To be fair that's BBC News 24 just showing BBC1 main evening news.

This chick has got it pretty much RIGHT.
It's the SHEER FACT they're burning SHOPS in LONDON.
SHOPS in LONDON generally have FLATS ABOVE THEM. With people who LIVE in a FLAT ABOVE A SHOP. That's not on. Burning down strangers homes. That's WELL CUNTY.
I don't live in London, but I do live in a flat above a shop and this is one aspect I find ESPECIALLY shocking.
She WAS actually right about the Sri Lankan civil war. But yes, she's being a total dick about these riots. She's never known how to articulate her opinions effectively.
I don't know if they are actually attacking Birmingham Children's Hospital or if it's just reactionary hysteria.
Poor shop owner on Sky
Still, it's very sad thir livelihood gone
Either way, Bev, there's never been a better time to change the AVATAR...
Heartbreaking hearing the brothers running the family business furniture store that burned down in Croydon talking on Sky News.
it's been time for a change for the last THREE YEARS chez Bev
Just watched that as well... really sad.
TETRIS! My avatar is ICONICK!
I am completely disgusted by whats going on. I understand the poverty and disaffection, and the reality that the media and government has paid little attention until the violence. But the fact that it does our economy more harm in the long-run, that people livelihoods are being destroyed and that LOOTING is just so LOWBROW, makes me super angry and uncomfortable.
That blog I posted is "99% sure" that the attack on the children's hospital is true. :|
Oh, a more reliable source says that's bollocks now.
Re: Lou's question what the foreign media is saying about all of this:
First of all most of them trying to describe the areas and where the riots have taken place so far. Most of the people over here think of London as Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, London Tower and Westminster Abbey but not really beyond that. Hardly anyone has an idea what the (social) situation is like in Tottenham or Hackney, I'd go as far as to assume most people over here (born after 1975) thought Tottenham was just a Football Club and not a proper district and I reckon only a few people would be able to say 'London district' is they were asked 'What or where is Hackney?'.
Some of the more opinionated reports I've read are putting some blame on the police saying they were not evaluating the situation swiftly enough and didn't take appropriate measures in time. Others are reporting a very black and white picture on the issue with headlines such as "Violent attacks from kids and youths shock London".
However, a fair amount of articles have also been criticising the lack of reaction from the government, the prime minister and the mayor (to name a few) who didn't recognise the danger in time, were busy tipping waitresses in Italy and presumed things were going to settle down again. There's been the odd snarky remark about them being more concerned about the image of London and the Olympics 2012 rather than the actual cause of the riots and the problems of the people in those areas, too.
So overall a rather mixed bag but I don't think it's made too much of an impact over here SO FAR. The financial situation in the US and the upcoming aircontroller strike over here are both making bigger waves as of now.
More and more people are saying that rumours about the Birmingham Kids Hospital being attacked are true.
The only one who has spoken the truth about all this is Ken Livingstone. There is a whole generation of disenfranchised youngsters with no education, no jobs and a corrupt moral code they've built for themselves because society values and concepts like citizenship are pure science-fiction to them. The gap between the people governing and the poor is getting so wide that nihilism is setting in.
Theresa May sounds so ALOOF and DISINTERESTED in this whole thing it's revolting. The fucking PM was busy taking pictures of himself with an Italian waitress yesterday, Boris Johnson is MIA.. these people are so cut off reality it's a LAUGH they're the ones making decisions. Send them all to MARE STREET.
The local radio station has just said that there's a police presence there but no issue at present. Everything's a bit uncertain still.
The whole "lost generation" thing has been kicking around for a while now. All of this is a very GRIM manifestation of it.
You shouldn't use this phrase any more. It's what the rioters want.
I know it sounds convenient and it makes it "a story" but I think the reality of "the cuts" has seeped through to the local councils and the local communities, that's why it's all kicking off now and not a year ago.
My boyfriend's theory is it's summer and they're all in the streets cos they got nothing better to do though.
Breaking news: My MUMS old ottoman was from the furniture shop that has been burnt down in Croydon.
You touch the ratty and my grandad will HAUNT YOU
Please don't bum him.
Carol Decker is calling for STERILISATION.
Just heard my first siren of the evening going down Maida Vale/Edgware Road.
We only saw a lot of ambulances when coming back to Bow, but one did look like it had police inside. A guy on the steeet said a few things were kicking off by Roman Road which is 3 minutes from here, but I think it was the Bethnal Green end that's about a mile away.
Like I'd ever TOP
I think you're probably in one of the safer major cities right now, what with it being about 90% limp arts grads at the moment. The chances are the most you've got to worry about is SHIT MUSICAL THEATRE
Maybe there's been a stabbing outside the Dominoes Pizza. Happened all the time* when I lived in the area.
It just GETS WORSE. Attacking shops etc is one thing but then mindlessly attacking people is just a whole new
:O I hope my old 'hood is okay.
They're looting Armani shops in Birmingham. That's more like it. Next stop setting fire to BANKS.
I don't find anything funny in this at all. It's horrific.
PRECISELY. I know my dwellings will be unaffected. It's just quite shocking to think people with the same living situation in other cities are in a very scary position right now.
Sky News is a treat with the reporter SHOUTING at the looters.
The only thing not taken from Currys was a few VCRs. They're NEVER getting rid of that stock.
I tend to agree with him on a lot of this. However, he was UTTERLY RUDE to the BBC reporter asking him questions earlier, just ignoring every question she had and filling it in with his political agenda.
I'm not sure M.I.A. would be pleased to hear you say this.
I'm calling for CAROL DECKER's HEAD on a PLATE
THAT'S MORE LIKE IT!
There has been nothing at all here in West London, even though we're not exactly in the nicest part of West London, but the streets definitely seem quite a bit emptier... For the first time tonight, I feel a bit nervous - we live above a shop!!
I think we're safe tonight, but who knows what tomorrow will bring.
