Sanctify is fine but doesn't exactly scream BIG HIT, and with it seeming so long since the last album I think it may be a struggle for them anyway.

Looks like they spent on the video and he was certainly feeling uninhibited when it came to whatever the dancing talent show bit was meant to be.

His voice is usually fine for me on record. The live bleating and caterwauling all over the place I'll give you.

He is insufferable in this video and the song is subpar.

King was a great little tune, but I am beyond over them. He is such an annoying dick.

To his credit, he's not Sam Smith.

My worst experience of 2017 was standing in the middle of the Brighton Pride crowd, post panic attack, mid hangover, watching him slide around the stage in a string vest.

"King" was so perfect and "Eyes Shut" hit the mark too. The rest of the album was a treat, but a rather forgettable one in the end.

This is doing absolutely zero for me and the video and social media "campaign" are like something out of 2001, and not in a good way.

King was wonderful and a part of me really loves that there's so much money behind something as unapologetically GAY as that video, but I don't think this is really the track to ensure the label will shell out quite as much again for more like it.

One of the not-Olly chaps looks EXACTLY like my Brazilian EX which is starting to trigger me every time I see them mentioned.

    I agree it’s a bit underwhelming.

It sounds like something that should have been a bonus track on a deluxe version of the last album. Not the lead single from a new album.

Not a fan of these at all. Take Shelter was quite good, Desire was tolerable and the rest either bland or annoying. I don't *hate* this but there's not exactly much to it.

This new one is kind of plinky plonky:

There's a bit in Q on the new album which says it is less chirpy dance pop than the debut, and more the middle ground between Perfume Genius and the PSB. Hmmmm...

Olly also says the other two 'stepped back' for this album so he could tell his story about identity and that it will be all his fault if it goes tits up. Oh he says that now. :D

Emre's been doing his own thing anyway and has put some solo stuff out during their hiatus. I don't know about the other one.

None of this particularly fills me with hope though, if that first single and campaign is anything to go by.

They waited too long and came back with something a bit crap. Amazing how many UK acts suffer this sophomore slump and never learn from it.

I quite like If You’re Over Me. It feels like it could be more of a hit than the last one.

I agree. It isn't exactly what I was expecting, and certainly not up there with the big songs from Communion but it is a better song than Sanctify.

They are (well Olly is) still going with the theme in the video:

So If You're Over Me seems to have turned things around for them. Up to #8 this week, easily besting the #25 peak of Sanctify.

I really like the title track from the new album.

This acoustic version appeared as an advert on YouTube the other day.

I usually don't mind their songs but fuck me, his live vocals are genuinely unbearable, both completely affected yet ear-splittingly loud. I finally understand the plight of Guantanamo Bay torture victims forced to listen to deafening vocal runs.

I saw them live few years ago and his vocals were nowhere near this shower of cat shit.

I think he has always tended to be one who tried to do too much, but it seems to have got worse not better.

However, I'm pleased If You're Over Me has been a slow burning hit and I do like Palo Santo too.

He's got a touch of the Jessie Js about him, but without the vocal talent underneath the innumerable unlistenable affectations.

I think probably my biggest problem with them at the moment is that King feels like such an anomaly already.

It already WAS in terms of the last album generally speaking, but I still judge every new song by that benchmark and I’m consistently disappointed, even if there’s been no real dip in quality from the other singles they released.

LONG GONE are the days when they spat out notorious bangers King, Take Shelter and Desire.

This one also falls under the category of very good for me:

If You're Over Me is up again to number six this week. It will be interesting to see how the album goes.

I saw the singer being interviewed recently. It was first time I'd seen him interviewed. He was relentlessly annoying.

All For You initially sounds like the best thing they’ve done since Shine.

    Relentlessly annoying. :D

There is an interview with him in Q this month which mentions that issues unsurprisingly arose with the other two when he went off to write with other songwriters. The label didn't think there were singles at one point and tried to push him towards doing dance features.

I don’t think there’s anything that matches them but Hallelujah, Karma and Up In Flames are all worth a listen.

I saw this - are they an actual group because there was only the usual goon grinning out from Fopp's shelves?
