I really can't see him overcoming Ariana Grande's streaming. Plus her video was only released last week and breaking all sorts of records.

Do video plays count towards the charts too? As in YouTube or music channel plays?

Yes, since the end of June, 600 streams on a free video streaming service = 1 sale. If it's a paid for service, 100 streams = 1 sale.

I think that's only the official video though.

ugh think of a Maroon 5 sound alike song, and I remember there was a bit of a hoopla cause the chorus clearly borrowed the melody Rob Thomas' 2005 single Lonely No More single and he was later credited to it :D

That Ariana song has sweary words. We can't have a Xmas No 1 with sweary words, it'll upset the baby Jesus. :(

I'm enjoying all this chat about midweeks, it feels very 2000s :disco:

(Cue someone telling me we didn't have midweeks throughout the 2000s)

I am pleased The 1975 are doing well - the album has been on the release schedule for ages and none of the singles really seemed to have any impact.

Their best song is She’s American, btw.

It gets worse every year, but god album sales are dire (for December).

I saw Now! 101 opened with like 85k last week. The Xmas Now edition used to do about 300k each week for a solid month.

Was a lot of that not down to people buying CD’s as presents?

Yeah that's a big part but streaming is the main thing. Even in the download age of 2005-2016, they were still worth buying (on iTunes - £14 for 40 odd tracks that normally go for 99p; or a physical CD if that way inclined).

With streaming, you can simply make the playlist to match and listen for free (or amend to take out what you don't like etc). So it was inevitable, but the drop off since about the start of 2017 has been quite something.

Oh why has War of the worlds resurfaced again? I can’t imagine any anniversary editions have that much to offer?

Their Greatest Hits tracklist must be exactly the same like the 1995 one.

Isn't there some new rule now to weaken songs after they've been in the charts for too long - to reduce the amount of 10+week #1s?

If I'm not totally making that up, does anybody know when it kicks in for Ariana?

It's after 9 weeks, if sales have been in decline for 3 consecutive weeks, isn't it?

Checked the OCC and I think that's correct. Hence why Rita Ora fell 5-14 last week, and Gaga 4-24 in the midweeks this week, both on their 10th week in the chart.

Ariana is only on week 4 now, so that won't kick in until January for her, assuming it she is in decline in terms of sales then.

Makes it clear how stupid that rule is if things are suddenly dropping 4-24.

Live show is on tour. Sold out the enormo-dome in Glasgow last week and is doing the same in several other places.

Remember when the chart compilers got really cunty and we were having threads with titles like "WidMeeks" "Weeks Of Mid" and so on so as to minimise the chances of being caught out?

Now they're utterly desperate for anyone to give that much of a shit.

I guess people generally have fewer streaming opportunities during the week because work, college, school etc.

Yup - it was "copyright" and, indeed, "business sensitive". Now that no-one gives a blind fuck about their chart, they put it up themselves to try and spark a little interest, a bit like an 80's reunion band trying to get people to come back from the bar/lavvy by playing an actual hit.

Which most would be I’d say - so very good. The #1 on sales does about 10-15k in a week, so 5k in a day with not amazing streaming is good.
