Apparently I got it wrong last week - LadBaby's lead was such that he would have been Christmas #1 even without Mariah being subject to the ACR. So she would have been #1 the week before and after Christmas, but not the Christmas #1 itself.

    Either way, WORRALOADOFSHIT.

The US has a frankly bizarre rule where Christmas songs are allowed to chart in the Top 50, but not below that - so you either sell/stream enough to be inside the Top 50, or if you would have been #51 or below, you're excluded. How strange.

I'm not sure if it's a more level playing field for the ones that DO chart, as I long since stopped understanding how Billboard compiled their charts.

That rule applies to any old song, not just Christmas ones. Still a bit odd, but I guess it's a better way to prevent the singles chart full of old tracks every time someone dies, Christmas and so.

Yes, I assumed it would be all old songs. Presumably it only ever affects multiple songs at Christmas, though.

I find it an utterly bizarre rule though. It's like the worst of both worlds.

They always had rules like that. Any charts expert correct me if I'm wrong, but (at least) in the 90s a song was not allowed in the Hot 100 if it didn't make the Airplay Top 75, no matter how much it sold.

I thought they were excluded entirely if they were over a certain age, or was that just albums, hence the catalogue chart?

I don't know, they had some really weird rules that changed a lot, if you think the UK ones are unfair and odd, these are a lot worse. In 92 (I think) they introduced another rule, so any song with more than 20 weeks in the airplay chart that fell from the top 20 would dissapear from the chart, which means that would drop like a stone in the Hot 100. I understand they didn't want the same songs in the chart forever, but this is just another way to manipulate the charts.

The OCC have been so reactionary in recent years to changing the rules when they don’t like the chart, that I can almost guarantee there will be further change

It is ridiculous though that the rule change has prevented her from being number 1 in two separate weeks this year

But I guess Mariah has probably paid back whatever Caution cost and more for what this songs done this year alone

She must have added around 200k 'sales' to her total as well.

Wouldn’t Mariah have been number one with streaming “sales” that most likely wouldn’t have happened though, because of that bizarre estimation technique expecting plays that would have happened?

I don't have the time/enthusiasm to run it myself, but can we have a #1s of 2018 rate please? @Mugatu ?

I've got terrible online-induced writer's block at the moment, but if I can conquer the impulse to talk about Big Chungus in every post then I'll consider it.

Can we run this thread into the inevitable post-Christmas clearout please?

Should be particularly interesting this year.

Yes, I think let's carry on with this one this week, then start a new one next week.

Obviously there won't be the interest we had over Christmas, but I would perhaps like to try a weekly chart thread.

I reckon album sales will be so crap this week that you'll see the impact of HMVs sale down the bottom end of the sales chart.

I know there was a late night C4 documentary fairly recently but the Paul Heaton comp is surely there thanks to being a fiver and prominently shown in the HMV and Amazon sales.

And when will this The Greatest Showman madness end? The Christmas songs clear out, and out they pop.

It was on Sky 1 over Christmas so presumably that helped.

You have to wonder when it will end (not that it bothers me - I think the soundtrack is great). Hugh Jackman has his tour coming up so there’ll probably be some promotional performances. But unless they re-release it at the cinema, surely it’ll start to fade by mid-year.

I wonder whether any of the terrestrial channels will show it at Christmas this year. If they do, I could see it returning to #1 again.

Can we get this thread going again? I think most of us still have a mild interest in the charts. If someone is happy to post the info that would be great? I am happy to do it if someone could point me in the direction of where to find the midweek info?
