The streaming ratio change may have denied Mariah at least two weeks at #1, but it hasn't really stopped Christmas songs dominating the chart, has it? And next week will be worse.

The OCC either need to admit defeat, or decide some sort of rule to exclude old songs entirely.

Can’t they just do what I always hated about the Billboard charts and have a separate one for catalogue albums/singles? It’s always embarrassing when the #1 on the Catalogue chart outsells the official Top 200.

I can't imagine anyone is pleased with how the Little Mix album is doing - wasn't Glory Days a million seller? For this one to be outside the top 10 at Christmas, with no hit second single, when it should be doing George Ezra numbers is surely a major disappointment

Less than 70k for the Christmas #1 album. Dreadful. I'm fairly sure it has never sold less than 100k before. And it wasn't that long ago that the majority of the Top 10 did.

no hits (except Dusk Till Dawn in 2017), random tracks thrown out every 2 weeks, none sticking, album put together purely to fulfil his contract, zero promo

It wasn't even close for number one in the end.

The UK still largely nonplussed then about Darlene Love's GREATEST FESTIVE NUMBER EVAH.

Is there a reason that no major acts release a new Christmas belter these days? If they wrote it themselves it would be a healthy pension fund forevermore. Ask Tony Mortimer.

Never mind that, look at Mumford and Sons...

Little Mix is an interesting one - where's the 2nd single? In fact, where's the promo at all? They seem to have released the album and then bogged off for Christmas...something to do with the label-hopping?

Or...has streaming made Christmas a BAD time to release a single for big artists now? Does the annual rush of all the old lags back into the charts make it a dead zone for current acts?

Interestingly Mariah doesn't seem to be falling on iTunes as Christmas songs have previously tended to the week before Christmas - I think we've previously noted how the sales peak used to be about 1 to 2 weeks before. Combined shes still hovering just outside the Top 10, which is pretty much where she has been for the last week or so.

I hope Christmas songs do really well in the chart again this year, despite the rule change. I want it to force the OCC into action again. Even if the action is ridiculous
    And up to #7 now

She’s just broken the record for most streams in a single day for any song ever worldwide.

Yes I think Ariana and Ava’s streams count for twice as much as Mariah’s.

I think Ariana is on about 2m for the week and Mariah on about 5m but her streams will fall off a cliff today and tomorrow so it’s going to be close, especially as Ariana will no doubt still be killing it on YouTube.

Yesterday was an ENORMOUS day in general for streaming in the UK - although AIWFCIY shrunk a bit globally vs the 24th, that 1.63m is the biggest ever single-day streams for a song in the UK, Last Christmas was very close behind at 1.6m, 13 songs streamed over 1m each, One More Sleep had its biggest day ever (728k streams) but was overtaken by Underneath the Tree (754k streams) which seems to be finally making ground over here.

    Friday 21 - Mariah 695k (2017: 480k); Ariana 467k; Ava 410k
    Saturday - Mariah 712k (2017: 570k); Ariana 446k; Ava 393k
    Sunday - Mariah 753k (2017: 600k); Ariana 395k; Ava 355k
    Monday - Mariah 1.188m (2017: 890k); Ariana 397k; Ava 362k
    Tuesday - Mariah 1.638m (2017: 1.299m); Ariana 340k; Ava 302k

    Wednesday -
    Thursday -

5 day totals: Mimi 4.647m, Ariana 2.045m. With the 2 extra days Ariana is basically gonna clinch it, but next year with a 6 day build-up (if the rules don't change) Mariah will get #1.

I can't wait until next year, can't they just fix it and give her a very deserved #1? Thank you. Well, no need to fix anything, just stop dividing her streaming, you bastards.

You have to see their point tho'. Imagine Mariah and Wham! number one and two every year. That would annoy a different set of people in a different way and would lead to all sorts of discussions about "active" listening. It's only fine for a small group of fans/loons and I can totally see why they felt they had to do something to prevent that. But this is what they get for having streaming at all, of course.

WHO CARES if it "annoys a lot of people"! Most hit singles annoy a lot of people. It doesn't MATTER though because the main purpose, sole purpose and indeed only purpose of the chart is to reflect what is popular that week, not to select certain songs and say "this one is still eligible but less eligible for entirely arbitrary reasons".

I imagine All I Want For Christmas Is You being #1 would actually be the most CROWD PLEASING number one of the year ANYWAY, so universally beloved is it, so that whole argument is quite simply a steaming pile of straw-clutching horseshit.

I don’t know what difference it makes but Mariah is actually over 4.9m by my count.

Also, is it still the case that Thursday streaming figures don’t count and an “average” is taken instead? In which case Mariah might have a little bit of an edge there.

Nonsense. The charts are to document SALES of music that week. Do Netflix watches go into the movie charts? No, just bums on seats in the theatres.

They've compromised the chart unnecessarily and now they keep having to try and make it work.

    NEXT.

Charts reflect popularity, not sales. The Hot 100 has always included airplay. The German singles chart goes (or went) by total revenue, just like the US box office. It's only your interpretation of what the chart should be, one stuck in a time long gone where sales counted for anything, that says charts document sales.

The most common collective definition of what a chart should be is that it indicates popularity among those consuming that medium, and that is what streaming does.

Let's not forget that the streams figures quoted are only Spotify, which I believe is about 55% of the total streaming market. Bit if the lead is repeated across Apple Music, deezer etc, her lead is greater.
