Oh hang on, we are both right, I have the DRC and you have... the other Congo? I can’t remember which is which though. Mine has Democratic in the name so I assume it must be an autocratic state.

I don’t know which one is famous for Um Bongo though

    58 - ANGUILLA

Well, it doesn't get much worse than this. Ranked 209th out of 211 (fuck you, San Marino & Bahamas, you ain't got nothing on Anguilla) - Anguilla have only won five matches in their history (three against British Virgin Islands, one against Montserrat and one against Saint Barthelemy), and none of them in a world cup qualification tournament. Last time out they were given a pretty tricky first round tie against Nicaragua, and promptly lost 8-0 on aggregate.

    160 - SIERRA LEONE

Rounding off this pair of losers, Sierra Leone have attempted to qualify for a world cup 10 times, have played 40 games and won a huge 9 of them. A bit unlucky last time with a 2-2 aggregate draw against Chad seeing them pack up their hopes and wait another 4 years. Ranked 115.

    87 - COSTA RICA

After a relatively slow start, failing to qualify for 7 tournaments, they've qualified for 5 of the last 8. This includes a memorable 2014 appearance where they finished top of their group stage (knocking England and Italy out), then dispensing Greece in the next round. At the quarter finals, they lost on penalties to the Netherlands. 2018 was a bit more low-key, finishing bottom of their group, after a pretty straightforward qualification process. Ranked 39th

    192 - KUWAIT

Fairly middle of the road as far as Asian teams go, Kuwait's heyday was in the early 1980's where they qualified for the 1982 world cup. They managed two losses and draw in that tournament after landing in England's group. They also won the 1980 Asian Cup on home soil. They were going okay in the 2018 qualification process, but half way through were disqualified and automatically lost their last three games. Whoops. Ranked 156 (although were as high as 24th back in 1998)

Still got a few big European teams unpicked - Croatia, Germany, Italy & Netherlands still all yet to be chosen.

A FLURRY of activity in Africa over the weekend, as no less than 14 teams were dumped out at the first stage.

    Lesotho(@Sheena) defeated Ethiopia (unclaimed)
    Zimbabwe(unclaimed) defeated Somalia (@Rita)
    Namibia(@Win_the_game) defeated Eritrea (unclaimed)
    Tanzania(@Kate) defeated Burundi (@Tischlampe)
    Djibouti (@Ag) defeated Eswatini(@Logic?)
    Malawi(@Win_the_game) defeated Botswana (@Cécile)
    Angola(@Rhythmbarbican) defeated Gambia (unclaimed)
    Liberia (@octophone) defeated Sierra Leone(@Penelope)
    Mozambique(Jae) defeated Mauritius (unclaimed)
Guinea-Bissau(unclaimed) defeated São Tomé and Príncipe (@Diddy)
Equatorial Guinea(unclaimed) defeated South Sudan (unclaimed)
    Togo(@Jark) defeated Comoros (@lolly)
    Sudan(@Jae) defeated Chad (@octophone)
    Rwanda(unclaimed) defeated Seychelles (@Sheena)

All went to world ranking expectation, apart from Djibouti (ranked 195) making it through (well done to @Ag) and Liberia (ranked 152) springing a massive shock on Sierra Leone (go team @octophone).

Stuffing of the round went to Seychelles, who were overturned 10-0 against Rwanda (Soz @Sheena)

The second round in Asian qualifying is also underway, but as a group stage there's not much to say after 1/2 rounds of games.

Might allow additional picks if people lose most of their teams. So, not yet.

Well, what are the odds of Suomi getting Suomi? (3.5%, in case you didn't ask)

    132 - DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

8 attempts to qualify and none successful, DomRep aren't the worst team on the continent but they're not the best by a long shot. A pretty poor attempt last time saw them get a bye to round two, but then get beaten by Belize over two legs. Ranked 155.

    86 - FINLAND

Not one of the European powerhouses, Finland have attempted to qualify for 19 world cups that it's gone for, even back in 1936, when barely anyone else bothered to try. 2018 qualification saw them finish 5th out of 6 teams, ahead of only Kosovo. But wait! 4 wins out of 6 in European qualification so far, and winning their nation league group - is this Finland finally waking up from their slumbler? Ranked 56th.

Couple of central American no-hopers beginning with G, you say? Your wish is granted.

    30 - GUATEMALA

Although no qualifications in 15 attempts, it's probably a bit unfair to call them no-hopers. As a mid-size country in the area they do fairly well - for example, in 2018 qualification they got through rounds two and three only to get unstuck but only narrowly, just three points behind the USA in that qualification phase. Ranked 144.

    171 - GRENADA

7 attempts to qualify, 5 games won out of 21 in the process. They're not likely to get far, although they graned a win over Puerto Rico in the last qualification process, they lost against Haiti in the next round. Ranked 173. Nice flag though.

Has your team won world cup 2022? No. ha.

it means you picked 6 teams, and 5 of them are still in. I probably should note it's because most of them haven't played a game yet...
