This is awful. I was walking up my high street at 8am this morning and it was like a war zone, broken glass everywhere, shops looted, many shops were totally empty. They had robbed shops selling suitcases and then taken those cases to the other shops and filled them up. At 4pm there was an announcement on the tannoy system saying they were advising we should close early as the riots were coming back down from up the road. Bu 4:30pm they advised everyone to leave immediately so we were all evacuated...
No just a smashed window. We had the windows replaced a few months ago when that loon lady smashed them in with a fire extinguisher so we had proper safety glass that they couldn't shatter enough to get through. The shop opposite us was RUINED though; They took £1 million worth of stuff from Boots. Body shop was cleared out too, not a THING left.
I just wrote something about my LOVELY NEW ROOM, thinking this was the daily thread. I was mildly mortified after having expressed my delight, I noticed it was a topic about MINDLESS DESTRUCTION and STEALING. Another topic about Jark then.
My mum's hospital is on major alert and therefore she's not allowed to leave, not that she particularly wants to at the moment. It looks awful. The riots are supposedly going to reach Ilford and Romford soon, so I may well just stay inside for the rest of my life.
There were apparently flats above the branch of Carpet Right that was in there. Some poor bitch was on the news as she was now homeless because of this. She stood watching her flat burn down while some wankers grinned as they looted some shitty rugs.
I can hear police sirens in Leytonstone. In the words of the Kaiser Chiefs - "Ruby, ruby, ruby, ruby"
Time to rename the thread I guess now that Hackney is now getting the BRICK THROUGH WINDOW treatment.
I'm not a London expert but Hackney has always been a bit DOG ROUGH, hasn't it? I remember someone online, that lived in Hackney, saying that they once made a bet with a friend that literally ANYTHING would be stolen if you made it easy enough for someone to take. So she left a Vanessa Paradis single outside on a wall and alas, it was taken within the hour.
Nice article(s) Su, but they do seem almost like they're trying to justify this shit. It's inexcusable.
I think it's quite nice...but i've lived in these East London pockets for the last year so my opinion is skewed from what someone would probably think if they had just seen it. I remember my brother driving me from Berkshire to Bethnal Green and just being like WTF at how it physically looked
I don't think anyone's trying to justify it, just provide a bit of explanation. As the Guardian article says, if we don't try to understand why it's happening, if we just dismiss it as some chavs nicking some TVs, it's not going to help solve the underlying problems.
It has happened countless numbers of times in history throughout Europe and the factors are always the same: Poor economic climate/recovery + Bad Harvest + Uncaring Government = People not caring anymore. This is the behaviour of people who just could not give a shit, and no one starts enters adulthood without any hope at all
There's also nothing good on TV at the moment, they need to rush out X Factor or The Rupert Murdoch Trials quick
yeah i'm a learner...i've been so poor at points this year that at one point Molicious had to come round with a CARE PACKAGE of food, because I couldn't even afford to leave my area on public transport. I understand the despair
OMG I came back from holiday today and was shocked when I opened the papers they gave us on the plane! Those pictures on the BBC news channel now are awful. I don't understand why the police are not interfering? Why not use tear gas or something to disperse the riots?
Yes, it is. The hospital's nice, but when I worked there I hardly ever ventured out of it unless I had to. Sounds a bit snooty to say, but I felt quite exposed walking around in a shirt and nice trousers. The riots have apparently hit Ilford now. My friend is working in Wetherspoons there and says they've had to stop serving and lock up. She's safe, but it's not nice to hear at all.
