The Official Top 150 Biggest Selling Singles Of the 21st Century revealed!

    08/05/2012

    By Dan Lane

As part of a special day of Bank Holiday programming, yesterday (Monday, May 7) BBC Radio 1 revealed the Official Top 150 Biggest Selling Singles Of the 21st Century.

The mammoth countdown kicked off at 7am with Reggie Yates, host of the Official Chart Show, and continued into Fearne Cotton and Scott Mills’ shows, leaving Official Update presenter Greg James to reveal the final Top 40.

Former Pop Idol contestant Will Young topped the chart with his debut release, Anything Is Possible / Evergreen, which has clocked up nearly 1.8 million sales to date. February of this year marked the 10th anniversary of the single's release and Young beating bookies favourite Gareth Gates to win the finale of the hit reality TV series.

“Ten years ago I won Pop Idol. Since then I have still not achieved my dream of a Tupperware range. Life can be cruel...” commented Young on his Twitter.

Adele, whose second album, 21, recently overtook sales of Michael Jackson’s Thriller to become the UK’s fifth biggest selling album of all-time, took second place with Someone Like You. The track, which was the second single to be lifted from 21, has sold a staggering 1,348,000 copies to date.

With 1,342,000 sales under its belt, Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates was in third place with his cover of Alex North, Hy Zaret and Todd Duncan’s 1955 hit Unchained Melody. The track was made famous by The Righteous Brothers some ten years later and became the theme song of 1990 film, Ghost. The Black Eyed Peas’ David Guetta-produced 2009 smash, I Gotta Feeling, was Number 4 in the countdown with sales of 1,289,000, while Shaggy’s 2001 former Number 1, It Wasn’t Me, completed the Top 5 with sales of 1,255,000.

Love that the big hits from the last few years are pushing the X-Factor winners' singles down the rankings

Cherly Cole should have a million seller by the year's end then - I'd have thought she could easily cobble together 8,000 sales of 'Fight For This Love' with a new album on the way...

Look at Moves Like Jagger go :disco:

Great to see 3 Rihanna tracks in the top 20 but Gotye is going to end up WAY too high on the list

Weird how X Factor feels so much bigger than Pop Idol ever was, and yet nothing has ever caught the public imagination like Will vs Gareth did.

Yes, I think it was primarily the fact that it was such a NEW thing (lest we forget that the public didn't actually CHOOSE Hear'Say).

But also the whole Will/Gareth pairing was fantastic - the only reality TV final to come close to matching it since is perhaps JLS vs. Alexandra Burke in terms of having two acts with quite different, but equally mainstream appeal and pitching them against one another

Ooh nice to have more recent figures for Hung Up, only 16k off Platinum now. I'm sure it'll reach it eventually (might be YEARS, but still), it does always feel odd that she's never had a platinum certified single in her career despite having so many big hits.

Not that it needs to be any higher but I presumed that Westlife's Uptown Girl was a million seller?

someone contacted the OCC about Fragma and the OCC replied that 'Toca's Miracle' is at #161.

Other positions they have given, this time with sales provided by the OCC:

    #161 Toca's Miracle (550k)
    #182 All I Want For Christmas (518k)
    #190 About You Now (512k)
    #198 Mr Brightside (495k)
    #222 Crazy In Love (467k)
#274 How You Remind Me (423k)
    #358 Robbie & Nicole - Something Stupid (371k)
    #376 Kasabian - Fire (362k)

#228 Oops I Did It Again
    #263 Womanizer
    #327 Toxic
#439 Born To Make You Happy
    #505 Everytime

    Girls Aloud
    #180 The Promise
    #485 Call The Shots
    #643 Something Kinda Ooooh

    Also:
    #171 Lady Marmalade
    #456 Christina Aguilera - Beautiful
    #1000 Rihanna - Rehab (184k)

'How You Remind Me' is listed at #274 with sales of 423,000 but these are its physical sales from 2002. The OCC have forgotten to add in its sales on download. In a rock chart countdown compiled by the OCC for Kerrang TV in May 2011 the track was shown as having sold 560,000 and still sells at least 500 copies a week so it's probably close to 600,000 now.

If Rihanna's Rehab is at #1000 she must have a heck of a lot of entries in the top 1,000

If I could be bothered, i'd tally up just how many of these are from just a last few years. It certainly seems like a disproportionate amount... single sales really are BOOMING.

I've just done a very quick count and 80 of the top 150 tracks were on the decade end chart of 2000 to 2009 which means that almost half of the tracks in the chart are either from the past two and a quarter years or sold most of their copies in this period.

I wonder if Adele will ever pass Will?

It's amazing, all things considered, that he's still up there.

I think she will. It will only take a high profile performance of it in a few years time. She's (probably) timeless, where as that track by Will I think was of it's time

Adele passing Will Young would mean she's on course to be in the top 10 biggest selling songs ever. It's odd to think that the top of the biggest selling songs ever list is now so fluid.

It Wasn't Me? Good god. I wonder if Janes Arthur will catch up to Alexandra and end up with the biggest selling single out of Xfactor.

I do believe she's the first (and so far only) Geordie to achieve this feat.

Do we have information about the best selling catalogue downloads... Obviously Journey are top of that list but a fuller insight would be splendid...
