When the four countries you've gone for have a combined population of less than 25 million, you know you're in trouble.

    18. Romania. Have qualified 7 times for a world cup with a best result of quarter-finals in 1994; although they have been absent for the last 20 years, finishing below Poland, Denmark and little Montenegro in the last attempt. Ranked 30th

    51. Liechtenstein. 6 attempts, and 6 abject failures. Looked to be having a good campaign in 2006 when they actually managed to win two qualifying matches; but for the 2018 world cup they came away from qualifying with a record of: played 10, lost 10, scored 1, conceded 39. Little hope. Ranked 180th.

    118. Swaziland. 7 attempts, and very little show for it. Actually had a good result in the first round of African Qualifying, beating Djibouti 8-1 over two legs. However then they were unlucky to draw Nigeria in the second round, coming away with a fairly creditable 2-0 loss. Ranked 134th.

    181. Northern Ireland. 15 attempts & 3 qualifications, reaching a quarter-final in 1958. Although they've not qualified since Mexico 1986, they're undergoing a renaissance of late, finishing second in qualifying ahead of the Czech Republic, and only narrowly losing to Switzerland in the playoffs. Ranked 29th.

    Sheena's selection is definitely worse.

    9. CAYMAN ISLANDS

In sixteen qualification games, spanning 6 world cup tournaments, the Cayman Islands have yet to win a game; although they did nearly pass first round qualifying anyway, drawing twice with Belize but going out on the dreaded away-goals rule. Currently ranked #202 (note: rankings have changed since I started this so you may find some repeats!)

    47 - YEMEN

7 attempts so far, none executed. Although lowly ranked, they're not the worst team in Asia (just nearly). In 2018 they made it past Pakistan over two legs in the first round, before making it to the second round group stage. There, they played eight and won just one (against the Philippines) to finish bottom. Ranked #133

    55 - TURKMENISTAN

(I love their flag, it's like a nice rug)

six attempts, and a broadly equal win-loss ratio, Turkmenistan aren't a terrible team, but they won't qualify for the world cup either. They got a bye to round two of the Asian qualifying, where they finished mid table behind Iran & Oman, but ahead of Guam and India. Ranked 130.

    199 - AUSTRALIA

Australia's world cup record flatters them somewhat, truth be told. They've qualified five times, including the last four in a row, despite being ranked well behind some of their Asian rivals. Yes, Asian - since 2006, they gave up on their own continent. They had to squeak through Asian qualifying for 2018, beating Syria in a play-off in extra time.

In sixteen world cup matches, they've only won two, and made it through the last 16 in 2006, beaten by eventual champions Italy. Ranked 43rd.

You blatantly picked me the worst teams because I questioned your authority in the posters thread :D

    Thank you @Indie :)

Probably the best draw so far - a couple of quality countries interspersed with a couple of nice holiday destinations.

    94 - MALDIVES

For a country of 0.5 million, they don't scrub up terribly. In 2018 qualifying, they got a bye through to round 2, where they finished 4th out of 5 (behind Qatar, China & Hong Kong but ahead of Bhutan). Which probably represents their 2nd best attempt in 6. Ranked 151.

    95 - URUGUAY

Twice winners, though not for 68 years, Uruguay have always been fairly high in world football despite the country's relatively small size. Of 13 tournaments entered, they've made the quarter-finals or better 7 times, including in 2018 when they were beaten at that stage by eventual winners France. Ranked 5th.

    96 - FIJI

In the world's easiest qualification tournament in Oceania, they've had 9 attempts but not got anywhere close. Most recent time around, they got through the second round marginally (by beating Vanuatu 3-2) then finished bottom of their third round group behind New Zealand and New Caledonia. Ranked 168.

    97 - BELGIUM

Seeing something of a 'golden generation' in recent years, Belgium have qualified for the world cup 13 times, finishing a record-high of 3rd in the 2018 edition, and quarter finals four year previous. Could be regarded as unlucky to make it through to the finals after topping their initial group but being handed a hard path through to the finals as a reward. Could have easily won it on another day. Currently ranked Joint 1st in the world (with France)

    Not a bad little lot...

    89 - SCOTLAND

Qualified for the world cup 8 times, although not since 1998, since when Scottish football has been on a bit of a downturn. In their 24 matches at the world cup, they've only won 4, and never progressed past the first round. In 2018, they finished 3rd in their qualifying group, behind England and Slovakia, but ahead of Slovenia, Malta and Lithuania. Ranked 40th.

    98 - PANAMA

Panama qualified for the 2018 tournament and this was their first time - then they got roundly stuffed by everyone and were officially ranked last. Their qualification path could be seen as fortunate - they finished behind Costa Rica in the fourth round and squeeked through in the 5th, finished ahead on goal difference over Honduras and ahead by one point of the US, despite only winning 3 of their 10 games. Ranked 76th.

    110 - MONGOLIA

Mongolia have never qualified for the world cup and never look likely to - However, they do have the odd record of having won 100% of their matches in 2018 qualifying (East Timor officially beat Mongolia 5-1, but were later disqualified for fielding illegible players - but this was long afterwards; East Timor continued to play in the competition). Before that, they've only won one qualifying game. Ranked 188th.

    120 - ENGLAND

    EN-GUR-LUND

Despite the negativity, England's football team have a very reasonable record at the world cup. Qualified 15 out of 21 times (although they didn't enter for the first three) they made it to the semi-finals last time for the 3rd time in their history, and of course they were champions in 1966. They've not lost a qualification game since 2009. Currently ranked 5th

    I don't seem to have done this yet so I'll take 53, 67, 71 and 103.

The four lowest remaining primes won't let me down.

    53 - HUNGARY

A fairly spent force in world football, Hungary have qualified for the world cup 10 times but not once since 1986. In their hayday they finished runners up twice (1938 and 1954) and even in the 70s they managed to reach the semis of the European championship twice. Sadly these days, they finished 3rd out of 6 in 2018 qualifying - which sounds fine, but they were 14 points behind second placed Switzerland. Ranked 52nd.

    67 - KOSOVO

No hayday to note for Kosovo, who only started competing in the 2018 qualifiers, and then soundly got beaten by everyone (well, they drew one game) and finished bottom of their group. But wait, there is hope: they won their nation leagues group (admittedly, against Faroes, Malta and Azerbaijan) so maybe better times are ahead for 2022. Ranked 130.

    71 - MADAGASCAR

9 attempts at qualifying, none successful - Madagascar aren't great, but they're not the worst team in Africa by a long way. Their last attempt they beat Central African Republic in the first qualifying round, but lost to Senegal in the second. Probably their best run was for the 2010 world up, reaching the 3rd round of qualifying (out of 4) and narrowly failing to get through. Ranked 107.

    103 - SENEGAL

Possibly (although debatably) the best team in Africa in the last twenty years, Senegal may have only qualified twice but a run to the quarter finals in 2002, they were pretty unlucky to be knocked out of the group stage in 2018 based on fair play alone in a fairly tricky group. Made it through qualification unbeaten. Ranked 24th.
