Gaga's only non-electro pop single - do you like it?

I love it.

You know, when she's good she's actually very good it's a shame that's not very often

Boring and overlong. It's a Shania Ballad dressed up as Bruce Springsteen.

Another terrible video too.

Actually a 3 is harsh. It's probably a 5.

HATE the country twang. :manson:

Vocally it's one of her strongest efforts but the song itself isn't anything special. She was performing this ATLEAST a year before BTW was even released so by the time I heard the album version I was bored of it.

Probably her worst video, yes. The whole dressing up as a guy was just cringeworthy on many levels.

*THAT* VMA peformance where she was dressed as a guy is also probably the biggest CUNT moment of her career so far. I think it was at that stage I actually thought 'you really are a fucking cunt.'

It makes for a nice change of pace for her, especially fits a treat on the radio, but I just find her piano ballads to be generally overbearing and joyless.

It WAS an important single, though. I do believe that, even if it was a relative flop outside the States.

Listening back, no. I was right with 3.

That last minute with the guitar solo and her horrible ad-libs and over-singing. FUCK OFF. :manson:

It's the worst of her non-electro pop songs, so it's a shame that she chose this passable country pastiche to showcase her talents rather than something incredible like Speechless.

Gaga piano ballads rank:

1. "You & I"
2. "Brown Eyes"
3. "Speechless"

EURGH

One of my worst memories ever is being on the treadmill (hoping for a great upbeat Gaga track to lift my energy) and "Speechless" comes on. And I couldn't change it :bad:

Speechless IS great and far superior to You & I. It took a while to get under my skin but I ended up loving it almost as much as everything else on TFM.

Nowhere near as good as Speechless, which is really the HEIGHT of Gaga Elton balladry, and it does feel like it's giving its all to be a classic stadium rock ballad but never quite reaching there.

It grew on me and the lyrics kind of started resonating after a while, but it's still not one of my favourites. 7.

It's a beautiful song. I love it. I completely relate to the lyrics. And the video is wonderful - the best of a campaign of great and underrated videos.

It does sound like a Shania song.

I like it aside from the last minute.

There's a decent song in there somewhere, but for me it's totally ruined by her vocal. In fact that rings true for pretty much every ballad she's done thus far, though stuff like Brown Eyes is just plain shit anyway.

It's a good song, 8/10. I just LOVE the Metronomy remix though, makes it a 10/10.

I've loved it since she first performed it, it's an urgent and emotional vocal and it works an absolute treat live. I could listen to the instrumental alone and still feel goosebumps during the guitar solo; what it lacks in subtlety, it makes up for in bombast as a pop song.

It also has my favourite remixes from the era, apart from the Metronomy one that's already been posted these are both 10/10 moments;

And I also agree with Lou about the video, there is some wonderful imagery; the light shining in the barn and the nymph in the crop circle with Jo especially. I also loved the fashion films she did for each character.

NOTHING in the world feels better than shouting out the last minute and a half of this song while being irreparably drunk

LOVE it!!!!
In my opinion her best single after Bad Romance.
And the fact the actor playing her bf in the video turned into a real love story adds to the sheer BEAUTY of this song.

I LOVE this song. Love the belting ad-libs; the aforementioned last minute & a half. Video-wise I love the mermaid, love the frolicking in the cornfields. I even like Jo Calderone (in the video, not so much when she stays in character for public appearances).

One of my fave Gags songs!

The fact that she hooked up with him when she got back together with Luc Carl who the song is about makes it all the more ROMANTIC. :eyes:

I'm not saying it's YOUR source, it's just that he's more than often the origin of such rumours.

She'll be safe, she never had anything to do with him.
Gagz biggest mistake was taking this piece of utter trash on her ride in the first place.

Who can blame her for that upgrade, but I thought they had split by the time the music video was filmed? She did a pretty passive-aggressive tweet about having to learn to love yourself and not letting another person change you a couple of days before.

It was a pretty brief reunion anyway, and judging from what we know about Luc I couldn't say I feel particularly bad for the guy. Gaga did care about him deeply though, practically all of her songs were written in one way or another about their relationship and Born This Way (album) was dedicated to him.

This admittedly very long article about Gaga's early years on the LES up until the release of Just Dance (which is an extract from a book written by Gaga's friend at the time) will be able to tell you more succinctly than I could.

Not the greatest song in the world, but it does prove she knows how to write a riff and melody and how catchy and effective it is when not smothered in synths and overproduction.

I REALLY hope she strips it back for album 3, just to see if she really COULD be one of the best. Still not convinced yet.

I FAR FAR prefer Speechless as well by the way. That Royal Variety performance trumps every single one I've seen of You And I.

I adore Speechless too (and I don't care who knows it!) and I never tire of this contemporary dance routine set to the song:

Dreadful, churning, contrived NONSENSE
I'm listening to it now and it's just so overblown. The song is fine but it's drowning in how clever it thinks it is.

Meatloaf she is not.
