It's bizarre and decidedly uncomfortable to observe how much pleasure a group of gays gets from seeing a talented woman (and gay icon) "fail"

A horrible person? Seems rather dramatic for someone who just enjoys the sound of her own voice. She hasn't done anything EVIL. She's not CILLA BLACK.

Oh Jark what are you banging on about?

She is hardly a gay icon - maybe for some 20-30-ish gays that preferred her vocals to the rest of the world who preferred the actual popstar Britney.

The fact she comes across as a bit of a bitch in nearly every interview, has a constant snarl on her mug and hasn't released much worth of note (except a fucking Pitbull collaboration) in 14 years means it's a welcome flush down the shitter.

Yeah she definitely had a limited shelf-life as a “gay icon” once the Stripped era was over.

"Keeps Gettin' Better" and her efforts to one-up Gaga at her own schtick with 1/10 the quality of song was when I jumped off the X-Tina bus

The hubris was starting to certainly creep in with B2B, however....

Omg I’m glad Jark still has the moral high ground!!

But I agree, I don’t think it helps anyone to attack the only big pop names we have left. There’s no reason to tear SuRie down like that.

I like Xtina as a concept, as a villainess, and for the memories. Lotus was alright too.

I'm pretty sure people wanna see her succeed. We make fun of her flop because we're turning lemons into lemonade. It's in our nature. This isn't Jessie J we're talking about.

I don't want her to succeed. It would only mean I was more likely to be subjected to her inadvertently.

I don't feel particularly BOTHERED if she succeeds or not. However, I don't think she has anyone to blame but herself for her current commercial woes after actively steering almost EVERYTHING post-Stripped straight into the gutter.

I think it was pretty telling when Lotus failed. She had a major platform to promote it (The Voice) and it was hot off the heels of "Moves Like Jagger" that it should have rebounded her status as a major pop player from Bionic. It also was a quite GOOD album (IMO the most consistent of her recent three) albeit somewhat safe. It just still didn't connect. She certainly didn't HELP its case, given the utter lack of "Your Body" performance (other than the comedy/pretend Jimmy Fallon one) and lack of enthusiasm but it's not like her six year absence after that album put this album in a good position to turn her fortunes.

Lotus was a fucking dreadful album containing precisely two good songs and zero musical identity. It is almost universally, and rightfully, considered the nadir of her career. Of course it bombed, Voice or no.

Looking like a drag queen for 10 years and using sad homosexuals as props in her music video does NOT a gay icon make!

If anything, her denying Dannii Minogue a UK #1 should bar her from the title forever.

Actually her role as the PG-13 Nomi Malone opened up a lot of eyes to queer art.

I love the Jark BOOKOFFACTS that’s going on in this thread.

Is it “universally” considered her nadir? I thought the general, non-gay hyperbole was that it was “Bionic”?

I think the general consensus is that Bionic is a complete conceptual mess but at least has a handful of high quality tracks like the ballads (particularly You Lost Me, an Xtina classic) and she's in good voice, whereas Lotus sounds like it was recorded in her bathroom, she sounds rough and it's all 100% phoned in. I doubt you'd find many fans who genuinely think Lotus is a good record.

I like Lotus, but I quite agree it’s quite faceless.

I do also agree though that it should have been bigger (deservedly or not). Just A Fool has the makings of a huge country hit, but it’s almost as if no-one at the label actually noticed what an opportunity it would have been to break into that market.

But absolutely, exposure wise it should have amounted to more. Let’s face it, Cherly has basically built her whole album career out of some well-placed singles timed with an X Factor performance - and those albums were no less patchy than Lotus. Christina should have been able to emulate that.

Yes- Lotus is certainly a FLAWED album, particularly the sound quality, but the writing was pretty much on the wall when it bombed. It was in 2012, we weren't that removed from her '99-'08 hit making days and it was in the thick of The Voice/ the high profile collabs, and the album was consciously very very accessible and current.

I forgot how bad the sound quality was in places.

Light Up The Sky is probably the biggest culprit. I guess they were trying to make it sound like a big, epic number but it comes off completely muffled.
