Finally - a thread about Mariah's music in this dump!

Anyway, I quite like it... especially her classy Eminem diss "Clown".. and I have a soft spot for the shit stuff like "Boy (I Need You)" and "Yours", don't know why.. "Sunflowers.." could have been better but it's still good.. not bad for an impulse 3 quid purchase from Fopp.. and it's the 17-track UK re-re-issue with "I Know What you Want" on it too..

Boy and Bringing on the heartbreak are amongst my favorites ever
The fact that I own the 2cd Edition is better cause of the 4 bonus tracks and 2 bonus videos. I love some tracks like Clown, Lullaby, Saving grace, Irresistible.... I can't listen to it without skipping the usual suspects such as Yours, I only wanted, You got me (An edited version wouldn't do any harm), Sunflowers, Through the rain remix, Subtle invitation (eew)...
It's nice for what it is, the transition of loony breakdown-ish Mariah and the emancipated Mariah we all got to see this year.

I like "Subtle Invitation".. it's 'quirky' enough for Mariah whose work is usually more formulaic than that... and "I Only Wanted" is lovely.

I hate it.. 'cause my sister likes it.. she has a tendency to ruin songs..

I prefer the more culturally enriching remix

I would say that this album has some of her best writing on it. Not that it has a few misteps. But what I do hate on this record is that the raps are almost unbearable because they are so horrible. Irrisitable's raps are the only good ones in my opinion.

This would be one of her best albums ever for me except for the fact of the vocals. They just arn't that good. She switches between very raspy to full sceraming continusously. I think Through The Rain could have been phenominal except for the vocals.

Favorites: Through The Rain, I Only Wanted, Clown, My Saving Grace, You Had Your Chance, Lullaby, Subtle Invitation, Sunflowers for Alfred Roy, Bringin on the Heartbreak(Redone vocal version)

Horrible Atrocities to her cataloge: Boy(I Need You), Yours(yet I still listen to this one) and You Got Me(Mariah does not have a chipmunk living in her vocal chords)

    It's shit. Boring dull bollocks.

However, "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" is class. Especially that dog whistle thing.

It's a good "album" as a whole but absolutely no single worthy tunes on here - which deservedly killed the project commercially. The hollow whispering is near unlistenable in my opinion and ruins "TTR" and "BOTH" in particular - they would've been a lot better. And I HATE HATE HATE HATE when she switches from whisper to full voice every other word (See: TTR).

When the album was first released I liked it, however, if I am being truthful it was most probably down to me forcing myself to like it. There are a handful of songs that I do think are genuinely amongst her best moments [Clown and Subtle Invitation for example] and Through the Rain is Mariah by numbers BUT it did what it needed to do. I’ll never forget the excitement of hearing her new single for the first time! On the whole the vocals are the weakest point of the album but Im not convinced that it was because her voice was shot to pieces. When I saw her live a couple of years back her voice was nothing short of remarkable and she shifted from the powerful vocal we all know and love to the whisper we all know and hate with ease. I think another reason for my dislike of the album is that much of it felt like a retread of past hits. I Only Wanted for example is just another watered down version of My All. These days I would say its my least favourite album by her and I havent listened to it for a very long time. Arguably it was with this album that I stopped being a fan of Mariah Carey the singer and embraced Mariah Carey the ditzy diva.

Generally vile, insipid, bland, terminally dull, dreary, tiresome etc. I remember some of the numpty fans at the time saying it was amongst her best work. I disliked it from the get-go, it just lacks any decent energy and spirit. Most of the ballads are re-hashes and the uptempo tracks are just SO lame. You Got Me, Irresistable, You Had Your Chance etc, yuck, can't listen to any of them. Bringin' On The Heartbreak is just horrendous. It really makes my ears bleed, and ever since then I know EXACTLY why some people can't stand her. Above all, the vocals are just so crappy. Several of the songs would probably be OK if she wasn't singing like a retard.

    Positives:

Yours is quite dinky and nice. The One has a pleasant tune and Clown is quirky and amusing. The sole moment of originality on the album. I'm also quite fond of Through The Rain ( :black: Remix)
