National selection for Ukraine kicked off last night. These were the first three qualifiers from the first semi final.

    Maruv - Siren Song

    Brunettes Shoot Blondes - Houston

    Yuko - Galyna Guilala

That Maruv song has something about it, but I can't help feeling it's just a touch style over substance.

So i thought Siren Song was just ok until the HUGE HORN BREAKDOWN and it really really picks up a notch in song and performance - is this the favourite to win? I know she/they had a huge hit in Eastern Europe with Drunk Groove.

If picked I think it’s definitely looking at a top 5 finish and one of the years big fan favourites.

Is there a favourite? It really should be MARUV or Freedom Jazz.

They both won their respective semi finals so they're the frontrunners, yes.

Loving the pregnant choreo in Freedom Jazz.

I love Kazka. In studio. That bitch is a fucking terrible live singer. And her attitude! Their video of the live performance has about five times more dislikes than likes.

Despite an absolute hatchet job of a national final in which Jamala aggressively questioned her loyalty to Ukraine, Maruv wins! :disco:

Maruv was always going to win off of the back of Drunk Groove, right? Someone tell @Zu-Klara who will be all over this delicious hot mess.

The Vice Prime Minister has just said they will not approve someone who has toured in an aggressor stage. Maruv has performed in Russia. So she’s not gonna go. Looks like it will be Freedom Jazz. Ugh.

I love the performance. Fucking filth! I imagine it'll be toned down a bit before Eurovision though.

That sour-faced bellend Jamala didn't look impressed.

    So, it's not going?
I had just started thinking of this on the Eurovision stage. It will definitely get people talking. And the song isn't bad either.

    Oh come ON.

This year is lacking any kind of SULTRY CHEAP BANGER and if Ukraine drops this tune, then they fully deserve the BERGENDAHL TREATMENT this year.

In the end I might even prefer Cupidon so I wouldn’t be that upset about it.

Ukraine can FUCK OFF. Why even let someone in the selection process if there is a chance they won't send them? If they don't let her go I am OFFICIALLY done with Ukraine.

Eurovision Official Twitter account just deleted their post about MARUV as an official Ukraine representative in Tel Aviv too. :wired:

Ugh. I swear this year is just one SHITSHOW after another. Siren Song is the only song I have anything over a 6/10 so far. Thank fuck the tickets were so expensive cos standing in the arena for all this pish is not worth nearly £1,000.

^ I read that Maruv was crying backstage after Jamala pretty much went INQUISTION on her and this, and they almost couldn't do her interview for the program's webshow during the break. :(

Obviously I selfishly hope she complies, but I'd be very tempted to tell them to fuck right off if I were in her position.

Last night's performance was better than the semi. Minimal changes for Tel Aviv please.

She’s on a Russian record label, so I wouldn’t hold out much hope. :(

But why let it get this far? None of this is new information, is it?

The Ukrainian public broadcaster outsources the song selection to another commercial channel apparently, who would have chosen Maruv, which I suppose would go SOME way to explaining how this has arisen.

Is this a channel/Ukraine Eurovision decision then or a bigger national decision? If it's the latter it wouldn't matter what channel picked her, would it?

Has someone just decided suddenly it makes them uncomfortable? Is this only happening because of FUCKING Jamala?

I don't even really care but it's the only genuinely good song/perf so far!

Well the public broadcaster is answerable to the government so I suppose somewhere in the middle.

You just would have thought with all the faff over evil disabled terrorist Julia Samoylova they would be more prepared for this, although I know it's not exactly the same.

Anyone would think it was MADE UP drama.

I’m finding this whole saga SO FASCINATING for so many reasons.

At the core of it I think is essentially MARUV doesn’t need to do Eurovision - she was asked by the broadcaster to participate and very much has a sizeable current career in the East at the moment. She’s obviously realised however the platform Eurovision would offer is massive - particularly as both Drunk Groove and Siren Song have potential to crossover in the West as hits outside the contest (in many ways I’m amazed somebody hasn’t picked up on Drunk Groove already, it could obviously have some sort of success in Western Europe with the right backing).
Normally an artist wouldn’t be in the position to release details of the contract and protest (apparently it’s the same contract each Ukrainian contestant has been given for the past few years), but essentially Ukraine need MARUV as much as she needs the Ukraine

I wouldn’t be shocked for her to pull out though, most of her career is tied up in Russia.
