I'm not a massive fan of Odyssey. It's obviously on another level when you compare it to the competition and some parts are deliriously giddy, but in my opinion it's a step down from the Galaxy games which are sublime, purer platformers. I finished it with 250 moons or something and have never touched it again.

Zelda on the other hand is the complete opposite, I don't ever want to revisit Skyward Sword ever again but Breath of the Wild is EVERYTHING.

@VoR most of the sandbox Mario games are like Odyssey in the way the levels are structured.

I LOVE IT, but it’s one of the reasons Nintendo seem to alternate between this and something more linear like Super Mario 3D World. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see the next one revert to something a little more traditional.

I'm really tempted to get Overwatch. I was never willing to pay for online on PS4 or XB1 so it was a pass for me, but I always thought this looked really good visually. However, obviously there is a downgrade on Switch so it doesn't quite "pop" as before, and also my only experience with shooters lies pretty much with the Splatoon series. Is it accessible for "beginners"?

Also, I could be hung out to dry here, but if anyone is inclined here is my Switch friend code:

Meanwhile, I didn't realise that Aladdin and Lion Kong compilation is out in a mere 5 days. I'm so excited and it's a lot cheaper than my sidelined intention of re-buying that gorgeous Megadrive II Aladdin bundle I had as a kid.

The next month is pretty SOLID:

    Luigi's Mansion 3
Aladdin / Lion King re-master (appreciate this is fairly NICHE - and hugely overpriced for what it is)
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (apparently not as shit as the last few)
    Pokemon Sword / Shield

There is a demo for Mario and Sonic out today, but I've not played it yet. I'm most excited about the retro mode, but they should have used the 16-bit aesthetic for Mario to match Sonic.

Also, I have no idea where they go next year, but we've been saying that every year since the Switch effectively brought all the big-hitters out in its first year.

    A few things I wouldn't MIND:

    Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 re-master (a new 3D one is a while off)
Breath Of The Wild 2 (big game next Christmas?)
Mario Kart 9 (although 8 is still selling LOADS)
Metroid Prime Trilogy (we already know this exists)

I also wouldn't be surprised to see a Switch Pro or something similar - there's about a year until the PS5 launches, but I think Nintendo will want to try and up the power of the Switch a BIT in readiness.

I can't honestly remember a time when it was SO exciting to be a Nintendo-loon. The Wii was obviously bonkers, but a lot of the games ended up being gimmicks - particularly as the console aged. I'm really glad the focus has really remained on GAMES this time around. Even if they did just release that weird Yoga game.

SURELY they’ve got SOMETHING up their sleeves?
There’ll be a sharp sales decline otherwise.

Oh I would love a Galaxy 1&2 HD package, but I was also hopeful a waggle-free Donkey Kong Country Returns HD would have came with the Tropical Freeze port.

Because MK9 would be silly given how well 8DX is doing, i think they have the opportunity to finally give us Diddy Kong Racing 2, put those arcade MK games on the eShop, or do an anniversary (eshop) release of Super Mario Kart with new 16-bit versions of more recent tracks and an expanded roster (SNES Rosalina, much?). Not that I've thought much about it. They also still have all those hundreds of Wave Race and F-Zero fans to pander to.

Another Donkey Kong game seems very likely; Tropical Freeze has done really quite well.

I’ve still got my hopes up that the next iteration of Mario Kart will be Super Smash Kart. They’ve already started bringing in other franchises, and the tracks based on Animal Crossing and Legend of Zelda were some of the better new ones. If nothing else, there is an almost endless list of potential DLC. The fact that they’ve not even really bothered doing anything with Mario Kart 8 in that respect makes me feel it must be a placeholder for the next in the series.

The situation with Retro is rather curious. Whatever they were doing before officially being assigned to restart Metroid Prime 4 was either cancelled or overdue being revealed. I could wait a little longer for another DKC game, although it was definitely in my top 5 Wii U games and I double dipped (and seem to have forgot the difficulty like child birth).

So the reviews for Pokemon Sword and Shield are coming out decidedly mixed. I'm sure it'll be huge anyway though...

