previously unheard extended take. Shoutouts also to AJA, Polypores (@stephenjbuckley) , sadfem, Ill-Considered and Doctor Birch And His Young Friends (@TheFallinFives)

A favourite of mine for a couple of years now, UBOA (@Uboatheflesh) produced her best work to date in the atmosphere-ripping "The Sky May Be", in which she juxtaposes mournful chord patterns with intense, coruscating noise to extraordinary effect.

A seemingly endless source of delight came from @grahamdunning and his Fractal Meat imprint.

Who else? Kate Carr, Binker and Moses, Laurence Made Me Cry, Charli XCX, Andrew Liles and his frankly bonkers "Colossus" project, Camp Cope, Yuan Mekong, Cavern Of Anti-Matter...

...and of course, what would the summer have been without 8 hours of Autechre to digest? I've loved Ae for a full 25 years now and "NTS Sessions" was a brave, thrilling entry.

Oh, Chris Carter! "Chemistry Lessons Volume One" was excellent.

Just had a bath. Remembered "Qualm" by Helena Hauff and realised that the big missing piece was all the Bowie back catalogue I'd been devouring.

    Two days later:

Sons Of Kemet! THAT'S who I missed out. Doh! Just as well I'm not paid to remember stuff no wait I kind of am.
