What a fabulous top 3! Obviously my winner would have been I Don't Want To but all the other songs (bar the post-More Than a Woman ones who I'm not familiar with) are amazing. I really miss 90's Toni!

I actually LOST Yesterday & Please in the GREAT LOUFOQUE GYPSY ERA of 012-013. But some of the more obscure post The Heat tracks would go down a treat.

It's such a shame Hit The Freeway and Yesterday bombed. It must be so dispiriting to release such great material and get nothing back, especially given the fall from grace compared to her heyday.

Toni's career is a bit like Brandy's in the sense that she just stopped being successful, despite no obvious decline in the quality of her output.

At least with Mariah, you can largely map a correlation between chart success and quality of the music.

I've been having a Toni Braxton binge today for no reason, and I was just reading this wonderful top 50. But I'm missing Give U my heart, which I LOVE.

@Whatevar would any tracks from Love, Marriage & Divorce, Sex & Cigarettes or other releases such as Do It (with Missy Elliot) have made the cut?

@Whatevar Sorry I missed the conclusion of this! I’m going on a Toni binge tonight.

do you know what I think of when I think of Toni? Actually @Loufoque mentioned it above, but I was gonna say it anyways - even almost 30 years in her career, she has never stopped giving us great songs. You can really pull out songs this decade that stand up with hit-making era. When you’re a fan of somebody, you’d rather that, than the alternative of continued success with diminishing returns on quality.

also, and probably related to above, her voice has REALLY held up with age.

And for the chatter about her lack of success, it’s not actually unusual for an R&B star to move into fan only territory after 20 years. Aretha, Donna, Chaka, Patti, they never stopped and apart from the odd peak never reclaimed their glory years. It’s ok to still love them. We just can’t forget that Toni had not one bit TWO of the biggest selling albums of the 90s. That’s not small time.

I retract this statement, in light of Caution, and my ongoing stannage of the singles from Me... I Am Mariah, the Elusive Chanteuse.

The Elusive Chanteuse was not my album of choice, but I ADORE Triumphant (Get 'Em), Hashtag Beautiful, Almost Home and You're Mine (Eternal). That mini-flop era was sublime. However Caution shat all over everything from last decade from a great height. THAT was her best album since Butterfly.