Guys, I know almost *nothing* about gaming, but am thinking of treating myself to a Nintendo Switch Lite, as I travel quite a bit. Are they worth it? Could anyone recommend the best games for it? Thank you!

I've just been asked to do a top 10 of the Switch's best 2019 games for a small US paper I used to write for. Apart from Tetris 99, my current list is all Nintendo first party games. Yes, that's par for the course (of course), but they really are on a bit of a roll that doesn't seem to be slowing down. A Direct next month will surely keep this going. Just give me Aninal Crossing already (although I hope its came a long way from a so so reveal).

What kind of games do you like? It's hard to recommend on a vacuum apart from the obvious JITS (Mario, Zelda).

Thank you! It's hard to say what games I like, as honestly, the last time I played a computer game was on an Atari in the 80s! I used to like space-set, laser-shooting kind of games. I'd probably also like games that are related to Star Wars or Marvel etc, if they even exist? As I say, I don't know much about the gaming world, but I don't think I'd be into the kind of game that is too indepth, or take too long to get into, or require prior knowledge etc. So something fairly easy to pick up and start enjoying, and that's more in the action/adventure/sci-fi vein perhaps.

Super Mario Odyssey for sure. It’s so much fun to play, only gets particularly challenging towards the end and is all about adventure and exploring.

One more question. A friend of mine used to have a Nintendo Gameboy in the late 90s/early 2000s and loved playing Crash Bandicoot and Super Mario. What games do you think he'd like for the Nintendo Switch Lite? Super Mario Odyssey also?

From what you said, definitely go for Mario Odyssey and also the latest Zelda (Link's Awakening). Breath of the Wild is the best game on the Switch but it's a bit more full-on. If you like Mario's shtick I definitely recommend Luigi's Mansion 3 too, especially since you probably haven't played the first two.

I'm not into Marvel or Star Wars but there is Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 (developed by the Ninja Gaiden studio) and a new Lego Star Wars game is coming out next year encompassing the new films. All Lego games are fairly simple to pick up and play and there are several on the Switch (I think there's a Marvel one?).

If you like spacey games I recommend Everspace (digital only) and Starlink. They're a bit repetitive but they scratch that itch for sure. If you like space exploration (not just shooting) The Outer Worlds is coming to Switch early next year too - I haven't played it on PS4 so cannot tell you if it's worth it, but it looks interesting.

If you are okay with 2D, I'd suggest the BRILLIANT Hollow Knight, Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom, Celeste and Mark of the Ninja. And if you're planning on playing online, Tetris 99, Smash, Mario Kart and Splatoon all offer something different - if you haven't played their previous iterations even more so.

So, having purchased a Switch 4 weeks ago, I can definitely echo the other guys' recommendations. I'm currently sitting with Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart 8 which are both fun enough for short time entertainment but Mario Odyssey is really where it's at. Just really well put together, lots of imagination and straddles the balance between luring in new players/being accessible and pandering to long time Nintendo players beautifully.

I've got Zelda Link's Awakening ready to go and play and I've started but it definitely takes a little longer to get into it and find your groove, looks great though.

Seriously, why has Dream Daddy Dating Simulator never been on sale? Has anyone even played it? Surely @Diddy has?

Anyway, I'd already pre-ordered Animal Crossing, but that youtube Direct looked so good.

I did lose my shit at that AC Direct though, I ascended to another plane of existence and wore Jacob’s Ladders in my hair

The Gamecube one is a masterpiece in my opinion, all the others are solid but just tweak the formula. This looks like it has scope and ambition. Mildly excited... I just wish Nintendo would put this amount of care and effort into NEW IP.

I've been playing a few artsy fartsy games lately. Namely the ones below. All brilliant and beautiful, but Gorogoa is definitely my favourite. Any other suggestions along these lines?

I'm also interested in a game called I Am Dead, but waiting on a sale. You're watching secret webcam footage that spied on people in order to solve a crime.

Another game I have in my watch list that may be relevant is Night In The Woods.

The wish list feature is such a god send for their maddening sales selection that can't be sorted into newest first.
